Opis:
Electrophysical stimulation is used to support fracture healing and bone regeneration. For design optimization of electrostimulative implants, in combination with applied human donor bone or synthetic bone scaffolds, the knowledge of electrophysical properties is fundamental. Hence further investigations of the structural properties of native and synthetic bone is of high interest to improve biofunctionality of bone scaffolds and subsequent healing of the bone defect. The investigation of these properties was taken as an objective of this study. Therefore, surgically extracted fresh cylindrical and consecutively ashed cancellous bone samples from human osteoarthritic femoral heads were characterized and compared to synthetic bone substitute material. Thereby, impedance spectroscopy is used to determine the electrophysical properties and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) for analysis of structural information of the bone samples. Conductivity and permittivity of fresh and ashed cancellous bone amounted to 1.710–2 S/m and 7.5106 and 210–5 S/m and 7.2103 , respectively. Electrical conductivity and dielectric permittivity of bone scaffold resulted in 1.710–7 S/m and 49. Analysis of the structural properties showed that the synthetic bone scaffolds made of Brushite exhibited some reflections which correspond to the native bone samples. The information in present study of the bone material (synthetic and autologous) could be used for later patient individual application of electrostimulative implants.

Mid-urethral slings have become the gold standard treatment of stress urinary incontinence in women. Their tensile properties should be evaluated to measure how they wear off with time. Our objective was long-term assessment of the tensile properties of 2 synthetic tapes (TVT-O and I-STOP) after in vivo implantation in rats in terms of elastic modulus. Methods: Strips from both meshes were implanted in the abdominal wall of 30 rats, which were sacrificed at 5 time intervals. Their fibers were untangled to single components. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS), strain at UTS and the elastic modulus of each fiber type were measured. Results: I-STOP maintained UTS and strain over time, while TVT-O UTS and strain were significantly reduced. However, the elastic modulus of both tapes remained constant. Conclusions: Both meshes maintained their stiffness and elasticity with time. Elastic modulus could be an appropriate factor to predict long-term implantation outcomes. The clinical significance of such findings remains to be demonstrated by long-term analysis.

Opis:
A multiscale model for simulating the hydrodynamic behavior of catalytic bale packings has been proposed. This model combines computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and macroscopic calculation. At small scale calculation, the CFD model includes 3-D volume-of-fluid (VOF) simulation within representative elementary unit (REU) under unsteady-state conditions. The REU constitutes gauze and catalyst domain, and porous media model is applied. At large scale calculation, a new mechanistic model deduced from the unit network model is employed. Based on liquid split proportion from small scale calculation, liquid distribution of the entire bale packing can be predicted. To evaluate different packing design, three common bale arrangements, i.e. one-bale, nine-bales and seven-bales, are compared. The area-weighted Christiansen uniformity coefficient is introduced to assess the distribution performance. A comparison between simulation and experimental results is made to validate the multiscale model. The present methodology is proved to be effective to analysis and design of catalytic distillation columns.

Opis:
An efficient and accurate method to test Escherichia coli (E. coli) adhesion to intestinal epithelial cells will contribute to the study of bacterial pathogenesis and the function of genes that encode receptors related to adhesion. This study used the quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) method. qPCR primers were designed from the PILIN gene of E. coli F18ab, F18ac, and K88ac, and the pig β-ACTIN gene. Total deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from E. coli and intestinal epithelial cells (IPEC-J2 cells) were used as templates for qPCR. The 2−ΔΔCt formula was used to calculate the relative number of bacteria in cultures of different areas. We found that the relative numbers of F18ab, F18ac, and K88ac that adhered to IPEC-J2 cells did not differ significantly in 6-, 12-, and 24-well culture plates. This finding indicated that there was no relationship between the relative adhesion number of E. coli and the area of cells, so the method of qPCR could accurately test the relative number of E. coli. This study provided a convenient and reliable testing method for experiments involving E. coli adhesion, and also provided innovative ideas for similar detection methods.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of hydrogen content, temperature, reaction time for the reduction of forging scale which is mainly composed of hematite (Fe2O3). All reductive reactions were performed over the temperature range of 700 to 1200°C as well as 0.1 to 1 atm of hydrogen partial pressures. The results showed that the mechanism for the reduction of iron oxides using hydrogen gas was not a simple process, but proceeded in multiple reduction stages thermodynamically. The iron oxide was almost completely reduced to metallic iron powder with 91 wt.% of iron content in the forging scale at 0.1 atm of hydrogen partial pressure. The content of iron was however found to be increased with increasing hydrogen partial pressure from 0.1 to 1 atm with regardless of temperatures. The metallic iron powder was obtained with the mean size of 100 μm and more porous structure was observed.

Opis:
Mechanical Seal use highly efficient alternative water having a great quantity of an aqueous solution and has an advantage no corrosion brine. Metal Carbide composites have been investigated as potential materials for high temperature structural applications and for application in the processing industry. The existing Mechanical seal material is a highly expensive carbide alloy, and it is difficult to take a price advantage. Therefore the study of replacing body area with inexpensive steel material excluding O-ring and contact area which demands high characteristics is needed. The development of WC-Ni base carbide alloy optimal bonding composition technique was accomplished in this study. To check out the influence of bonding temperature and time, bonding characteristics of sintering temperature was experimented. The bonding statuses of this test specimen were excellent. The hardness of specimen and bonding rate were measured using ultrasound equipment. In this work, Powder of WC (involved VC, Cr), Co and Mo2C mixed by attrition milling for 24hours. Nanostructured WC-27.6wt.%Ni-1.5wt.%Si-0.11wt.%VC-1.1wt.%B4C composite were fabricated at 1190°C by high temperature vacuum furnace. To check out the influence of bonding temperature and time, bonding characteristics of sintering temperature was experimented. Its relative density was about 99.7%. The mechanical properties (hardness and fracture toughness) were 87.2 HRA and 4.2 M·Pam1/2, respectively. The bonding status of this test specimen was excellent and the thickness of bonding layer was 20 ~30§ at 1050 and 1060°C bonding temperature.

Hydrogen production through steam reforming of ethanol (SRE) over the Ca-modified Co/SBA-15 catalysts was studied herein to evaluate the catalytic activity, stability andthebehavior of coke deposition. The Ca-modified SBA-15 supports were prepared from the Ca(NO3)2•4H2O (10 wt%) which was incorporated to SBA-15 by incipient wetness impregnation (assigned as Ca/SBA-15) and direct hydrothermal (assigned as Ca-SBA-15) method. The active cobalt species from the Co(NO3)2•6H2O (10 wt%) was loaded to SiO2, SBA-15 and modified-SBA-15 supports with incipient wetness impregnation method to obtain the cobalt catalysts (named as Co/SiO2, Co/SBA-15, Co-Ca/SBA-15 and Co/Ca-SBA-15, respectively). The prepared catalysts were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and BET.The catalytic performance of the SRE reaction was evaluated in a fixed-bed reactor. The results indicated that the Co/Ca-SBA-15 catalystwas preferential among these catalysts and the ethanol can be converted completely at 375 °C. The hydrogen yield (YH2) approached 4.76 at 500 °C and less coke deposited. Further, the long-term stabilitytest of this catalyst approached100h at 500 °C and did not deactivate.

Purpose: Footwear and equipment worn by military personnel is of importance for them to be able to meet the physical demands specific to their profession daily activities. Aim of the present study was to investigate by means of gait analysis how army-provided footwear and equipment influence the range of motion of hip, knee and ankle joints as well as stride length. Methods: Thirty-two soldiers were subjected to gait analysis on a treadmill by way of video recordings and goniometric measurements. Results: The stride length increased when military shoes are worn. We found no influence on stride length in connection to increased loading. The weight of the shoes represents the decisive factor. Neither shoes nor equipment changed the range of motion of the knee joint.Weight of equipment affected range of motion of the hip joint. The range of motion of the upper and lower ankle joints was mainly influenced by the properties of the shoes. Conclusions: Military footwear and weight of equipment influence stride length and range of motion of joints of the lower extremities in a specific way. Shape of material is the decisive factor.

Opis:
Overexertion and pain of the musculoskeletal system may occur partly owing to load application by the equipment. Both the weight of equipment and the duration of loading are relevant. The aim of the present study was to examine the extent of loading and resultant strain in the trunk muscles. Therefore, the trunk posture of soldiers and muscular activity in reaction to different equipment components (helmet, load-carrying equipment, gun and backpack) were evaluated. Electromyography was performed and a visual assessment of body axis was conducted based on standardised planar images. Data indicate that the activity of the trunk muscles examined (latissimus dorsi, trapezius and pectoralis major) is dependent on the weight and distribution of the equipment components. Activity in the trapezius muscle, for instance, was doubled during specific load application. Moreover, the method of carrying the rifle had a significant influence on the activity of the trapezius muscle (one-sided decrease of activity by 50%). Subjects were able to stabilise the body axis in the coronal plane through increased muscle activity, however, in the sagittal plane a compensatory ventral inclination of the body was observed. Uneven load distribution can lead to an irregular strain on the musculoskeletal system.

Opis:
This paper develops a joint copula reliability model for systems subjected to dependent competing risks caused by two degradation processes and random shocks. The two degradation processes follow gamma processes and the random shocks follow a non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP). Their interdependence relationship is modeled by a copula function, which is determined by a two-stage method based on simulated data. It is shown that the proposed model can provide more precise results than the model without considering the dependent relationship. Through the proposed reliability model, two maintenance models are studied and compared. It is found that the inspection cost has significant effects on the choosing of maintenance policy.

To meet the increased demands of new exhaust and CO2 limits a research project of Volkswagen R&D, the Technical University of Poznan and the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences has been initiated; its main target was the development and adaptation ICOS (Internal Combustion Optical Sensor) – an infrared sensor of LaVision for on-line measurements of EGR-rate in cylinder of an engine under operation. The objective of the project was to determine by different optical signals the CO2 concentration, the EGR rate and residual gas which are cycle-resolved in the cylinder. In this paper the principle of measurement of optical indication has been described. The infrared sensor was validated by a one-cylinder diesel engine and compared to a synchronously running fast gas sampling system (CSV). Finally the practical application of various parameter variations is illustrated in the determination of the EGR and residual gas rate. Thus a new measurement technique for the development of future generations of engines introduced.

Opis:
Aluminum (Al) nanoparticles were prepared by the DC arc plasma method in order to study the influence of Al nanoparticles on the thermal decomposition of cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX). The Al powder was characterized by TEM, BET, XRD, and LSA, and the thermal decomposition of RDX and RDX/nanometer Al were examined by DSC. Based on the DSC curves, the thermal decomposition parameters of the samples were calculated and compared. The results showed that the particles of Al are homogeneous and fine, and that the surface is smooth. The TEM results showed that the nanoparticles are spherical, with an average diameter of approximately 60 nm. The peak temperature of RDX decomposition decreased by 4.36 K at the heating rates of 5, 10, and 20 K/min after the addition of nano-Al powder, and the activation energy for decomposition decreased by about 11 kJ/mol. Furthermore, the critical explosion temperature was also reduced. These observable changes indicate that Al nanoparticles act as catalysts for the thermal decomposition of RDX.
