Opis:
For the first time, simultaneous influences of porosities, tangential constraints of boundary edges, surrounding elastic media and elevated temperature on the buckling and postbuckling behaviors of a functionally graded toroidal shell segment are investigated in this paper. Porosities exist in the functionally graded material (FGM) according to even and uneven distributions. Properties of constituent materials are assumed to be temperature dependent and effective properties of the porous FGM are determined using a modified rule of mixture. Governing equations are based on the classical shell theory taking into account geometrical nonlinearity and interactive pressure from surrounding elastic medium. Multi-term analytical solutions are assumed to satisfy simply supported boundary conditions and the Galerkin method is adopted to derive nonlinear load – deflection relations and buckling loads. Parametric studies are carried out to analyze the effects of porosity, shell geometry, degree of tangential edge constraint, elevated temperature and elastic media on the buckling resistance and postbuckling strength of toroidal shell segments under a torsional load. The study reveals that tangential edge restraints have considerably beneficial and detrimental influences on the nonlinear stability of torsion-loaded FGM shells at room and elevated temperatures, respectively. The results also find out that the shear layer and the elastic layer of surrounding medium significantly enhances and alleviates the buckling resistance capacity and severity of the snap-through response of the torsion-loaded porous FGM toroidal shell segment, respectively.

Vietnam is one of the main centers of generic diversity for Juglandaceae worldwide. In this study, we present for the first time a province-wide distribution of all 3 subfamilies, 7 genera, and 11 Vietnamese species, and give an update on the habitats of all Vietnamese Juglandaceae species, their uses, and current threats. Juglandaceae are found throughout Vietnam. However, most species occur predominantly in the north- ern part of the country between 600 and 1200 m. Some taxa range is found extensively from sea level up to 2,500 meters above sea level. According to the IUCN Red List, Rhoiptelea chiliantha, Carya sinensis, and Pterocarya tonkinensis are threatened while Engelhardia spicata, E. serrata, Alfaropsis roxburghiana, Pterocarya stenoptera are classified as least concerned (Carya tonkinensis is threatened locally, and Engelhardia spicata var. colebrookiana and Platycarya strobilacea merit “threatened” designation in Vietnam’s Red Data Book. The most frequent threats are logging, land-use change, and habitat destruction due to artificial wood planta- tions or road construction. Until now, no conservation measures have been applied for any of the species in Vietnam, although some species occur in national parks. Our study gives an important update on the current diversity and distribution of Juglandaceae in Vietnam. We point out the need for a correct assessment of the threat status of various species on a national and international scale to protect the rarest and most endangered of them. Further research, the use of various forms of protection of individual taxa and/or their habitats, and drawing the attention of an international group of researchers to the urgent need to work together to protect biodiversity in Vietnam hot spots are necessary.

Opis:
Euarthropods have a tough exoskeleton that provides crucial protection from predation and parasitism. However, this is restrictive to growth and must be periodically moulted. The moulting sequence is well-known from extant arthropods, consisting of: (i) the long inter-moult stage, in which no changes occur to the hardened exoskeleton; (ii) the pre-moult stage where the old exoskeleton is detached and the new one secreted; (iii) exuviation, when the old exoskeleton is moulted; and (iv) the post-moult stage during which the new exoskeleton starts as soft, thin, and partially compressed and gradually hardens to the robust exoskeleton of the inter-moult stage. Trilobite fossils typically consist of inter-moult carcasses or moulted exuviae, but specimens preserving the post-moult stage are rare. Here we describe nine specimens assigned to Symphysurus ebbestadi representing the first group of contemporaneous fossils collected that preserve all key stages of the moulting process in one taxon, including the post-moult stage. They were collected from a single lens in the Tremadocian part of the Fezouata Shale Formation, Morocco. Based on cephalic displacement and comparison to other trilobite moults, one specimen appears to represent a moulted exoskeleton. Four specimens are typical inter-moult carcasses. Four others are wrinkled and flattened, with thin exoskeletons compared to inter-moult specimens, and are considered post-moult individuals. These S. ebbestadi specimens illuminate the preservation and morphology of the post-moulting stage, characterised by strong anterior-posterior exoskeleton wrinkling, as well as overall body flattening and reduced visibility of thoracic articulations. Being found in the same lens, these specimens likely represent the first preserved in-the-act mass moulting event. The displayed sequence of moulting suggests the moulting process in trilobites was comparable to modern arthropods, and conserved within euarthropod evolutionary history.

Opis:
The main objective of this study was to assess the environmental impact of the subsurface geological structure in Nam Son landfill by hydrogeophysical method. The Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), Self-Potential (SP) and Very Low Frequency (VLF) method was used for geological structure investigation. Three profiles (total 900 m long) of two-dimensional ERT, VLF density sections and 180 SP data points scattered within the study area near the disposal site were implemented. Surface water and groundwater samples were collected from 10 sites in the area for hydrochemical analysis. Interpretations of geophysical data show a low resistivity zone (<15 Ω m), which appears to be a fully saturated zone with leachate from an open dumpsite. There is a good correlation between the geophysical investigations and the results of hydrochemical analysis.
Stwierdzono wysoki poziom korelacji pomiędzy rezultatami badań geofizycznych a wynikami analiz chemicznych.

Opis:
Dumpstones and dropstones up to 0.8 m in size occur in a silty/sandy Weichselian glaciolacustrine succession near Dwasieden on Rügen Island in the SW Baltic Sea (NE Germany). The deposits are exceptional because two levels of dumpstones and dropstones are present, suggesting two dumping phases interrupting characteristic fine-grained glaciolacustrine sedimentation. Plastic downwarping of sediments below the dumpstones and dropstones result in soft-sediment deformation structures. The distribution and orientation of the long axes of the clasts are useful tools for the reconstruction of the state of the lake bottom, as well as for the water depth. The horizontal position of the gravels and boulders (parallel to the bedding) suggests deposition in relatively shallow-water. The dumping events are linked to iceberg rafting in a glacial lake during the Weichselian Glaciation (MIS 2).

Opis:
Background: With an increase of the number of features in a vehicle, the computational requirements also increase, and vehicles may contain up to 100 Electronic Control Units (ECUs) to accommodate these requirements. For cost-effectiveness reasons, amongst others, it is considered desirable to limit the growth of, or preferably reduce, the number of ECUs. To that end, mixed criticality is a promising approach that received a lot of attention in the literature, primarily from a theoretical perspective. Aim: In this paper, we address mixed criticality from a practical perspective. Our prime goal is to extend an OSEK-compliant real-time operating system (RTOS) with mixed criticality support, enabling such support in the automotive domain. In addition, we aim at a system (i) supporting more than two criticality levels; (ii) with minimal overhead upon an increase of the so-called criticality level indicator of the system; (iii) requiring no changes to an underlying operating system; and (iv) featuring further extensions, such as hierarchical scheduling and multi-core. Method: We used the so-called adaptive mixed criticality (AMC) scheme as a starting point for mixed criticality. We extended that scheme from two to more than two criticality levels (satisfying (i)) and complemented it with specified behavior for criticality level changes. We baptized our extended scheme AMC*. Rather than selecting a specific OSEK-compliant RTOS, we selected ExSched, an operating system independent external CPU scheduler framework for real-time systems, which requires no modifications to the original operating system source code (satisfying (iii)) and features further extensions (satisfying (iv))). Results: Although we managed to build a functional prototype of our system, our experience with ExSched made us decide to rebuild the system with a specific OSEK-compliant RTOS, being µC/OS-II. We also briefly report upon our experience with AMC* and suggest directions for improvements. Conclusions: Compared to extending ExSched with AMC*, extending µC/OS-II turned out to be straightforward. Although we now have a basic system operational and available for experimentation, enhancements of the AMC*-scheme are considered desirable before exploitation in a vehicle. However, there are some problems raising when vegetable oil is used as fuel for diesel engines such as highly effected by cold weather, lower general efficiency, separation in layer if mixed with diesel oil and so on. To overcome that disadvantiges, the authors propose a new idea that to use a continuous fuel mixer to blend vegetable oil with diesel oil to make so called a mixed fuel supplying to diesel engines inline. In order to ensure a quality of the mixed fuel created by continuous mixer, a homogeneous testing was introduced with believable results. Then, the continuous mixer has been installed into fuel supply system of diesel engine 6LU32 at a lab of Vietnam Maritime University in terms of checking a real operation of the fuel continuous mixer with diesel engine.

Lean has established itself as the primordial approach to obtain operational excellence. Its simple and intuitive techniques focus on reducing lead time through continuous improvement, involving all levels of employees in the organization. However, the rate of successful implementations has remained low. This paper contributes to the understanding of continuous improvement in a Lean context, by analyzing a database of almost 10.000 improvement actions, from 85 companies, covering the time frame 2010–2018. It discusses categories of actions, their impact and cost, as well as key characteristics of the companies. It proposes an objective criterion to identify “success” and “failure” in Lean implementation and tries to link these to operational results. It is probably the first time an analysis of this magnitude on the subject has been performed.

Since the thorax and pelvis are primary determinants of normal and pathological walking, it is important to know how gait performance is influenced when the trunk is constraint. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of a thoracolumbosacral orthosis (TLSO) on gait performance in healthy adults during overground walking. Methods: Fourteen healthy volunteers walked with and without TLSO. Outcome measures consisted of spatiotemporal parameters and clinically important joint angular time profiles of the lower limbs. Joint angular time profiles were assessed in the sagittal, frontal and transversal plane. A paired t-test was used for discrete parameters and spm1d for assessing the joint angular time profiles. Results: Walking with a constraint resulted in decreased stride time and step time, increased step width and cadence. In the sagittal plane, no significant differences were observed regarding joint kinematics in the hip, knee and ankle. In the frontal plane, decreased adduction during stance and abduction during swing was observed in the hip. In the transversal plane, increased external rotation of the hip and increased internal rotation of the ankle was seen when wearing a contstraint. Conclusions: Wearing a TLSO can already bring forth significant changes in gait performance, suggesting an important relationship between trunk movements and mobility.

Opis:
This article presents an efficient search method for representative circular and unconstrained slip surfaces with the use of the tailored genetic algorithm. Searches for unconstrained slip planes with rigid equilibrium methods are yet uncommon in engineering practice, and little publications regarding truly free slip planes exist. The proposed method presents an effective procedure being the result of the right combination of initial population type, selection, crossover and mutation method. The procedure needs little computational effort to find the optimum, unconstrained slip plane. The methodology described in this paper is implemented using Mathematica. The implementation, along with further explanations, is fully presented so the results can be reproduced. Sample slope stability calculations are performed for four cases, along with a detailed result interpretation. Two cases are compared with analyses described in earlier publications. The remaining two are practical cases of slope stability analyses of dikes in Netherlands. These four cases show the benefits of analyzing slope stability with a rigid equilibrium method combined with a genetic algorithm. The paper concludes by describing possibilities and limitations of using the genetic algorithm in the context of the slope stability problem.
