Opis:
It has been discovered that the shallow water model based on approximate Riemann solvers can produce unrealistic flows in the case of uneven topography and inaccurate solutions of discharge near hydraulic jumps. To overcome these deficiencies, we proposed a new approach to implement the HLL Riemann solver for open channel flows, including: (1) adopting a form of Saint Venant equations which have only one source term representing driving forces; (2) defining discharge at interface and evaluating it according to the flux obtained by the HLL Riemann solver. In this paper, the performance of this new method is evaluated by means of dam-break flows over a channel with triangular cross-section and a natural river valley with complex topography, respectively. Comparisons of computed results with analytic solutions and data measured from the physical model show that the proposed method is capable of satisfactorily reproducing dam-break flows over complex topography.

Opis:
The impact of design flood in terms of water surface level and maximum velocity in a reach on the Nile River is studied, using a depth-averaged two-dimensional model. The reach includes a proposed site for a shipyard maintenance harbour. The CCHE2D model, a depth-averaged two-dimensional model, is selected to perform both the steady state computation, for calibration purposes, and flood routing through the reach to obtain maximum water surface level and velocity information. Manning's coefficient was obtained by matching the computed and measured water surface level in the reach under steady flow conditions. The computed results of velocity and water surface profiles agreed satisfactorily with the measured data. The verified model was then used to simulate a flood event within the same reach. Stage-discharge relationships for various sections within the reach were obtained. The peak water surface level at each section was compared with the flow stage under normal flow conditions. The peak stage was found to be well below the proposed elevation of the construction site. The estimation of the peak velocity and water surface level might be useful for bank protection work.

Opis:
A three-dimensional computational model, solving Reynolds equations with the ke turbulence closure, has been presented to simulate the flow field in an open channel near a side-discharge channel. The purpose of this study was to exam this model's applicability for simulating the three-dimensional recirculation velocity field in the vicinity of the side discharge channel. The numerical simulations show that both the height and length of the recirculation zone were correctly predicted when compared with laboratory measurements. The predicted trend of the shape of the recirculation zone under different flow conditions agrees with experimental data. It was confirmed that the SMART upwinding scheme performs better than QUICK and HYBRID schemes, since it induces less numerical diffusion and no oscillations. It was found in this study that the SMART scheme needs some minor modifications for complex flow computations.

Opis:
The full-length cDNA of LeTIR1 gene was isolated from tomato with EST-based in silico cloning followed by RACE amplification. LeTIR1 contained an open reading frame (ORF) 1872 bp long, encoding 624 amino acid residues. The predicted protein LeTIR1 had one F-box motif and eleven leucine-rich repeats (LRRs), all of which are highly conserved in TIR1 proteins of other plant species. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the LeTIR1 protein shared high similarity with other known TIR1 proteins. Both sequence and phylogenetic analysis suggested that LeTIR1 is a TIR1 homologue and encodes an F-box protein in tomato. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR indicated that LeTIR1 was expressed constitutively in all organs tested, with higher expression in stem than root, leaf, flower and fruit. Its expression level was positively correlated with the auxin distribution in stem or axillary shoot, and was induced by spraying exogenous IAA.

Opis:
A novel heterogeneous catalyst, Fe/Mn supported on NaY zeolite, was effectively applied for treating pulp mill effluents. The results of the wastewater quality analysis showed that aromatic structures were present in raw pulp mill effluents, which indicated the difficulty for biodegradation treatments. Two different catalysts were prepared by impregnation (Fe-Mn/NaYim) and sol-gel (Fe-Mn/NaYsg) methods, respectively. The Fe-Mn/NaYsg catalyst demonstrated higher COD removal efficiency and was more stable than the Fe-Mn/NaYim catalyst. The synergistic effects were found between Fe and Mn for COD removal. The highest COD removal efficiency (75.2%) was yielded with the Fe-Mn/NaYsg catalyst (Fe/Mn molar ratio of 2) with 4 mmol/dm3 of H2O2 and 1.2 g/dm3 of catalyst addition. A constant COD removal over time was obtained; the COD removal efficiency amounted to 45% after the Fe-Mn/NaYsg catalyst repeatedly degrading pulp mill effluents for five times. The distribution and transformation of the polarity and molecular weight (MW) of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the heterogeneous Fenton process were also studied. Experiments showed that the hydrophobic fraction comprised the largest fraction of DOC (60%) in raw wastewater and high MW molecules were transformed into low MW molecules after the heterogeneous Fenton process. This study broadened the application of the Fenton technology.

The steady state solutions of a nonlinear digital cellular neural network with ω neural units and a nonnegative variable parameter λ are sought. We show that λ = 1 is a critical value such that the qualitative behavior of our network changes. More specifically, when ω is odd, then for λ ∈ [0, 1), there is one positive and one negative steady state, and for λ ∈ [1, ∞), steady states cannot exist; while when ω is even, then for λ ∈ [0, 1), there is one positive and one negative steady state, and for λ = 1, there are no nontrivial steady states, and for λ ∈ (1, ∞), there are two fully oscillatory steady states. Furthermore, the number of existing nontrivial solutions cannot be improved. It is hoped that our results are of interest to digital neural network designers.

In this paper, we report on abundant fossils of Platybelodon from the Middle Miocene of the Linxia Basin, China. Most of the fossils were discovered at two localities (Laogou and Zengjia) in the upper Middle Miocene Hujialiang Formation, and possess derived characters for the genus, including a relatively slender upper incisor, the development of a transverse ledge on the narrowest part of the mandibular symphysis, narrow, elongate and hypsodont third molars, the development of fourth loph(id)s on the second molars, and the development of small enamel conules and cementum in the interloph(id)s. Following comparisons with other Eurasian platybelodonts, we assign these remains to Platybelodon grangeri, and demonstrate that they are morphologically intermediate between P. grangeri from the Tunggurian localities of Tarim Nor and Platybelodon Quarry in Inner Mongolia. We suggest that the locality of Laogou may be younger than that of Zengjia, based on the occurrence of platybelodonts showing a suite of more derived characters. In addition, we assign two further specimens of Platybelodon from the lower Middle Miocene Dongxiang Formation of the Linxia Basin to Platybelodon danovi, owing to their retention of plesiomorphic characters distinguishing them from other Linxia Platybelodon fossils. Based on a cladistic analysis, we propose an evolutionary sequence of platybelodonts in Eurasia, and discuss potential functional adaptations.

One of the most important advantage of ABM (Agent-Based Modeling) used in social and economic calculation simulation is that the critical behavioral characteristics of the micro agents can be deeply depicted by the approach. Why, what and how real behavior(s) should be incorporated into ABM and is it appropriate and effective to use ABM with HSCA collaboration and micro-macro link features for complex economy/finance analysis? Through deepening behavioral analysis and using computational experimental methods incorporating HS (Human Subject) into CA (Computational Agent), which is extended ABM, based on the theory of behavioral finance and complexity science as well, we constructed a micro-macro integrated model with the key behavioral characteristics of investors as an experimental platform to cognize the conduction mechanism of complex capital market and typical phenomena in this paper, and illustrated briefly applied cases including the internal relations between impulsive behavior and the fluctuation of stock’s, the asymmetric cognitive bias and volatility cluster, deflective peak and fat-tail of China stock market.

Opis:
The effect of electron beam irradiation on magnetic property of iron bearing minerals was investigated by susceptibility measurements. The results show that the magnetic susceptibility of iron bearing sulfide minerals can be enhanced remarkably by strong beam current irradiation, while the magnetic susceptibility of oxidized iron minerals keeps unchanged and even is slightly reduced. The magnetic susceptibility of arsenopyrite can reach the ferromagnetic level. The particle size of irradiated minerals makes notable effects on magnetic susceptibility. The magnetic susceptibility of irradiated minerals is enhanced greatly with reduction of particle size, and the irradiation dose corresponding to the maximum magnetic susceptibility is decreased simultaneously. Exposure of pyrite to small beam current electron irradiation can only enhance its magnetic susceptibility from 4 to 5-fold. Enhancement of magnetic property by radiation induced defects and excitation in minerals is limited. Strong beam current electron irradiation provides a novel approach to enlarge the magnetic property differences between iron bearing minerals.
