Opis:
The publication dedicated to the balancing of mineral resources deposits in Poland has been issued since the 1950s, in 2020 the 68th paper book was published. Several institutions have been responsible for the report, in succession: the Central Geology Office (till 1985), the Ministry of the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources (in 1986–1987) and the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute (PGI-NRI) (since 1988). At present, carrying out the national balance of mineral resources is one of the tasks performed by the state geological survey which is fulfilled by the PGI-NRI according to the Geological and Mining Law. Since 2003, the task has been financed by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. There are two main data sources for the mineral resources balancing in Poland: 1) geological documentations collected in the National Geological Archive of PGI-NRI; 2) forms sent to PGI-NRI by concession holders. Initially (in the 1950s), the number of deposits included in “The Balance...” did not exceed several hundred, whereas in the following years the figure has been systematically growing – it exceeded1,000 in 1960, 4,000 in 1986, 13,000 in 2014 and 14,000 in 2020. Such amount of data need to be processed by the special database – it is called the System of management and protection of mineral resources in Poland MIDAS which has been carried out by PGI-NRI since 1988. The publication presents the data within four raw materials groups (energy, metallic, chemical and rock) divided for chapters. There is also a chapter devoted to water defined as a mineral (brines, curative and thermal water). Each chapter provides information on the location of deposits, quality of raw materials, quantity of resources and output, and the list of deposits according to the administrative or regional order. Except for the book form, “The Balance...” is also placed as a PDF version on the website Mineral resources of Poland. This web portal, available at http://surowce.pgi.gov.pl both in Polish and English, was established to meet the needs of those interested in the mineral resources sector in Poland. Aside from “The Balance...”, it also includes: – some additional information on particular raw materials; – sets of maps presenting the occurrence of deposits in Poland and the concession areas; – data on export and import of raw materials; – selected definitions and explanations coming from the law acts.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the changes that occurred in grape production and the wine market in Poland in the years 2009-2021. In addition, an attempt was made to assess the impact of thermal conditions on the development of grape cultivation in Poland. Design/methodology/approach: Changes in the number of vineyards, grape cultivation areas, grape harvests and the production and sale of wine in Poland were analysed in detail. The analysis was conducted based on data from the National Support Centre for Agriculture (KOWR) and the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMiGW). Findings: The research indicated that grape cultivation and wine production developed dynamically throughout the period in question. It is worth noting that most of the observed changes took place in the form of an exponential trend, which also points out the level of interest shown among producers and consumers in this industry and its potential. The study also showed that the distribution of vineyards registered at KOWR relative to the thermal conditions in a given region is relatively proportional across voivodeships (provinces). The voivodeships in which, based on the average sum of active temperatures from 2009-2021, relatively conducive conditions for the development of grape cultivation existed were also indicated. Research limitations/implications: The research period covered only 11 years, this type of research requires further analysis to determine in the long-term further possibilities for the development of wine production in Poland.

Opis:
The Authors analyze the national deficit of mineral commodities (classified as strategic and critical mineral commodities) against the volume of mineral deposits in Poland, from which these commodities are obtained. The assignment of types and subtypes of minerals that are the source of extraction to the corresponding strategic and critical mineral commodities is presented. A comparison was made between the annual extraction of minerals-sources of mineral commodities and their reserves in documented deposits and the volume of exports and imports of strategic and critical mineral commodities. It was found that Poland does not have a number of mineral deposits useful as sources of mineral commodities (strategic and critical) or documented mineral reserves are not sufficient to cover the needs of the national economy for these mineral commodities. Therefore, most of the critical and strategic mineral raw materials are scarce for Poland. A new approach to the classification of critical and strategic mineral commodities and the definition of the scarcity of mineral commodities in the country was proposed. The task of the geological survey is to conduct research to increase the base of mineral resources, especially those of fundamental importance for the economy. Such works are carried out at the Polish Geological Institute for the benefit of the project of State Raw Materials Policy (still under consideration) and should be continued in subsequent years.

A piece of a meteorite that had crashed through the roof of a cottage house was find in the central Oslo quarter Rodelřkka at the beginning of March 2012. Some days later the second discovery in the melting snow of Ekebergsletta hilltop plateau triggered the hunting for meteorites in almost all sides of Oslo. The pieces of third meteorite broken by cars and spread out by snowplow was discovered on the asphalt road side by Maciek Burski, the member of Polish Meteoritical Society. Later on the missing fragments of the Maciek’s most east find was collected by Meteoritical Section members of Comet and Meteor Workshop (PKiM) with the help of local meteoritical authorities. The total mass of this unobserved fall is 6.22 kg in five pieces spread out in the eight km-long strewnfield with 200 g and 4.65 kg meteorites on the opposite ends. The Meteorite is not classified yet but unofficial information is “breccia H3-4”.

The Meteorite Section was created in 2010 on demand of Polish Fireball Network (PFN) for the meteorite searching and investigation purposes. The main task of the Section is to find the meteorites dropped from bolides registered by the Polish Fireball Network. Each year, the PFN registers several meteorite falls within our country and meteorite strewnfield inspections must be carried out at least for the masses of above 300 g estimated with the PyFN software. Only last year the PFN organized several search campaigns. Two of them are presented in the publication.

Opis:
The Polish Fireball Network (PFN) associated in Comets and Meteors Workshop monitors the sky over Poland regularly for 15 years and registers the bright fireballs over the whole country (Olech 2006; Wiśniewski 2017). Every year we observe a few meteorite falls but due to weather conditions some data are not sufficient for proper strewnfield calculations. In the collaboration with the European Fireball Network the whole territory of Poland is monitored almost regardless of the weather. The publication describes the bolide phenomena characterized by distinctive meteorite falls, so the strewnfield indicated here should become the target of further exploration expeditions.

Cosmogenic radionuclides in meteoroids are produced in space in the process of activation. These nuclides have various lifetimes in range from a few days to several hundred thousand years and can therefore be helpful in solving several problems related to the study of meteoroids and their remains, both in space and on the Earth. The simplest application of cosmogenic radionuclide decay in meteorites is to determine the terrestrial age of meteorites, especially those whose fall has not been observed. In this article, we present an additional application of cosmogenic radionuclide measurements, namely for the verification of origin of rocks that show equivocal features and may potentially represent meteorites.

Since 2010, the Meteorite Section of the Comet and Meteor Workshop (PKiM) has been systematically organizing exploratory expeditions to selected meteorite strewn fields, calculated from bolides registered with the Polish Fireball Network (PFN). Some of the expeditions organized in the period of 2018–2020, after the phenomena PF140118, PF070119, EN050120 and PF310720 are reported. All these phenomena have a common feature, they reach beyond the borders of Poland – either the analysis was developed in cooperation with the European Fireball Network (EN) or the meteorite fall took place abroad. It is clear that meteor phenomena have no boundaries and for positive research results in near-Earth space science a European cooperation is highly recommended. Many meteorites fallen from the bolides registered in the PFN are still in the strewn field waiting to be discovered. The article presents a study of the most important phenomena happened in two last years, and it is also a hint where to look for meteorites in Europe.

Opis:
The Polish Fireball Network (PFN), has been undergoing continuous development. Since then, several large grants have been obtained, which were at least partly used for modernization purposes. In recent years, two more grants have been obtained, which allowed for the expansion and modification of the existing PFN infrastructure. In 2021, the PFN76 Kozienice was modernized, but also the PFN14 Zielona Góra station was reactivated and the new PFN77 Suhora station was launched in 2022. Thanks to these improvements, the tracking of meteoroids entering the Earth Atmosphere above Poland became more accurate, which facilitates the search for meteorites and increases the chances of finding new fresh meteorites in Poland. On the night of May 10, 2021, PFN stations registered an exceptionally slow bolide. The phenomenon named PF100521 Wykrot appeared over central Poland in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship at 21:32 UT and calculations showed that some meteorites may have fallen. This phenomenon was used to conduct a series of analyzes to show how observational uncertainties affect the final results. Two variants of the results are presented in this work.
