Opis:
The decrease in application of organic fertilizers into arable soils in Slovakia observed for the past twenty-five years has caused degradation of their physical, chemical and biological parameters. In order to solve this problem, Slovak farmers often add to soil such carbon-rich substances which either pose a risk of increasing the heavy metal content of soil, or whose purchase and use are economically demanding. Meanwhile, sawdust is a cheap and available carbon-rich material. Therefore, the objective of a two-year pot experiment was to determine the impact of sawdust used alone or with added inorganic nitrogen on the parameters of sugar beet yield as well as on some soil parameters. The results proved that the separate application of sawdust in autumn in doses of 3.4 t ha-1 and 6.8 t ha-1 caused the retardation of the growth of sugar beet and the decrease of the total chlorophyll content in leaves during the first 80 days of plant growth and development. This application did not have the significant impact on the root yield, but it increased the sugar content of sugar beet roots. The roots contained less a-amino nitrogen and more potassium. The number of nitrogen-fixing bacteria of genus Azotobacter chroococcum (AzCh) and the quantity of organic carbon in soil increased. The addition of mineral nitrogen fertilizer in a dose of 60 kg ha-1 into sawdust before sugar beet sowing in spring lowered or even eliminated the negative impact of sawdust itself on the beet growth and the content of total chlorophyll. It also increased the root yield. This addition had positive impact on the number of bacteria of the genus AzCh and the quantity of organic carbon in soil.

The aim of the study was to assess the diet composition of four carnivore species inhabiting the Gorce National Park (Western Carpathians, S Poland), i.e., grey wolf (Canis lupus), Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), red fox (Vulpes vulpes), and pine marten (Martes martes). The food analysis was based on scats collected between June 2016 and February 2017 along seven transects of a total length 96.13 km. Altogether 187 faeces were found, 95 of grey wolf, 20 of lynx, 49 of red fox, and 23 of pine marten, respectively. The dominant food category of wolf and lynx were ungulates, comprising respectively 98% and 95% of the consumed biomass. The trophic niche overlap between wolf and lynx was very high (Pianka’s index Ojk=0.99). However, there were differences in the consumed prey species. Wolves fed on red deer (Cervus elaphus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and wild boar (Sus scrofa), while lynxes foraged equally on two ungulates, red deer and roe deer. Medium−sized carnivores showed greater variety in consumed food. Both pine marten and red fox had higher values of Levins’ index of the trophic niche breadth than larger carnivores and highly overlapped their diets (Ojk=0.96). Pine marten and red fox consumed mostly small mammals. Additionally, martens consumed frequently fruits, whereas red foxes foraged on carrion of ungulates. This might explain the fact that wolf and lynx overlapped their trophic niches more with red fox than with the pine marten.

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of biostimulants on the content of selected microelements in the skin and flesh of potato tubers. Five potato cultivars were grown: Irga, Satina (with cream- and yellow-colored flesh), Valfi, Blaue St. Galler (with purple-colored flesh) and Highland Burgundy Red - HB Red (with red-colored flesh). Potatoes were treated with the following biostimulants: Asahi SL, Bio-Algeen S 90, Kelpak SL and Trifender WP. Control plants were not treated with biostimulants. Samples of potato tubers were analyzed immediately after the harvest and after 5 months of storage (4°C). The highest content of micronutrients in the skin and flesh of potato tubers was determined at harvest in the driest 2015 year. In all years of the experiment, micronutrient concentrations were lower in the flesh than in the skin of potato tubers, and the greatest differences were noted in the content of Fe. The concentrations of Zn, Mn and Fe in the skin and flesh of potato tubers increased as a response to the BioAlgeen S 90 biostimulant, and the content of Fe was also higher in the skin of potatoes treated with Kelpak SL. In general, the skin and flesh of potatoes cvs. Valfi, Blaue St. Galler and HB Red were more abundant in microelements than cvs. Irga and Satina potatoes. Content of Zn and Mn increased and the content of Cu and Fe decreased (excluding the first year of the study) in the skin and flesh of stored potatoes. The skin and flesh of stored potato tubers treated with biostimulants were characterized by Mn concentrations that were higher or similar to those recorded in the control treatment (excluding the skin of potatoes treated with Bio-Algeen S 90) and a smaller decrease in Cu content.

Opis:
The aim of this research has been to analyse the effect of a cultivation system on the content of minerals in carrot roots. Roots of two carrot cultivars (Koral and Bolero) grown in organic plantations and plantations maintained according to integrated agriculture guidelines were chosen for the study. The thermal and moisture conditions differentiated the content of macro- and microelements more than the cultivation system or genotype specific traits of the cultivars did. In general, a significantly higher content of the analysed minerals was observed in the first year of the experiment. Carrot grown in the integrated system contained higher amounts of N and Mg as well as Cu, Zn and Mn, while organic carrot roots had more P, Fe and Pb. The late cv. Koral contained significantly more P as well as Mg and Cu, Zn and Pb, while the cultivar Bolero was richer in N. With respect to the other elements, no differences were determined between the cultivars. After storage, the content of N in roots of both cultivars decreased, while the levels of the other macronutrients was higher. Larger changes in the content of N, Na, Mg and Ca were detected in roots of the carrot from organic plantations, while P and K differed more in carrot roots from the integrated system.

Opis:
A pot experiment was carried out in a greenhouse to determine the optimal percentage of exchangeable Ca, Mg, and K in the CEC for improving the yield and favourable mineral composition of annual ryegrass plants. The experiment comprised 13 fertilization treatments with various basic cation saturation ratios in soil. Correlation and regression analyses revealed that the K content of ryegrass was influenced mainly by the percentage of K in the soil’s exchange complex, but was far less affected by the percentage of saturation with Ca and Mg. Higher saturation of the CEC with Mg and Ca had a negligent effect on limiting the “luxury” uptake of K by grasses. The Mg content of plants grown for green forage was significantly more influenced by the Mg : K ratio in soil than by saturation levels of Mg, which suggests that K has a strong antagonistic effect on the Mg uptake. An increase in the percentage of saturation with Ca led to a progressive increase in the Ca content of ryegrass. An increase in the percentage of saturation with Mg or K had the opposite effect. The K : (Ca+Mg) ratio in ryegrass was most highly correlated with the percentage of the CEC occupied by K. When the percentage of the CEC occupied by K exceeded 5%, the K : (Ca+Mg) ratio of the first cut was higher than 2.0, which points to undesirable proportions of those cations in ryegrass forage. To maximize the yield of annual ryegrass with optimal mineral composition, the soil exchange complex should be occupied by 50-60% Ca, 8-12% Mg and 4-5% K, and the Mg : K ratio in soil should be maintained at 2-3 : 1.

Opis:
This paper reviews the available literature about the botanical aspects and productivity, properties and applications of fenugreek. The source of this species are seeds and leaves. The high yield of fenugreek is influenced on the environmental and agricultural factors. The unique properties of this species are determined by variety, agricultural technology and habitat conditions, too. One of this species is a crop fenugreek (Trigonella foenum – graecum L.). Fenugreek belongs to the legume plants and is an environmentally friendly plant. The yields of plants depend on the genotype, climate, environmental conditions, cultivation practices, use of fertilizers, irrigation. The seeds are rich in biogenic element such as phosphorus, sulfur, magnesium, calcium but were less abundant in zinc, manganese and copper. Fenugreek seeds and leaves contain biologically active substances (protein, amino acids, biogenic elements, lipids and fatty acids), and they are used in traditional medicine, as functional food and in the cosmetics industry. In traditional medicine, fenugreek is used to prepare infusions, water and alcohol extracts, tinctures, meads, tonics with antidepressant and psychotonic properties, and muscle growth supplements. Fenugreek constitutes high-quality feed for dairy cattle which improves the health status of livestock. The findings presented in this review paper will be useful for consumers hoping to improve their health by incorporating healthy biogenic elements and fatty acids into their diets.

The aim of this study has been to determine the effect of cultivation and plant protection on the content of macro- and micronutrients and yield of roots in edible carrots. The cultivation of carrot according to the principles of integrated farming resulted in a higher root mass as well as a higher total and commercial yield than in the ecological cultivation system. The plant protection had a positive effect on the root mass only in ecological cultivation. The content of crude ash in carrot roots ranged from 71.25 to 80.10 g kg-1 d.m. Roots of carrots from the integrated system contained more N-total and potassium than the ones from the ecological system. In general, carrots originating from the integrated system contained more Zn and Mn, while those grown ecologically had more Cu and Ni. After storage, the content of N-total, K, Na, Ca and Mg in carrot roots increased. Meanwhile, the P concentration tended to decrease. The plant protection methods have significant effect on the content of N-total and K and microelements. The content of nitrates (V) was modified more extensively in roots of carrots grown in the integrated system than in ecological system.

The aim of this study has been to determine the influence of sewage sludge on the content of selected trace elements in Virginia mallow and in the soil after harvesting these plants. Sewage sludge was the source of nitrogen and phosphorus for the plants, while potassium was supplied in the form of mineral fertilisers. Virginia mallow plants grown without fertilisation served as the contnrol. The form and dose of sewage sludge did not have any larger effect on the concentrations of copper and zinc in the plants. The content of manganese and chromium increased as the the dose of either form of sewage sludge increased. In turn, the content of nickel in Virginia mallow tended to decrease as the doses of sludge rose. The biomass of Virginia mallow contained significantly more cadmium when fertilised with sewage sludge. Significantly more Mn and Pb accumulated in the soil which had been enriched with wet sewage sludge, while the soil treated with pelleted sewage sludge contained more Cd. The soil content of Zn, Mn, Pb and Cr tended to increase as the dose of sewage sludge increased. With respect to nickel and cadmium, their soil content was significantly differentiated by the applied doses of sewage sludge but the direction of these modifications was inconsistent. The forms or doses of sewage sludge applied left the content of copper in soil unaffected. Concerning the accumulation in the aerial parts of Virginia mallow plants, the heavy metals can be ordered as follows: Cd < Cu < Cr < Ni < Zn < Mn. Generally, sewage sludge applied in doses that covered the demand of Virginia mallow for nitrogen and phosphorus did not cause excessive increase in the content of heavy metals in the crop’s aerial biomass. However, an increase in the dose of sewage sludge tended to raise the content of mobile forms of heavy metals in soil after harvest of Virginia mallow.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a harvest time on the chemical composition and dry matter degradability of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) depending on a swath and cultivar (Bajka - diploid; Baronka - tetraploid). The herbage was harvested at four times of the day (6:00, 10:00, 14:00, 18:00) – the first swath on 15th May 2012, and next after 4, 5 and 6 weeks. Chemical composition and dry matter degradability after 48 hours of in vitro incubation were determined. All the analyzed treatments had an impact on the content of DM, crude protein and soluble and structural fractions of carbohydrates. The diploid cultivar had a greater content of DM, WSC and aNDF (P<0.01) and a lesser content of crude protein and ADF (P<0.01) compared with the tetraploid cultivar. Dry matter of the first swath herbage was characterized by the greatest content of WSC and the least content of aNDF (P<0.01). In each consecutive swath, the WSC content significantly decreased (P<0.01) while aNDF increased (P<0.01). The increase in DM content between 14:00 and 18:00 was due to the deposition of products of photosynthesis, which is confirmed by a parallel increase in the concentration of WSC. The effect of treatments on the degradability of DM in vitro has not been confirmed, but the results indicate a smaller impact of a cultivar than the harvest management. Numerous interactions between the analyzed treatments indicate the need to choose the harvest time depending on a genotype and swath. Ruminal degradability indicates that high value ryegrass can be obtained regardless of the harvest time during the day. However, greater suitability for ensiling was shown by the diploid cultivar harvested at 10:00 and the tetraploid harvested at 18:00.

Opis:
The objective of the following three-year small-plot experiments was to determine the impact of a dose and application date of the biostimulator Mg-Tytanit (MgTi) on the formation of winter oilseed rape phytomass and its titanium cont ent. In the trial the biostimulant Mg-Tytanit containing 8.5 g of titanium in 1 liter was used. The experiment consisted of 5 treatments: 0 – control treatment without MgTi; 2xTi0.2 – two applications of MgTi in the dose of 0.2 dm3 ha-1; 3xTi0.2 – three applications of MgTi in the dose of 0.2 dm3 ha-1; 2xTi0.4 – two applications of MgTi in the dose of 0.4 dm3 ha-1; 3xTi0.4 – three applications of MgTi in the dose of 0.4 dm3 ha-1. The BS was applied in spring during two or three different growth stages: BBCH 50, BBCH 59, BBCH 66. The first plant sampling was carried out shortly before the first application of BS (BBCH 50). The second, third and fourth sampling were taken 2 – 3 weeks after the application of Mg-Tytanit (BBCH 59, BBCH 66, BBCH 71). The results showed that the biostimulator MgTi, regardless of its dose and application date, resulted in a higher weight of the aerial and underground phytomass. All the MgTi applications had impact on the winter oilseed rape yield increase. The seed yield was increased by 0.3 to 0.63 t ha-1. Higher yields were achieved in the treatments where MgTi was applied three times in comparison with the treatments, where it was used twice. The oil content in rape seeds was increased significantly only if MgTi was used in the total doses 0.8 and 1.2 dm3 ha-1 in the single application dose 0.4 dm3 ha-1. The oil content value was increased by 0.94 % and by 0.82 %. The oil production per hectare was increased after each use of MgTi, i.e. regardeless of the dose and date of its application. The highest Ti content in the aerial phytomass was 68.5 mg kg-1 and in the underground phytomass it was 247.1 mg kg-1.
