Opis:
The defect build-up, structure recovery and lattice location of transition metals in ion bombarded and thermally annealed ZnO and GaN single crystals were studied by channeled Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and channeled particle-induced X-ray emission measurements using 1.57 MeV ⁴He ions. Ion implantation to a fluence of 1.2×10¹⁶ ions/cm² was performed using 120 keV Co and 120 keV Mn ions. Thermal annealing was performed at 800°C in argon flow. Damage distributions were determined using the Monte Carlo McChasy simulation code. The simulations of channeled Rutherford backscattering spectra reveal that the ion implantation leads to formation of two types of defect structures in ZnO and GaN such as point and extended defects, such as dislocations. The concentrations of both types of defects are at a comparable level in both structures and for both implanted ions. Differences between both implantations appear after thermal annealing where the Mn-doped ZnO reveals much better transition metals substitution and recovery effect.

Opis:
In this study we analyzed daily pollen concentrations of Alnus spp. and Betula spp. from Worcester, UK and Wrocław, Poland. We analyzed seasonality, annual pollen index and footprint areas for the observed pollen concentrations by using the trajectory model hybrid single particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory (HYSPLIT). We examined 10 years of data during the period 2005–2014 and found substantial differences in the seasonality, pollen indices and footprint areas. For both genera, concentrations in Wrocław are in general much higher, the seasons are shorter and therefore more intense than in Worcester. The reasons appear to be related to the differences in overall climate between the two sites and more abundant sources in Poland than in England. The footprint areas suggest that the source of the pollen grains are mainly local trees but appear to be augmented by remote sources, in particular for Betula spp. but only to a small degree for Alnus spp. For Betula spp., both sites appear to get contributions from areas in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, while known Betula spp. rich regions in Russia, Belarus and Scandinavia had a very limited impact on the pollen concentrations in Worcester and Wrocław. Substantial and systematic variations in pollen indices are seen for Betula spp. in Wrocław with high values every second year while a similar pattern is not observed for Worcester. This pattern was not reproduced for Alnus spp.
Praca dotyczy dobowych stężeń pyłku olszy (Alnus spp.) oraz brzozy (Betula spp.) notowanych w Worcester (Wielka Brytania) oraz we Wrocławiu (Polska). Przeanalizowano sezonowość, indeks pyłkowy oraz obszary źródłowe pyłku przy zastosowaniu modelu HYSPLIT (hybrid single particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory model). W badaniu uwzględniono dane pomiarowe z okres 10 lat (2005–2014). Wynika to najprawdopodobniej z różnic w warunkach klimatycznych pomiędzy dwoma stacjami i z większej liczby lokalnych źródeł pyłku w Polsce niż w Anglii.

The dynamic bone remodeling process is a computationally challenging research area that struggles to understand the actual mechanisms. It has been observed that a mechanical stimulus in the bone greatly affects the remodeling process. A 3D finite element model of a femur is created and a probabilistic analysis is performed on the model. The probabilistic analysis measures the sensitivities of various parameters related to the material properties, geometric properties, and the three load cases defined as Single Leg Stance, Abduction, and Adduction. The sensitivity of each parameter is based on the calculated maximum mechanical stimulus and analyzed at various values of probabilities ranging from 0.001 to 0.999. The analysis showed that the parameters associated with the Single Leg Stance load case had the highest sensitivity with a probability of 0.99 and the angle of the force applied to the joint of the proximal femur had the overall highest sensitivity.

Opis:
Almost entire fleet of steam turbines in Poland was designed between 1950_1980 with the use of the so-called zero-dimensional (0D) calculation tools. For several years, design and modernization of the turbines occur in assistance with the state-of-the-art methods that describe working fluid flow field based on three-dimensional (3D) models and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes. This cooperation between 0D and 3D codes requires exchange of overall, integral information such as: power, efficiency, heat and mass fluxes. In consequence the question arises regarding the cohesion of definitions, and particularly regarding the correctness of the definition for internal efficiency of the turbine's stage and the turbine as a whole. In the present paper we formulate basic definitions reason of efficiency that are naturally adapted to the numerical 0D and 3D models. We show that the main reason of differences between the definitions in 0D and 3D is the definition of the theoretical work of the stage lt. In the classical 0D models, mostly employed is the isentropic approach, and hence the isentropic efficiency occurs. Meanwhile, in the increasingly common 3D approach (most likely by CFD), we use more physically correct pathway by subtracting energy loss from the available energy, that leads to the polytropic definition of efficiency. We show an example of computing the efficiency and the 3D losses, denoted with additional subscript CFD, we also discuss benefits of this definition in comparison with the isentropic classical definition in 0D.

Si-Mn alloy with a Mn content of a few percent is potentially a candidate for room temperature (RT) dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS). However, the present methods of material manufacture suffer from problems with poor Mn solubility and thermodynamical limitations. We study a non-equilibrium method in which silicon is first implanted with 160 keV manganese ions to a dose of 1 × 1016 ions/cm2 and next either irradiated with 1.5 MeV 4He+ ions from the Warsaw Van de Graaff accelerator at 400°C or treated with high-energy hydrogen plasma pulses. Conclusion from Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) examination of the samples is that both approaches lead to recovery of crystalline surface layer with manganese occupying off-substitutional sites. The potential development of the method is discussed.

High-pressure energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction study were performed on zircon-type phase of terbium orthovanadate, $TbVO_{4}$, in the pressure range up to 7 GPa. For analysis of the collected diffraction spectra, Le Bail refinements were performed. The values of bulk modulus and its pressure derivative ($B_0$ = 121 GPa, B' = 4.1) were obtained from fitting of the second-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state. The equation of state derived for $TbVO_{4}$, is compared with earlier data based on the Raman spectroscopic studies and with data of several other rare-earth orthovanadates.

Giardia duodenalis (syn. G. intestinalis, G. lamblia) is a cosmopolitan flagellate organism belonging to the most common intestinal protozoan parasites of humans and animals. Great genetic heterogeneity has been found within G. duodenalis, where only genotypes representing assemblages A and B have zoonotic potential. Fecal samples (447 specimens) obtained from 232 humans in West-central region of Poland were examined by microscopy and PCR. The total prevalence of Giardia in humans was 1.3%. DNA was extracted from three positive fecal samples and PCR products were obtained after amplification using the β-giardin primers G7 and G759. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses showed that G. duodenalis isolates from humans belonged to A and B genotypes. Moreover, three subgenotypes, including a cosmopolitan subgenotype A2 and two new subgenotypes A and B were detected.

There are many methods for detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts. Most of them (more than 20) enable the microscopic detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts in faecal smears. Such a great variability of diagnostic methods may lead to confusion as far as the choice of an appropriate technique by a given laboratory is concerned. This study evaluated the diagnostic usefulness of Cryptosporidium oocysts and coproantigen detection methods in the diagnosis of cryptosporidiosis in human (266 stool specimen) and animals (205 from cattle, 160 from sheep, 30 from horses, 80 from cats, 227 from dogs and 11 from wild animals). The total number of human and animal stool specimens processed was 266 and 713, respectively. In this study the usefulness of several diagnostic methods was compared. The following techniques were taken into account: wet mounts, hematoxylin staining, four different specific methods (modified Zeihl-Neelsen, Kinyoun's, safraninmethylene blue, as well as carbol-methyl violet and tartrazyne) and commercially available kit based on enzyme-linked immunoassay (ProspecT(r) Cryptosporidium Microplate Assay). The final number of positive specimens was 123. Out of them 77 were positive in all specific methods. The oocysts found in stool specimens were measured. Humans were infected with C. parvum and animals with C. parvum, C. andersoni or C. felis. The statistical analysis has shown that EIA test was a better than microscopy method for identification of Cryptosporidium in faecal samples in human and wild animal. Sensitivity and specificity are important factors for the choice of a proper diagnostic method for Cryptosporidium detection, however other factors such as cost, simplicity and ease of interpretation of results are also important considerations.

Cryptosporidium parvum is a coccidian parasite that affects millions of people worldwide. Clinical outcome of human cryptosporidiosis differs between immunocompetent and immunodeficient individuals. C. parvum is responsible for causing protracted and life-threatening diarrhea, biliary, and pulmonary infections in immunocompromised persons, especially in patients with AIDS. Though no effective treatment has been found so far, early diagnosis may be useful in controlling the infection. Thirty-eight stool specimens obtained from 35 HIV-positive patients admitted to the Clinic of Infectious Diseases in Poznań, Poland, were examined for the detection of oocysts, coproantigen and DNA of Cryptosporidium using standard microscopic, immunologic and molecular diagnostic methods. The presence of Cryptosporidium was detected in 10 HIV-positive patients. Oocysts, coproantigen and DNA of this parasite were identified solely in one specimen while Cryptosporidium DNA was detected in 8 specimens. Cryptosporidium coproantigen was found only in one sample. Although, the PCR was the most useful technique in the detection of Cryptosporidium in HIV-positive patients it should be noted that PCR has many pitfalls and needs to be carefully controlled to avoid both false positive and false negative results.
