Phoenician identity is associated with a strong sense of belonging to the city-state; in the case of Cyprus, it is especially Kition, where the “Phoenician” ruling dynasty can be recognised. Another distinctive feature is the Phoenician language and alphabetic writing, with numerous examples of inscriptions found on the island. The third one is religion and cult, with deities bearing Phoenician names, but apparently syncretised with both their Hellenic counterparts and local traditions. For about a century after the death of the last king of Kition the community, which we identify as Cypriot Phoenicians can still be found within the archaeological material, and especially through inscriptions. However, as generations pass, and a new order grows without the ‘Phoenician city-state’ in Cyprus and the cult overseen by it, only some old family traditions are carried on, such as personal names, and regard towards ancestors.
Tożsamość fenicka wiąże się z silnym poczuciem przynależności do miasta-państwa, w przypadku Cypru jest to zwłaszcza Kition, gdzie można rozpoznać „fenicką” dynastię panującą. Innym wyróżnikiem jest język fenicki i pismo alfabetyczne, z licznymi przykładami inskrypcji znalezionych na wyspie. Trzecim jest religia i kult, z bóstwami noszącymi imiona fenickie, ale wyraźnie zsynkretyzowanymi zarówno z ich helleńskimi odpowiednikami, jak i lokalnymi tradycjami. Przez około sto lat po śmierci ostatniego króla Kitionu ślady społeczności, którą identyfikuje się jako Cypryjscy Fenicjanie, wciąż można odnaleźć w materiale archeologicznym, a zwłaszcza w inskrypcjach. Jednak wraz z upływem pokoleń pozbawionych opieki „fenickiego państwa-miasta” na Cyprze i nadzorowanego przez nie kultu zachowane pozostaną tylko niektóre stare tradycje rodzinne, takie jak imiona i szacunek dla przodków.

Afrodyta, grecka bogini miłości i piękna, już wg. autorów starożytnych wywodzić się miała z Cypru, gdzie znajdowała się jej najstarsza znana świątynia w Palaepaphos. Domniemany proces przekształcenia lokalnego bóstwa cypryjskiego w helleńską Afrodytę jest jednak trudny do prześledzenia. Nie podważając jej cypryjskich korzeni, niniejszy artykuł koncentruje się na kwestii genezy jej obecności w greckim panteonie bóstw, dowodząc, iż Afrodyta była od początku bóstwem sensu stricto greckim (greko-cypryjskim), a nie lewantyńskim, którego kult  jedynie wtórnie uległ wpływom kultu Astarte, nim ostatecznie bogini ta stała się częścią panteonu bóstw czczonych przez Greków.
Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, according to ancient authors, was supposed to have come from Cyprus, where her oldest known temple was located in Palaepaphos. However, the alleged process of transforming the local Cypriot deity into the Hellenic Aphrodite is difficult to trace. Without questioning her Cypriot roots, this article focuses on the issue of the origins of her presence in the Greek pantheon of deities, proving that Aphrodite was from the beginning a strictly Greek (Greek-Cypriot) and not a Levantine deity, whose worship was only secondarily influenced by the cult of Astarte, before she eventually became part of the pantheon of deities revered by the Greeks.

Photogrammetry has been a part of the curriculum of archaeologists since the early days of photography. This method of obtaining reliable information from non-contact imaging for the purpose of recording, measuring, analyzing and representation of archaeological artefacts is, due to recent advances in imaging techniques and computer technology, going through a renaissance. The history of the method in general terms is discussed in this paper. The authors present new perspectives on current areas of research, including workflows, the use of different hardware and software, and “guerrilla photogrammetry”. Furthermore, the authors propose future directions for the development of the field, like using Smartphones, immersive images, truly virtual museums, and public engagement.

Ananda Devi is a francophone-Mauritian writer who lives (and creates) near Geneva. She is the author of numerous novels, short stories and volumes of poetry. Although the stories of her characters are fictitious, Devi’s texts are strongly inspired by her native island, its history and its ethnic, cultural and linguistic heterogeneity. In her novels, Devi employs numerous stylistic devices to empower individuals who are regarded as worse, excluded from the society due to their deficits.

Mauritius is a small island in the Indian Ocean, whose population approximates to that of Warsaw. Since its discovery, the island was ruled by several governments: Dutch, French, and English, before it finally became independent in 1968. On this piece of land of about 2,000 m2 live direct descendants of the inhabitants of three continents: Europe, Africa and Asia. The history of the island and the Mauritian people create its specificity. Undoubtedly, the fact that Mauritius is an island largely influences the Mauritian society. In my article, I will study how this impacts on the society, including its writers. I will seek to define the nature of their relationships. I will try to describe the various representations of the island in Franco‑Mauritian literary fiction at the turn of the twentieth and twenty‑first centuries. Since this topos is in dichotomy of good and evil, I will consider the island as a synonym of a half‑paradise and a half‑prison. Subsequently, I will analyse it as a character of its own. Finally, I will argue that Mauritius can be seen as a reflection of the world, a miniature model. In summary, afterexamining the various images of Mauritius, I will try to demonstrate its special status in the Mauritian society, especially in literature. Two aspects of interfacial phenomena were discussed in the manuscript. The first one concerns the adsorptive removal of two azo dyes such as C.I. Acid Yellow 219 (AY219) and C.I. Direct Yellow 142 (DY142) as well as the phtalocyanine C.I. Reactive Blue 21 (RB21) on the alumina silicatitania oxide (4% wt. $Al_2O_3$ – 8% wt. $SiO_2$ – 88% wt. $TiO_2$; AST88) in the ionic surfactants presence. The second one deals with the determination of interaction mechanism in the dyes-AST88, dyes-surfactant-AST88 systems using the data obtained from the surface charge density and zeta potential studies. The sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) with anionic character and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with cationic ones were used. The adsorption capacities of 205.2 mg/g for AY219, 36.5 mg/g for RB21 and 18 mg/g for DY142. The potentiometric titration and Doppler laser electrophoresis methods enable determination of sign and magnitude of charge located in both the surface and the slipping plane layers around the solid particles. The structure of electrical double layer was determined in the AST88 systems without as well as with dyes and with mixed dye + surfactant adsorbates.

The main objective of the paper is a preliminary analysis of the dynamic interaction between the language-emotional-communicative processes which occur in language classrooms and both the natural conditions as well as student-/teacher-generated factors in classroom environments. In the article, a linguistic experiment conducted in three language classrooms with English as the students’ second language is described and an analysis of the research outcome is undertaken. The analysis of the research outcome serves a better understanding of the mechanisms which govern successful communication in English as the second language. Thus, the intention of analysing the experiment results might also be considered a voice in the discussion on homeostatic tendencies in a language classroom.

Ananda Devi’s family island, Mauritius, constitutes the background for her novels. Mauritius is a multiethnic society whose population is approximate to that of Warsaw, with four main religions and seventeen or eighteen languages (depending on a source), of which eight are used every day. However, this socio-cultural variety which we can find practically everywhere (in common life, beliefs as well as in literature), still remains taboo. The problem of social exclusion is one of the main threads in Devi’s novels. She describes people whose beliefs, convictions, behaviours and external appearance differ from what is commonly accepted by the society. She gives a voice to socially excluded individuals, giving them a chance to speak for themselves. The author concentrates on marginalization and rejection of women who are “different” due to appearance, deformation of the body, or bad karma. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przegląd zasad ingerencji w obszarze zabytkowym poprzez chronologiczne przedstawienie różnych koncepcji odbudowy Starego Miasta w Elblągu, jako teoretycznych podstaw odbudowy oraz ukazanie przemian w podejściu do projektowania nowej zabudowy w obszarze zabytkowym. Konsekwentna odbudowa Starego Miasta w Elblągu od prawie czterech dekad jest ugruntowana teoretycznie i dostosowana do współczesności. Poprzez przykłady i określenie faz odbudowy Starego Miasta w Elblągu, chciałabym poddać refleksji, czy retrowersja jest procesem dostosowującym się każdorazowo do nowych współczesnych potrzeb, czy raczej retrowersja jako autorska metoda zakończyła się w 2002 roku wraz z zaprzestaniem nadzorowania projektów przez jej autorkę i od dziewiętnastu lat obserwujemy po prostu proces budowy Nowego Starego Miasta.
The purpose of this article is to review the principles of intervention in a historic area through a chronological presentation of the various concepts of reconstruction of the Old Town in Elbląg, as theoretical foundations for reconstruction, and to show changes in the approach to designing new buildings in a historic area. The consistent reconstruction of Elblag's Old Town for nearly four decades has been theoretically grounded and adapted to the present day. By means of examples and defining phases of the reconstruction of the Old Town in Elblag, I would like to reflect on whether retroversion is a process that adapts itself each time to new contemporary needs, or rather retroversion as an authorial method ended in 2002 when the author stopped supervising projects and for nineteen years we have been simply observing the process of building the New Old Town.
