Statistical literacy is the ability to master statistical concepts, applications, calculations and interpretations. This research is an experiment that aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a learning module for statistical literacy. The presented research focused on discussing and describing the effectiveness of a learning module for statistical literacy. The selected sample involved the public health students of STIKES BBM Majene; 20 students in class A as the sample for try-out I and 25 students in class B as the sample of try-out II by using One Group Pre-test and Post-test Design. The data was collected with the use of an achievement test of statistical literacy, and data was analyzed with the use of Descriptive Statistical Analysis, N-Gain Calculations, and Paired Sample t Test. Research results revealed that the average N-Gain in try-out I was 0.59, and the average N-Gain in try-out II was 0.61, each of which was in the moderate category. Moreover, in try-out I, the mean score of the post-test was 22.15, which was higher than and significantly different from the mean score of the pre-test, which was 10.66. Meanwhile, in try-out II, the mean score of the post-test was 22.68, which was higher than and significantly different from the mean score of the pre-test, which was 10.96. Therefore, the learning module for statistical literacy was effective.

Palm oil mills discharge raw effluent with high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of about 25 000 mg O2/dm3 . Conventional effluent treatment system uses ponds with a long hydraulic retention time of about 55–85 days, but the reduction of BOD is usually halted at 100–250 mg O2/dm 3. Further reduction of BOD to below 20 mg O2/dm3 to meet regulation requirement needs further advanced treatment. This study evaluates the efficiency of an effluent polishing plant installed at a palm oil mill targeting final effluent BOD below 20 mg O2/dm3. Characteristic of the incoming and treated effluent, dissolved oxygen in the aeration ponds and the effluent flow rate of the treatment plant have been determined. Due to low process throughput at the mill, the polishing plant operated at only 60% of its designed capacity. Treatment of effluent showed reduction of BOD from 39.3±5.8 to 6.1±3.8 mg O2/dm3, i.e., a reduction by 80–94%. Colour – a newly proposed regulation parameter – was reduced from 1081±69 to 845±60 ADMI, i.e., by 11–30%. This study indicates that while the treatment of effluent to reduce the BOD to below 20 O2/dm3 O2/dm3 is feasible, reduction of colour to less than 100 ADMI is not achievable.

The present study was conducted as part of a larger study that aimed to compare moral judgment competence and moral preferences among Pakistani students of public and private sector educational institutes and religious institutes and also to measure the pattern of development of moral judgment competence of students within these institutes. The validation study completed in two phases, during the 1st phase data were collected from the students of grade 8 to 16 from public sector schools and colleges of Rawalpindi city. Very low mean c-score was observed (M = 13.60, SD = 9.05), the test came out to be valid on preference hierarchy criterion but its validity on the cognitive-affective parallelism and Quasi- simplex structure criteria could not be established due to low c-scores of the sample. In the second phase an additional sample from one private sector and two public sector universities was collected. The analysis of the combined sample (N = 246) showed no significant improvement of c-scores (M = 13.94, SD = 9.53). The test meets well the preference hierarchy criterion but on the other two criteria results remain inconclusive due to low variance in the sample. The low c-scores are explained on the basis of three assumptions; (1) poor quality of education, (2) dogmatic religiosity, and (3) weak and instable political structure of Pakistani society.

Lymphangiomatous polyps of the palatine tonsil are a rare clinical entity with only about 30 odd cases ever reported. All the cases in the literature were described as unilateral tonsillar diseases, except for one paediatric case which had bilateral tonsillar involvement. Due to its unilateral presentation and suspicious appearance similar to tonsillar malignancy, lymphangiomatous polyps may cause heightened anxiety to both patients and doctors alike on a routine oropharyngeal examination. Owing to its rarity and a variety of complex nomenclatures, this condition may also be confusing to the treating otolaryngologist as well as junior pathologist. We report an extremely rare case of bilateral tonsillar lymphangiomatous polyps in a snoring child that was successfully treated surgically via tonsillectomy.
Polipy o charakterze naczyniaka chłonnego migdałka podniebiennego są w praktyce klinicznej odnotowywane bardzo rzadko – dotychczas opisano jedynie około 30 przypadków. Zazwyczaj stwierdzano jednostronne zmiany w obrębie migdałka podniebiennego, tylko u jednego dziecka migdałki były zajęte obustronnie. Polipy o charakterze naczyniaka chłonnego mogą budzić zaniepokojenie pacjenta oraz lekarza ze względu na umiejscowienie po jednej stronie oraz wygląd przypominający nowotwór migdałka. Zważywszy na rzadkość występowania oraz różnorodność nazewnictwa jednostka ta może być również trudna do rozpoznania zarówno dla otolaryngologa, jak i niedoświadczonego patologa. Przedstawiamy niezwykle rzadki przypadek obustronnych polipów migdałka o charakterze naczyniaka chłonnego u dziecka z problemem chrapania, u którego skuteczny okazał się zabieg tonsillektomii.

The study examined the effect of the cornhusk fibers (CHF) content on the structure, physical, mechanical and water barrier properties of composites obtained on the basis of corn starch (CS) and kenaf fiber (KF), used in the amount of 6 wt%. Sorbitol in the amount of 30 wt% was used as a plasticizer. Hybrid biocomposite films were obtained using the solution casting technique. The addition of CHF reduced the water absorption and solubility of the film in water. Increasing the CHF content in the composite resulted in greater film thickness, weight and density. Thanks to good biocompatibility (FESEM) the composites showed higher tensile strength and Young’s modulus. However, elongation at break was lower. FTIR results confirmed the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the matrix and the fibers. The best properties were obtained at 6 wt% CHF content.
W pracy zbadano wpływ zawartości włókien z łusek kukurydzy (CHF) na strukturę, właściwości fizyczne, mechaniczne i barierowe dla wody kompozytów otrzymanych na bazie skrobi kukurydzianej (CS) i włókna kenaf (KF), stosowanego w ilości 6% mas. Jako plastyfikator użyto sorbitol w ilości 30% mas. Folie biokompozytów hybrydowych otrzymywano techniką odlewania z roztworu. Dodatek CHF zmniejszał absorpcję wody i rozpuszczalność folii w wodzie. Zwiększenie zawartości CHF w kompozycie skutkowało większą grubością, gramaturą i gęstością folii. Dzięki dobrej biozgodności (FESEM) kompozyty wykazały większą wytrzymałość na rozciąganie oraz moduł Younga. Jednak wydłużenie przy zerwaniu było mniejsze. Wyniki FTIR potwierdziły obecność międzycząsteczkowych wiązań wodorowych między osnową polimerową i włóknami. Najlepsze właściwości uzyskano przy zawartości 6% mas. CHF.

This present research work was conducted to determine the phytotoxic effects on tropical native plants, Ludwigia octovalvis, in order to assess its application for phytoremediation of crude oil sludge in contaminated sand. For this purpose of study, L. octavalvis plants were planted in containers containing different proportion of spiked real crude oil sludge in sand (10%, 50%, and 100% (v/v)). Degradation of crude oil sludge by L. octovalvis was measured in terms of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and was compared with TPH degradation inside control crates without plants. The findings indicated that the average TPH removal after a prolonged 42-day exposure period was high. The degrees of TPH degradation were 67.0, 42.4 and 46.2% in sand spiked with real crude oil sludge at 10, 50 and 100% respectively, whereas the degradation was only 34.7, 29.1 and 20.5% for the unplanted containers at the same respective proportions of crude oil sludge in sand. These findings give evidence that L. octovalvis has the capability to degrade hydrocarbons in crude oil sludge.

TiO2 is one of the most widely used metal oxide semiconductors in the field of photocatalysis for the self-cleaning purpose to withdraw pollutants. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is recommended as a stabilizer and booster during preparation of water-soluble TiO2. Preparation of SnO2/TiO2 thin film deposition on the surface of ceramic tile was carried out by the sol-gel spin coating method by adding different amount of PEG (0g, 0.2g, 0.4g, 0.6g, 0.8g) during the preparation of the sol precursor. The effects of PEG content and the annealing temperature on the phase composition, crystallite size and the hydrophilic properties of SnO2/TiO2 films were studied. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra revealed different phases existed when the films were annealed at different annealing temperatures of 350°C, 550°C and 750°C with 0.4 g of PEG addition. The crystallite sizes of the films were measured using Scherrer equation. It shows crystallite size was dependent on crystal structure existed in the films. The films with mixed phases of brookite and rutile shows the smallest crystallite size. In order to measure the hydrophilicity properties of films, the water contact angles for each film with different content of PEG were measured. It can be observed that the water contact angle decreased with the increasing of the content of PEG. It shows the superhydrophilicity properties for the films with the 0.8 g of PEG annealed at 750°C. This demonstrates that the annealed temperature and the addition of PEG affect the phase composition and the hydrophilicity properties of the films.
