Opis:
Research background: The twin pressures of economic downturn and climate change faced by countries around the world have become more pronounced over the past decade. A renewable energy transition is believed to play a central role in mitigating the economic-climate paradox. While the architectural and computational power of artificial intelligence is particularly well suited to address the challenges of massive data processing and demand forecasting during a renewable energy transition, there is very scant empirical assessment that takes a social science perspective and explores the effects of AI development on the energy transition. Purpose of the article: This paper aims to answer two key questions: One is, how does AI software development promote or inhibit the shift of energy consumption towards renewables? The other is, under what policy interventions does AI software development have a more positive effect on promoting renewable energy consumption? Methods: We employ a dataset of 62 economies covering the period 2011–2020 to analyze the impact of AI software development on the energy transition, where possible confounders, including political and economic characteristics and time-invariant elements, are controlled using fixed-effects estimation along with specified covariates. Findings & value added: AI software development can promote the energy transition towards renewables. There is suggestive evidence that the core mechanism linking such a positive relationship tends to lie in improving innovation performance in environmental monitoring rather than in green computing. Government support for R&D in renewable energy technologies is found to be significantly beneficial for harnessing the positive impact of AI software development on the energy transition. Compared to non-market-based environmental policies, market-based environmental policies have a more significant positive moderating effect on the relationship between AI software development and energy transition.

Opis:
This paper investigates the long-run relationships among environmental performance, political stability, and trade openness for 126 countries as well as the sub-samples of OECD and non-OECD countries, using the panel cointegration and panel-based error correction models for the period 2002-2014. For the full sample and the non-OECD countries, our results corroborate that there exists a long-term equilibrium cointegrated relationship among the variables. Moreover, the panel fully modified ordinary least square (FMOLS) estimations present that political stability and trade openness have a negative effect on environmental performance in full samples case as well as the non-OECD countries, whereas trade openness exhibits a positive influence on environmental performance in OECD countries. The vector error correction model (VECM) shows a diversified negative causalities running from trade openness and political stability to environmental performance in the long run for both full samples and the sub-samples countries. The policy implication is that pollution haven hypothesis (PHH) is supported and trade regulations can help promote environmental performance; meanwhile, political stability accelerates macroeconomic performance and attracts more foreign investment. Overall, the government can carry on a policy to lower pollution levels, thus further advancing environmental performance.

The dynamic evolution process of the coal gangue particles’ core retention phenomenon in the process of crushing under stress, the evolution law of grading and the corresponding microscopic mechanical characteristics after continuous particle crushing are analyzed. The meso-level which reveals deformation phenomena of granular materials under the action of external loads is highly complex. At the qualitative level, the static compaction process of coal gangue samples can be roughly divided into three stages: initial compaction stage, compaction and crushing stage, and crushing (compaction) stage. It is proved that the interaction of lateral confined unidirectional compression of granular materials is mainly compression.

Opis:
The impact of the noise radiated from merchant ships on marine life has become an active area of research. In this paper, a methodology integrating observation at a single location and modelling the whole noise field in shallow waters is presented. Specifically, underwater radiated noise data of opportunistic merchant ships in the waters of Zhoushan Archipelago were collected at least one day in each month from January 2015 to November 2016. The noise data were analyzed and a modified empirical spectral source level (SSL) model of merchant ships was proposed inspired by the RANDI-3 model (Research Ambient Noise Directionality) methodology. Then combining the modified model with the realistic geoacoustic parameters and AIS data of observed merchant ships, the noise mappings in this area were performed with N × 2D of Normal Mode calculations, in which the SSL of each ship was estimated using the modified model. The sound propagation at different receiving positions is different due to the shielding effect of islands and bottom topography. The methodology proposed in this paper may provide a reference for modelling shipping noise in shallow waters with islands and reefs.

Opis:
A hybrid watermarking algorithm with an optical watermark image based on singular value decomposition (SVD) ghost imaging is designed. Simultaneously, the blended watermarking algorithm is designed based on 4-level discrete wavelet transform (DWT), discrete cosine transform (DCT) and singular value decomposition (SVD). The 4-level diagonal sub-band image is obtained by performing 4-level two-dimensional wavelet transform on the original image, and the coefficient matrix is produced by applying the discrete cosine transform on the 4-level diagonal sub-band image. Then, three matrices are obtained by performing the singular value decomposition on the coefficient matrix. In addition, the optical watermark image is encrypted by an SVD ghost imaging system. The system could generate a secret key, and unauthorized users could not decrypt and reconstruct the original watermark image without this key. Later the encrypted watermark image is generated into the other three matrices by singular value decomposition. Afterwards, the encrypted watermark is embedded in the host image by mutual operation of different matrices in the algorithm. Simulation results validate the feasibility of the proposed hybrid watermarking scheme.

Opis:
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a switchable microwave photonic filter based on polarization dependence of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). The continuous optical wave from a tunable laser source is split into two branches. One branch serves as the SBS pump source and another branch serves as the signal source which are interactional to generate the SBS effect in the dispersion-shifted fiber. Only by adjusting the polarization direction of pump light and signal light, a frequency response switched between bandpass and notch filtering shape can be obtained.

Opis:
A novel scheme for photonic generation of broadly tunable radio frequency signal using a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) is demonstrated. A continuous wave emitted from the laser diode is modulated by a Mach–Zehnder modulator, then the modulated optical carrier is injected into the RSOA. Due to the four-wave mixing effect in the RSOA, the limited frequency components of the modulated signal are expanded, which directly lead to the generation of a wide frequency comb. Two optical tunable bandpass filters are parallelly connected to select the desired sidebands, which are launched into a photodetector or photomixer to generate radio frequency signal by beating. Using the proposed method, the bandwidth of generated radio frequency signal can range from 20 to 300 GHz.

A laser measurement system for measuring straightness and parallelism error using a semiconductor laser was proposed. The designing principle of the developed system was analyzed. Addressing at the question of the divergence angle of the semiconductor laser being quite large and the reduction of measurement accuracy caused by the diffraction effect of the light spot at the long working distance, the optical structure of the system was optimized through a series of simulations and experiments. A plano-convex lens was used to collimate the laser beam and concentrate the energy distribution of the diffraction effect. The working distance of the system was increased from 2.6 m to 4.6 m after the optical optimization, and the repeatability of the displacement measurement is kept within 2.2 m in the total measurement range. The performance of the developed system was verified by measuring the straightness of a machine tool through the comparison tests with two commercial multi-degree-of-freedom measurement systems. Two different measurement methods were used to verify the measurement accuracy. The comparison results show that during the straightness measurement of the machine tool, the laser head should be fixed in front of the moving axis, and the sensing part should move with the moving table of the machine tool. Results also show that the measurement error of the straightness measurement is less than 3 m compared with the commercial systems. The developed laser measurement system has the advantages of high precision, long working distance, low cost, and suitability for straightness and parallelism error measurement.
