We present a symmetry based analysis of diffraction intensities of transition metal dichalcogenide nanotubes. Obtained results point out specific features of the intensity distribution that are related to group parameters. It is possible to read out all the group parameters from diffraction patterns, and therefore to characterize nanotube, since symmetry group uniquely determines the chiralty indices.

Opis:
In this study, we compared the compositions, antimicrobial and potential antioxidant activities of essential oils of two Thymus endemic, wild-growing species – T. malyi Ronninger and T. lykae Degen et Jav. No information about its composition and biological activities of oils has been reported to the present day. Forty three compounds were identified from T. malyi and major component was α-pinene (26.4%). In the case of T. lykae, forty four compounds were identified, with geranyl acetate (35.1%) as the main component. Antioxidant activities of the oils were evaluated using DPPH assay. The antimicrobial effect of essential oils were tested against Gram-negative, Gram-positive bacteria, and two fungi. Results indicated higher antibacterial activity of the essential oils of T. lykae in comparison with T. malyi, while for antifungal activity, it was reverse. The essential oils from T. malyi and T. lykae possess antioxidant and antimicrobial activities and could be used as a potential source of natural antioxidants for the food industry.

Magnesium is a bioessential cation with an important role in the function of excitable cells both in health and disease. Magnesium has therapeutic use as an anticonvulsant, anaesthetic, analgesic and antiarrhythmic agent. The aim of this work was to examine in detail the effects of high extracellular Mg2+ on the nerve cell membrane using classical electrophysiology techniques. The experiments were conducted on Retzius neurons in the isolated segmental ganglia of the leech Haemopis sanguisuga. Intracellular recording of membrane potential and electrical activity, as well as current clamp experiments to examine membrane input resistance and excitability, were performed prior to and during application of 20 mmol dm-3 MgCl2. The paper presents our findings on the effects of high Mg2+ on basic electrophysiological properties and activity of Retzius cells. Depolarization of the membrane potential, a decrease in the frequency of spontaneous activity, an increase in threshold potential, a decrease in cell excitability and an increase in input membrane resistance were found following an application of high Mg2+ solution. The underlying mechanisms of the overall suppressive action of Mg2+ on our cell model are discussed to be multiple Mg2+ effects on different ion channel conductances, with a possibly dominant blockade of Na+ channels and a probable modulation of activity of Ca2+-activated K+ channels by Mg2+.

Opis:
In this paper we have analysed invasive flora of Medvednica Nature Park, Croatia with respect to their origins, life forms, systematic positions, types of seed dispersal, Ellenberg indicator values and spatial distributions using MTB 1/64 grid units for analyses. A total of 27 invasive plant species, belonging to 14 families, were recorded with Asteraceae being the most frequently occurring family. Therophytes were the most common life form, as is generally true of Croatian invasive plants; however, hemicryptophytes and geophytes were more frequent in Medvednica. Here, invasive plants originated mainly from both Americas with slightly lower portion in comparison to all Croatian invasive plants, while contrary was the case when comparing those originated from Asia. The most widespread species was Erigeron annuus (L.) Pers., and the species with the lowest occurrence were Chamomilla suaveolens (Pursh.) Rydb and Datura innoxia Mill. A multiple regression model explains 44% of the spatial variability in the invasive plants data per MTB 1/64 unit, using the number of all recorded plant species, the average elevation and the lengths of paths and roads as estimators. The latter two variables also had the most influence on the ordination axes in analyses of the spatial distribution of seed dispersal types present in each MTB 1/64 unit. Anemochory was the most frequent type of seed dispersal.
