Opis:
The aim of the article is to present the debate on the teaching and educational effectiveness of school trips, described in Lviv “Szkoła”, the oldest Galician educational magazine –, from the moment the periodical was founded in 1868 until Poland regained independence. In the pages of this magazine, the leading representatives of the teaching community of the time, often professionally active teachers, expressed their opinions on the subject, analysing both the possibilities and the risks related to a broader use of these forms of teaching work. They often put forward original proposals regarding formal issues of the organisation of trips and outings, also referring to their own experiences in this area. The debate was not free from polemics but a majority of its participants positively assessed trips as a means of physical, health, hygienic and aesthetic education of students. The trips were also recognised to be a perfect opportunity to conduct illustrative geography or history lessons, and to shape civic and patriotic attitudes.

Czasopismo „Szkoła” należy do najstarszych polskich periodyków pedagogicznych. Zaczęło ukazywać się na terenie Galicji, we Lwowie w 1868 roku. Jako organ prasowy Towarzystwa Pedagogicznego dążyło do zjednoczenia i aktywizacji nauczycieli. Na jego łamach przeważały zatem teksty poświęcone szeroko pojmowanej problematyce pedeutologicznej. Jednak Redakcja „Szkoły” nie unikała także artykułów dotyczących zagadnień wychowania w rodzinie. W latach 1868–1918 w periodyku zamieszczono kilkadziesiąt tego typu tekstów. Ich szczegółowa analiza pozwala odpowiedzieć na pytanie, jakie zadania wychowawcze przypisywali nauczyciele polskim rodzinom w okresie zaborów. Wśród podejmowanych w nich zagadnień warto przede wszystkim zwrócić uwagę na wzajemne relacje domu i szkoły czy propagowanie racjonalnych zasad wychowania w rodzinie.
“Szkoła” magazine is one of the oldest Polish pedagogical periodicals. It was established in Galicia, in Lvov in 1868. As the press organ of the Pedagogical Association it strived towards the unification and mobilisation of teachers. It presented mostly text on widely understood educational issues. However the editorial section of “Szkoła” did not avoid articles on the issues of upbringing in the family. In the period from 1868 to 1918 the periodical ran several dozens of such texts. Their detailed analysis allows one to answer the question of what upbringing tasks were assigned by the teachers to Polish families during the partitions period. Among the issues taken up in the magazine it is worthwhile to look at the mutual relations of home and school or the propagation of rational upbringing principles in the family.

oldest pedagogical journal published in Galicia, Eastern Europe, in the last 30 years of the 19th century. To date, these problems have not been analysed in detail in literature on the subject. The journal, devoted in particular to teachers’ training colleges and folk schools, was recommended to teachers in the south of Poland (which at that time was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) as an important means of self-education. It was emphasized that knowledge acquired in teachers’ training colleges had to be broadened and the candidates for teachers, as well as professional Galician educators, should do it on their own. This concerned, among other things, the knowledge of the idiosyncrasies of working with disabled pupils. An analysis of the annual volumes of the journal from 1868–1899 demonstrates that its editors and collaborators dealt with issues in the field of oligophrenopedagogy, education of the deaf and people with impaired hearing, education of the blind and social rehabilitation. Articles published in the journal familiarized the readers with the history and contemporary problems of special education. They also supplied valuable educational and methodological instructions for parents, guardians and teachers of disabled children.

Franciszek Majchrowicz was a renowned Lvov-based educator and a historian of education. Throughout many years of his professional career he was involved in teaching in secondary schools and teachers’ training colleges. At the same time, he was actively participating in educational initiatives as an activist. Majchrowicz was a co-editor of the periodical Rodzina i Szkoła [Family and School], co-operated with the Council of National Education in Galicia (Eastern Poland) and with the School Board of the Lvov province. His publishing output included numerous articles and pedagogical texts as well as historical and educational works, including one of the first textbooks for teaching history of education in teachers’ training colleges (with many editions throughout the years 1901-1924). Majchrowicz also published source materials for the history of Polish education, promoted the educational ideas of the Commission of National Education and attempted to develop the history of education into a coherent academic discipline for researchers and a subject in the national curriculum for educators. The hitherto available historical and educational literature lacks comprehensive and detailed information on his university education or professional training and qualifications. The present work attempts by no means to be exhaustive or to offer a comprehensive coverage of a full biography of Franciszek Majchrowicz as an educator and historian of education. It merely complements some facts and explanations that have already been published earlier, and provides some new information that may help resolve doubts concerning certain aspects of his professional career presented in the hitherto published body of works on the subject. It is mostly due to the archival material from Lvov (this mainly comprises students catalogues and minute books of doctoral examinations from the National District Archive), constituting the source base for the present work, that providing complete answers to such issues as the course of Majchrowicz’s studies, his doctoral dissertation procedure and the scope of his teacher’s examination, have become possible. The above source material made it also possible to conclude with certain remarks regarding the masters Majchrowicz had in great esteem and their influence upon research and academic interests of the Lvov-based educator and historian of education.

Opis:
The objective of this paper is to present the economic situation of employees’ households in Poland. The household’s available income per person was applied as a measure of household’s financial situation. The level and structure of income of employees’ households (performing manual and nonmanual jobs) are presented in the context of its main socio-demographic and territorial characteristics. The paper makes an attempt to identify causes of income diversity. All the conclusions are based on the results of analysis of household budget surveys carried out by the Central Statistical Office in 2005.

Opis:
Stanislaw Kot, one of the creators of the history of education as a scientific discipline, studied at the University of Lvov between 1904 and 1909. His special line was classical philology, Polish philology and, for two terms, legal studies. The hitherto written relevant historical and educational literature does not address these issues in detail - Kot's professional life in Cracow is far better known and elaborated. However, on the basis of the analysis of the Lvov archival material from the State District Archive in Lvov (primarily student catalogues and examination protocols for doctoral examinations), it is possible to reconstruct the course of studies of this well-known historian of education until the very last stage of his doctoral achievements, i.e. his successful defense of his dissertation in 1909. The scope of this study was fairly wide. The comprehensive and extensive knowledge in the history of literature, both Polish and general, history, pedagogy, philosophy and psychology that he gained in Lvov, as well as the excellent knowledge of the Polish language and classical languages, formed a firm base for Kot to pursue professional career on his own. It was the Lvov scholarly environment that shaped him as a researcher and scholar and made it possible for him to not only debut as a scholar but also to encounter and come into contact with scholars from the academic centers of Cracow. Thanks to his brilliantly-written doctoral dissertation, supervised by Wilhelm Bruchnalski and Józef Kallenbach from Lvov, and to his first publications in the periodical 'Muzeum' (which he presented at a pedagogical seminar prepared by Boleslaw Mankowski), S. Kot quickly gained a reputation as a precise scholar among the university circles of the town. Also in the later period of his professional career he remained in close contact with his former university lecturers and cooperated with them, for example, on the work on the successive volumes of the publication of book series Biblioteka Narodowa (National Library).

The article presents the contribution of the first in Poland assistant professor in the field of the history of education, professor of Jagiellonian University, Antoni Karbowiak (1856-1919) to the development of regional historical and educational studies. Karbowiak devoted much attention to the propagation of these studies in his publications, in which he emphasized their import ant role and significance for further development of the history of education. He stressed the need to conduct collective regional studies on a broader scale, according to a precisely defined plan. He contended that only in this way valuable material can be compiled, which - elaborated by well-prepared scholars - shall enable the creation of worthwhile syntheses. He himself undertook “local” research, as he called it, and repeatedly brought readers’ attention to the question of preserving source material found in their closest surroundings for the history of education. He encouraged the creation of regional research organizations and the stimulation of historical consciousness of Polish society, especially children and youth. In order to win new contributors for regional historical and educational studies, he worked out a special 13-point questionnaire on the basis of which it was possible to gather information about local schools and their history. In his publications, Antoni Karbowiak emphasised that even the smallest papers dealing with regional issues are supposed to contribute to the explanation of educational phenomena in broader contexts. This concept by Antoni Karbowiak perfectly combines into the convention of modem regional studies.

The aim of the article is to analyse the pedeutological texts published in the era of the Partitions of Poland in the pages of the oldest Galician pedagogical periodical, which “Szkoła” was. The journal, edited by teachers and educational activists, addressed mainly to folk school teachers, published uninterruptedly for 70 years, is for today’s researchers an invaluable source of knowledge about the functioning of Galician education and its employees. The editors and collaborators of the journal often took up such important subjects as vocation, role models of folk teachers, relations with pupils’ family homes or difficult realities of teacher’s work. Teachers received a lot of specific advice concerning the upbringing and education of pupils, frequently from older and experienced colleagues. They could also learn a catalogue of traits and attitudes expected from folk teachers, concerning also their own families or taking up additional work.
