Opis:
Research on heat exchange has been carried out for more than five decades because of its importance in process industries and power generation plants. Heat exchanger experiencing cross flow are vulnerable to flow-induced vibration. This vibration causes the interaction of tubes with the baffle resulting in a fretting wear of the tubes. The present study focuses on fretting wear analysis of different tube materials. Fretting wear tests were performed on aluminum, copper and stainless steel instrumented central tubes against mild steel baffle. For each tube material the tests were performed for three different test durations i.e. 60 minutes, 120 minutes and 180 minutes at a cross flow velocity of 0.55 m/s. It was observed that vibrational amplitude of the flexible test tube is affected by its weight. A scanning electron microscope was used to analyze and measure the sizes of wear scar. The results indicated that wear loss in case of aluminum tube is the highest while that in case of stainless steel tube is the lowest.

Opis:
Photovoltaic technology is one of the fastest growing energy among the different type of renewable energies that are available for electricity generation. This is due to the availability of the natural sun rise, and the non polluted energy that is free from emission of carbon dioxide (CO2). This paper presents a typical modeling of photovoltaic cell under different irradiations level, in order to monitor the behavior of the (Voltage-Current) V-I and (Power-Voltage) P-V characteristics. The simulation of the proposed model was performed in MATLAB/SIMULINK and Simscape environment. Single diode model of the PV system was presented in the mathematical modeling of the proposed system. Simulation results of different I-V and P-V characteristics were also presented.

Opis:
A field experiment was conducted from June to March in years 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 at the Research Farm, University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Nigeria, to evaluate the yield response of cassava-okra intercrop as influenced by population densities and time of introducing okra, as well as assessing the yield advantages of the intercropping system. The experiment was a 3 x 3 factorial combination of treatments, fitted in a randomized complete block design, with four replications. The population densities of okra (33,333, 40,000 and 50,000 plants ha-1 equivalent) into cassava constituted the main plots, while the time of introducing okra into cassava (okra sown at the same time with cassava in mid June; okra introduced into cassava in mid July and okra introduced into cassava in mid August) were assigned to the subplots. Results of study showed that sowing okra at the same time as cassava in mid June, at the population density of 33,333 plants ha-1 produced the highest yields of cassava (46.8 t ha-1 and 39.2 t ha-1 respectively in years 2013 and 2014) and okra (7.7 t ha-1 and 7.5 t ha-1 respectively in years 2013 and 2014) in a cassava-okra intercrop. This level of interaction also gave the highest total intercrop yields, highest land equivalent coefficient (LEC) values, highest land equivalent ratio (LER) values of 1.86 and 1.84 and highest percentage (%) land saved (46.2 % and 45.7 %) respectively recorded in years 2013 and 2014. The implication of study showed that it is most advantageous having both crops in intercrop when okra was sown at the same time as cassava in mid June, at the population density of 33,000 plants ha-1. This should therefore be recommended for Makurdi location, Nigeria.

Opis:
The compositional graded quaternary barriers (GQBs) instead of ternary/conventional quantum barriers (QBs) have been used to numerically enhance the efficiency of AlGaN-based ultraviolet light-emitting diode (LED). The performance of LED with GQBs is examined through carrier concentrations, energy band diagrams, radiative recombination, electron and hole flux, internal quantum efficiency (IQE), and emission spectrum. As a function of the operating current density, a considerable reduction in efficiency droop is observed in the device with composition-graded quaternary barriers as compared to the conventional structure. The efficiency droop in case of a conventional LED is ~77% which decreased to ~33% in case of the proposed structure. Moreover, the concentration of electrons and holes across the active region in case of the proposed structure is increased to ~156% and ~44%, respectively

Opis:
Efforts from laboratory experiments and some practical approaches show that several building materials can be derived from agricultural waste and be used as partial or complete replacement of conventional building materials. These efforts however have not completely provided the solution for the need of alternative building materials. This is due to the lack of generalised information on the development of the materials, which most often test few properties of the materials, and without any meaningful studies of the economic implication of the innovations. This research work was aimed to establish whether there is cost benefit in utilising building materials derived from agricultural waste or not, and to what extent if any? The cost of utilising Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), Rice Husk Ash (RHA), and Oil Palm Shell (OPS) in concrete, sandcrete blocks, bonding and plaster mortars was then evaluated. The cost was arrived at by adopting the actual cost of the material by volume and multiplying it by the actual quantity by volume used. The study discovered that 41% cost reduction in mass concrete is the highest cost saving while 12% in plaster mortar is the lowest. An overall cost saving of about 24% in the total cost of materials recorded. However, the study discovered that overall cost saving is dependent on the distance of the agricultural waste from production or construction site. Lack of readily available appropriate technology for processing some of the agricultural waste to building material was identified as a major challenge.
