    The given names used by the Lithuanian minority in PolandThis article analyses the given names of members of the Lithuanian minority in Poland. It is based on a Lithuanian telephone directory issued in Puńsk in 1997, in which a significant number of personal names are recorded in the Lithuanian form. Their comparison with the corresponding data in two Polish telephone directories from a similar period revealed over two hundred “given name + surname” pairs in two language versions: Lithuanian and Polish. About eighty pairs in which the names differed in spelling and morphology have been extracted for analysis.In the analysis of given names, also Kazimierz Rymut’s name dictionary (1995) has been used to establish the frequency of selected names in the Suwalki region and beyond. The statistically significant higher turnout of names of Lithuanian origin in the Suwalki region than in the rest of Poland was confirmed in almost all cases. It was also established that the occurrence of Lithuanian given names in unassimilated form is more frequent there. The frequency of the given names which appear in the aforementioned Lithuanian telephone directory and on the lists of high school graduates in Puńsk from 1959–1995 was compared to the ranking lists of given names used in Poland and Lithuania. This enabled some observations concerning the choice of names by Polish Lithuanians.It appears that Lithuanian anthroponymy plays an important role in consolidating the Lithuanian minority in Poland, and that it can be viewed in terms of an in-group code. At the same time, the parallel use of two language versions of given names – Polish and Lithuanian – allows for the selection of the form depending on the communicative situation. Imiona mniejszości litewskiej w Polsce W artykule podjęto próbę analizy imion członków mniejszości litewskiej w Polsce. Bazą materiałową pracy jest wydana w 1997 roku w Puńsku litewska książka telefoniczna, w której antroponimy znacznej części abonentów zapisane zostały w postaci litewskiej. Porównując je z odpowiadającymi im danymi w dwóch polskich książkach telefonicznych ze zbliżonego okresu, uzyskano ponad dwieście par imię + nazwisko w dwóch wersjach językowych: litewskiej i polskiej, z których wyekscerpowano ok. 80 par imion różniących się grafią i morfologią.W analizie imion posłużono się też słownikiem imion K. Rymuta (1995), badając frekwencję wybranych imion na Suwalszczyźnie i poza nią. Potwierdzono istotną statystycznie wyższą frekwencję na Suwalszczyźnie prawie wszystkich imion pochodzenia litewskiego, a także częstsze występowanie tam imion litewskich w postaci niezasymilowanej do polszczyzny. Wykorzystując wspomnianą litewską książkę telefoniczną, spisy absolwentów liceum w Puńsku z lat 1959–1995 i listy rangowe frekwencji imion w Polsce i na Litwie, porównano też wybory imiennicze Litwinów mieszkających w Polsce, odnotowując podobieństwa do listy litewskiej.Jak stwierdzono, antroponimia litewska pełni istotną rolę konsolidującą mniejszość litewską w Polsce i stanowi swego rodzaju kod dla wtajemniczonych. Jednocześnie równoległe funkcjonowanie dwóch postaci językowych imienia – polskiej i litewskiej – pozwala na wybór postaci antroponimu zależnie od sytuacji komunikacyjnej.

    Opis:
    The appellativisation of a given name, especially when related to its stigmatisation, is not frequent in Polish. All the more amazing is the rapid career of the name Janusz as an appellative. The phenomenon was first apparent in such phrases as janusze plaży or janusze polskiej gospodarki, used on the Internet and in the print media in the early 2010s, with a clear peak of the popularity of this type of phraseology observed in 2015. The names of Janusz’s wife Grażyna or of his son Seba (Sebastian) have not yet been appellativised, but they also create an image of “typical Poles”, overusing beach windscreens, wearing socks with sandals, stealing pencils from Ikea or trying to impress their neighbours at all costs. Based on an analysis of corpus-type data, this article attempts to explain why this name has become a symbol of the shameful traits of Poles, what associations it evokes, and to what degree it has been subject to appellativisation.
    Apelatywizacja imienia, zwłaszcza wiążąca się z jego stygmatyzacją, nie zdarza się w języku polskim często. Tym bardziej zadziwia błyskawiczna kariera imienia Janusz jako apelatywu. Po raz pierwszy o januszach plaży czy januszach polskiej gospodarki można było przeczytać w internecie i prasie tradycyjnej bodaj na początku drugiej dekady tego wieku, przy czym wyraźny szczyt popularności tego typu frazeologizmów przypadł na rok 2015. Żona Janusza Grażyna czy syn Seba nie doczekali się jeszcze apelatywizacji swych imion, ale też kreują wizerunek typowych Polaków, odgradzających swój grajdołek plażowy parawanem, noszących skarpetki do sandałów, kradnących ołówki z Ikei czy za wszelką cenę starających się zaimponować sąsiadom. W artykule – w oparciu o analizę danych o charakterze korpusowym – podjęta zostanie próba wyjaśnienia, dlaczego akurat to imię stało się symbolem wstydliwych cech Polaków, jakie budzi skojarzenia i w jakim stopniu uległo apelatywizacji.

    Unofficial surnames used by the Lithuanian minority in Poland: The linguistic and cultural heritage of the Polish-Lithuanian borderlandUnofficial surnames are rare because surnames today are generally official in character. However, in the case of Polish citizens who are Lithuanians, they are a phenomenon that has long been present, although visible mostly – and until the entry into force of the Act on National Minorities (2005) predominantly – in intra-group communication. Considering that until recently it was not possible to register the Lithuanian forms of surnames and use them officially, this anthroponymic cultural heritage has long been transmitted between generations only informally.On the basis of the analysis of approximately 330 pairs of surnames extracted from telephone directories covering the area of compact residence of the Lithuanian minority (two of them in Polish, and one – in Lithuanian), the article discusses from the socioonomastic point of view (cf. Ainiala, 2016) the phenomenon of parallel functioning among the members of the Lithuanian minority in Poland of two surname forms: an official Polish one and an unofficial Lithuanian one. The latter differs from the former graphically and morphonologically, and in almost 30 per cent of cases their match is not unambiguous (i.e. one Polish form corresponds to more than one Lithuanian form, and, conversely, one Lithuanian form – to two or even more forms in Polish). It should be emphasised that the presence of formal exponents of Lithuanianness (Lithuanian diacritics, inflectional endings, feminine suffixes) does not necessarily imply the Lithuanian etymology of the surname. The situation is additionally complicated by the fact that in everyday intra-group communication members of the Lithuanian minority in our country use not literary Lithuanian, in which they write their surnames in minority documents (such as Lithuanian minority periodicals Aušra, Suvalkietis, Šaltinis, Terra Jatwezenorum, or bilingual yearly school reports in the schools with Lithuanian as the language of instruction), but the dialect of the Dzuks, in which their surnames are pronounced.The picture is complemented by interviews conducted in early 2018 with about 40 members of this minority, and by contributions on the Internet forum of Lithuanians in Poland regarding their attitude to the official (re-)Lithuanisation of surnames. The former revealed the opinions of older respondents (over 40 years of age), and the latter – the views of younger people. Nazwiska nieurzędowe mniejszości litewskiej w Polsce – dziedzictwo językowo-kulturowe pogranicza polsko-litewskiegoNazwiska nieurzędowe spotyka się rzadko; nazwiska zwykle mają bowiem obecnie charakter oficjalny. W przypadku obywateli polskich narodowości litewskiej są one jednak zjawiskiem występującym od dawna, choć ujawniającym się głównie – a do czasu wejścia w życie „Ustawy o Mniejszościach Narodowych” (2005) przede wszystkim – w komunikacji wewnątrzgrupowej. Wobec braku (do niedawna) możliwości zalegalizowania formy litewskiej, to antroponimiczne dziedzictwo kulturowe jest zwykle przekazywane międzypokoleniowo jedynie nieformalnie.Na podstawie analizy ok. 330 par nazwisk, wyekscerpowanych z obejmujących obszar zwartego zamieszkania mniejszości litewskiej książek telefonicznych (dwóch polskich i jednej litewskojęzycznej), artykuł omawia pod kątem socjoonomastycznym (por. Ainiala, 2016) zjawisko równoległego funkcjonowania wśród członków mniejszości litewskiej w Polsce nazwisk w dwu postaciach: oficjalnej polskiej i nieoficjalnej litewskiej. Te ostatnie różnią się od oficjalnych graficznie oraz morfonologicznie, a w przypadku blisko 30% wzajemne przyporządkowanie obu grup nie jest jednoznaczne (tzn. jednej formie polskiej odpowiada więcej niż jedna litewska, bądź odwrotnie, jednej litewskiej dwie lub nawet więcej polskich). Należy podkreślić, że obecność formalnych wykładników litewskości (litewskie diakrytyki, końcówki fleksyjne, sufiksy żeńskie) nie musi implikować litewskiej etymologii nazwiska. Sytuację dodatkowo komplikuje fakt, że zamieszkujący północno-wschodni kraniec Polski członkowie mniejszości litewskiej w naszym kraju na co dzień posługują się nie literackim językiem litewskim, którym zapisują swe nazwiska w dokumentach mniejszościowych (takimi jak czasopisma mniejszości litewskiej „Aušra”, „Suvalkietis”, „Šaltinis”, „Terra Jatwezenorum”, czy dwujęzyczne świadectwa szkolne w szkołach z litewskim językiem nauczania), a gwarą dzukowską, i z reguły taką też ich nazwiska mają postać mówioną.Obrazu dopełniają przeprowadzone na początku 2018 roku wywiady z około 40 przedstawicielami tej mniejszości oraz wypowiedzi na forum Litwinów w Polsce, dotyczące ich stosunku do oficjalnej (re)lituanizacji nazwisk. Wywiady umożliwiły poznanie zdania respondentów starszych (powyżej 40. roku życia), zaś posty w Internecie – opinii osób młodszych.

    The article presents the names bestowed on Polish children in Lithuania after 1990, a topic which merited little scholarly attention to date. First, by way of introduction, the specific Lithuanised written forms of these names are described and compared with their standard Polish and Lithuanian equivalents. The naming trends are then analysed on the basis of three sets of data: the top ten male and female names among Lithuanian Poles (as compared with those in Lithuania and in Poland) in the years 1991, 2000, 2010 and 2013; the names of 1284 students, all born after 1990, from fifteen Polish-language schools in Lithuania; finally, the names given in the years 1991–2011 to children in the municipality of Salčininkai (Soleczniki), where the percentage of Poles is the highest in Lithuania. Interviews with members of the Polish minority in Lithuania, focusing on naming issues, have also been used for fact-finding. The research shows that the name choices of Poles in Lithuania are becoming increasingly different from those in Poland, yet not exactly convergent with Lithuanian trends. Poles almost never use names of Lithuanian origin and prefer instead simple names, not necessarily of Polish origin, that look in writing almost the same in Polish and in Lithuanian. Especially striking among these are Germanic names, such as Edward, Ernest, Eryka, Greta, never particularly popular in Poland.

    The article presents the most frequent surname in Lithuania — Kazlauskas. Referring to the article “Mysterious Lewandowski” by K. Skowronek (2000), an attempt has been made to account for this frequency in three various ways. First, the principles behind the quantitative structure of anthroponomasticons (Zipf’s law) and the loss of surnames (genetic drift) are discussed. Then the Slavic origin of the surname under consideration has been highlighted as a typical trait of the majority of surnames in Lithuania. In connection with this fact, it has been stressed that caution must be exercised in proposing a thesis on its origin as a translation from Lithuanian on a mass scale, since this thesis requires plentiful empirical evidence. Finally, the etymology of the name is analyzed. Morphologically it is a typical surname derived from a toponym. This supposition is additionally supported by the existence in Poland of numerous localities called Kozłów, Kozłowo or similar name; these in turn are most likely to have been derived from appellative-based personal names of their owners or inhabitants, such as Kozieł.

    As diversity, equity and inclusion policies gain momentum in the Global North, the strikingly low visibility of women in Polish public space is being addressed not only via bottom-to-top activism but also through initiatives by local governments. This, in turn, results in controversies over the very need for gender equality in urban naming, as well as over the commemoration-worthiness of particular personages. The present paper aims to assess the changes that have taken place in Poland since the beginning of 2018, when an analysis of the 12 biggest cities revealed a persistent under-representation of women as namesakes in street naming. We offer a quantitative analysis and then focus on four selected case studies, each exemplifying one type of situation: open conflict, covert tactics, and two combinations of surface vs core values relationship.
