A carbon-based solid acid catalyst was prepared by the sulfonation of carbonized seed shells of Jatropha curcas (J. curcas L.). The structure of amorphous carbon consisting of polycyclic aromatic carbon sheets attached a high density of acidic SO3H groups (2.0 mmol · g−1) was identified with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The performance of the solid acid catalyst was evaluated for biodiesel production in the esterification of oleic acid with methanol. 95.7% yield of biodiesel was obtained after 2 h reaction and the conversions with reused catalyst varied in the range of 95.7% to 95.1%, showing better activity and stability than commercial catalyst amberlyst-46. It was also observed that the prepared catalyst showed enhanced activity in the transesterification of triolein with methanol when compared with other solid acid catalysts. A synergistic effect results from the high density of SO3H groups and the good access of reactants to the acidic sites can be used to explain the excellent catalytic activity, as well as the strong affinity between the hydrophilic reactants and the neutral OH groups bonded to the polycyclic aromatic carbon rings.

Opis:
e adaptability of plants to drought not only includes their ability to resist drought stress, but also their ability to recover aer stress is relieved. In this study, a weighting method was used to control the soil water content to produce a soil water stress gradient. e effects of drought and rewatering on the changes in osmotic adjustment substance content, antioxidant enzyme activity, and photosynthetic characteristics of potted Dicranostigma henanensis seedlings were measured on Day 28 aer the imposition of watering treatments and Day 7 aer rewatering. During the drought stress process, the relative electrical conductivity, thiobarbituric acid, water use efficiency, and proline content displayed a continuously increasing trend. Further, the net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate constantly decreased, while the chlorophyll content first increased and then decreased. Aer rehydration, superoxide dismutase (EC 1.15.1.1) activity and photosynthetic parameters quickly recovered to the CK level (soil moisture is 75%–80% of the maximum water holding capacity in the field), indicating that D. henanensis plants have a strong ability to repair the damage caused by drought stress. In particular, the photosynthetic machinery may have sophisticated regulation and repair mechanisms, which may be associated with its stable photosystem. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that the D. henanensis plant has a strong ability to adapt to arid environments, and therefore could be an excellent ornamental flower for landscaping in arid and semiarid areas.

In recent years, harmful cyanobacterial blooms frequently occurred all over the world, causing great damage to ecosystems, fishery resources, and recreational facilities. Therefore, the removal of harmful cyanobacterial blooms is a crucial step for the maintenance of safe water supplies and for the safety of aquatic products. Hydrogel beads based on sodium alginate and an aqueous extract from pomegranate peel were prepared, and used for removing Microcystin aeruginosa. The removal efficiencies of hydrogel beads to M. aeruginosa and the factors affecting its removal from solutions (the ratio of material to solvent, the dosage of hydrogel beads, and the density of M. aeruginosa cells) were investigated. The optimum ratio of material to solvent, the dosage of hydrogel beads and the density of M. aeruginosa cells were 0.03 g/cm3, 100 g/dm3and less than 8.68×106 cells/cm3, respectively. When the density of M. aeruginosa cells was below 8.68×106 cells/cm3, the removal efficiency of cyanobacteria was above 99.21% at the dose of 100 g/dm3. The pomegranate peel and sodium alginate, as natural materials, were safe and innocuous, providing simple operation, low cost and high availability. Therefore, the hydrogel beads offer favorable characteristics in M. aeruginosa removal.

A series of surfactant mixtures which consist of DAH (dodecylamine hydrochloride) and fatty acids (FAD) were made in this study. The characteristics of these fatty acids/DAH mixtures, including surface tension, critical micelle concentration (CMC) and adsorption onto coal were investigated. The reverse flotation results with these fatty acids/DAH mixtures (FAD) and DAH were compared with each other. Experimental results showed that the fatty acids/ DAH mixtures have lower CMC and γcmc than DAH. The adsorption test indicated that more amine molecules would adsorb preferentially onto the bubbles surface in FAD solutions than that in DAH solutions. Reverse flotation results showed that about 50% surfactant dosage was saved under the same froth product yield. Only 28% froth product yield was obtained in the presence of 1.66 kg/Mg DAH. However, when 0.83 kg/Mg hexadecanoic acid/DAH mixture (C16D) surfactant was used, the froth product yield reached 29%. Dodecanoic acid/DAH mixture (C12D) surfactant a showed better performance with a high mineral matter recovery similar to that with tetradecanoic acid/DAH mixture (C14D) and higher combustible recovery than with C14D and C16D.

Opis:
This paper proposes an improved method of solving the permutation problem inherent in frequency-domain of convolutive blind source separation (BSS). It combines a novel inter-frequency dependence measure: the power ratio of separated signals, and a simple but effective bin-wise permutation alignment scheme. The proposed method is easy to implement and surpasses the conventional ones. Simulations have shown that it can provide an almost ideal solution of the permutation problem for a case where two or three sources were mixed in a room with a reverberation time of 130 ms.

The great-circle is the shortest distance between two points on the surface of the earth. When planning a ship’s sailing route (waypoints and forward speeds) for a specific voyage, the great circle route is commonly considered as a reference route, especially for ocean-crossing seaborne transport. During the planning process, the upcoming sea weather condition is one of the most important factors affecting the ship’s route optimization/planning results. To avoid encountering harsh conditions, conventional routing optimization algorithms, such as Isochrone method and Dynamic Programming method, have been developed/implemented to schedule a ship’s optimal routes by selecting waypoints around the great circle reference route based on the ship’s operational performances at sea. Due to large uncertainties in sea weather forecast that used as inputs of these optimization algorithms, the optimized routes may have worse performances than the traditional great circle sailing. In addition, some shipping companies are still sailing in or making charting contracts based on the great circle routes. Therefore, in this study, a new optimization algorithm is proposed to consider the voluntary speed reduction with optimal speed configuration along the great circle course. The efficiency of this method is investigated by comparing these two methods for optimal route planning with respect to ETA and minimum fuel consumption. A container ship sailing in the North Atlantic with full-scale performance measurements are employed as the case study vessels for the comparison.

In this paper the possibility of using the pyrolysis oil derived from waste tyres as a collector in flotation of coal was evaluated. The pyrolysis oil was obtained at the initial and final pyrolysis temperatures of 400 and 700 oC, respectively, and the heat holding time of 30 min. Flotation results indicated that the pyrolysis oil emulsion showed stronger collecting ability than diesel and the concentrate ash content just slightly increased in comparison to flotation in the presence of diesel. The contact angle measurement and immersion microcalorimetry test correlated well with the flotation data. The Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy results demonstrated that diesel and pyrolysis oil emulsion is physically adsorbed on the coal surface.

This paper considers the degree of competition among small and medium-sized container ports located in a multi-port gateway region. The level of port competition is evaluated by means of an analysis of the revealed preferences in the port-calling pattern of container feeder vessels deployed on their various links and routes. Unit of analysis is feeder vessel sailing legs and ports stays at/between adjacent container ports. At these ports’ terminals, ships are moored and loading and unloading of containers are performed. The vessel movement data is provided by the Automatic Identification System (AIS). A study of the principal container ports in the Oslo Fjord area is performed, measuring the actual container feeder traffic during the year of 2015. It is demonstrated to which extent ports in the Oslo Fjord region are acting as substitutes, and to which extent they are functioning more as a complement to each other.

The wave energy, as a clean and non-pollution renewable energy sources, has become a hot research topic at home and abroad and is likely to become a new industry in the future. In this article, to effectively extract and maximize the energy from ocean waves, a vertical axisymmetric wave energy converter (WEC) was presented according to investigating of the advantages and disadvantages of the current WEC. The linear and quadratic equations in frequency-domain for the reactive controlled single-point converter property under regular waves condition are proposed for an efficient power take-off (PTO). A method of damping coefficients, theoretical added mass and exciting force are calculated with the analytical method which is in use of the series expansion of eigen functions. The loads of optimal reactive and resistive, the amplitudes of corresponding oscillation, and the width ratios of energy capture are determined approximately and discussed in numerical results.

The speed ratio is an important factor that must be considered when two vessels will course change to avoid collision. In the process of the research on Personifying Intelligent Decision-making for Vessel Collision Avoidance (short for PIDVCA), it is found that the effect of collision avoidance based on the existing “International Regulations for Prevention Collision at sea” (short for COLREGS) is greatly affected by the high speed ratio (k=Vt/V0≥1.5). Through the analysis on the geometric change law of two vessels’ relative motion in Open waters, the effects of the responsibility for the ship collision avoidance under the COLREGS and special case for high-speed ratio is discussed. According to the collision avoidance measures taken for two vessels encounter situation, some reasonable suggestions are put forward and the simulation experiments that based on ship's intelligent collision avoidance simulation platform are given to support the idea.

Dynamiczne projektowanie w warunkach niepewności uwzględniające problem cyklu życia staje się coraz bardziej atrakcyjnym podejściem w projektowaniu inżynieryjnym. Jednym z ważniejszych zadań jest obliczenie na etapie projektowania kosztu cyklu życia, który można wykorzystać jako funkcję celu lub jako ograniczenie. Koszt cyklu życia to suma wszystkich kosztów poniesionych podczas cyklu życia produktu, wliczając w to koszty projektu, rozwoju, produkcji, eksploatacji, obsługi, wspomagania obsługi oraz likwidacji. W artykule analizujemy kilka modeli kosztu cyklu życia i ilustrujemy ich zastosowania. Następnie, biorąc pod uwagę modele kosztu cyklu życia, budujemy modele projektowania zorientowanego na niezawodność (design-for-reliability models), projektowania w granicach zadanej niezawodności (design-to-reliability models) oraz projektowania odpornego (robust design model). Modele te, poprzez uwzględnienie problemów związanych z cyklem życia, mogą pomagać inżynierom w przygotowaniu niezawodnych i odpornych projektów produktów bądź systemów.
Dynamic design under uncertainty considering lifecycle issue has become more and more attractive in the engineering design. One of more important task is to calculate the life cycle cost in the design, which used as objective function or constraints. Life cycle cost is the total cost incurred in the life cycle of a product, including design, development, production, operation, maintenance, support and disposal cost. In this paper, we analyze several life cycle cost models and illustrate their applications. Then we build dynamic design-for-reliability, design-to-reliability and robust design models by considering the life cycle cost models. These models can help engineers to make a reliable and robust design for a product or system by considering the life cycle issues.
