Opis:
This paper shows that imaging and analysis of morphological features of the surface of modern structured abrasives in the pre-machining state can be carried out by means of electron microscopy supported by image processing and analysis techniques. The acquisition of SEM micrographs for active surfaces of the four (A6, A30, A65, A160 grades) monolayer abrasive discs 237AA (3M) with Trizact™ abrasive grains was carried out by the use of Quanta 200 Mark II (FEI Company) high-resolution scanning electron microscope. Visual analysis allowed for the observation of abrasive grains mainly in terms of the occurrence on their surface of various defects resulting from the technology of their production. For a parametric analysis, the authors used the Fiji 1.51s software (J. Schindelin et al.) which, in turn, made it possible to determine the values of the basic geometrical parameters characterizing the abrasive grains in the selected area of the active surface of assessed abrasive tool. The observation and measurement instruments used in the experimental studies described in this work and the proposed methodology may present an interesting alternative approach to the assessment of the surface morphology of advanced structured abrasives.

Opis:
The term optical profilometry is used in relation to a group of methods used in a rapid, non-destructive, and non-contact assessment of surface topography. Those methods play a significant role in the area of a modern advanced laboratory and industrial 3D measurements. With the development of profilometric methods, a large progress in the construction of optical profilometric instruments and measuring sensors used in them, including confocal sensors based on the chromatic light aberration phenomenon (CLA) has been observed for several years. The paper shows that the Talysurf CLI 2000 multisensory optical profilometer equipped with a CLA sensor can be used in high-accuracy 3D measurements of the uncirculated and circulated coins. The assessment of such type objects characterized by a high variability of altitude can be extremely helpful in analyzing the actual metrological properties of measuring equipment used in their measurements.

Opis:
The Eurocode 3 concerning thin-walled steel members divides members subjected to compression into four classes, considering their ductility. The representatives of the class C4 are short bars, for which the load-capacity corresponds to the maximum compression stresses less than the yield stress. There are bars prone to local buckling in the elastic range and they do not have a real post-elastic capacity. The failure at ultimate stage of such members, either in compression or bending, always occurs by forming a local plastic mechanism. This fact suggests the possibility to use the local plastic mechanism to characterise the ultimate strength of such members. The present paper is based on previous studies and some latest investigations of the authors, as well as the literature collected data. It represents an attempt to study the plastic mechanisms for members in eccentric compression about minor axis and the evolution of plastic mechanisms, considering several types of lipped channel sections.
