Opis:
Flotation of lignites is inherently difficult. However, pre-heat treatment of coal is also known to make coal surfaces more hydrophobic possibly through removal of water entrapped in the structure of coal. In this context, the objective of this study was, therefore, to determine changes in the hydrophobicity of some lignites under moderately controlled heat treatment and correlate the flotation response of lignites in different salt solutions of NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2 without using any reagent. The results of flotation tests suggested that under the present test conditions, it was possible to float thermally pre-treated lignite samples of partially hydrophobic character in salt solutions in the absence of collector and frother. In addition, the effect of heat treatment on hydrophobicity, and in turn flotation was explained by a theoretical model based on extended DLVO interactions to quantify the effects of both heat treatment and salt concentration on bubble-particle interactions. The results of theoretical modeling suggested that the removal of hydrogen containing groups from coal surfaces significantly contribute to the electrical double layer and hydrophobic forces that govern the magnitude of energetic barrier and also the extent of bubble-particle attachment.

Opis:
Origanum dubium is a valuable wild oregano species of the natural flora of Antalya, Turkey. In this study, we extracted essential oil (EO) by hydro-distillation of the aerial parts of selected O. dubium chemotype with highest EO content, and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Carvacrol was the primary component (85.9%) among 24 different compounds in the EO. The volatile test showed minimum inhibitory effect of the EO against Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vesicatoria, Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli var. fuscans, and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato, at 309, 303, 318, 254, and 901 µL/mL, respectively. A 1-hour treatment of bean and tomato seeds in the volatile phase of the EO effectively sterilized the seeds from bacterial pathogens without inhibiting their germination. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on the potential for the use of O. dubium EO as a seed protectant against bean and tomato seed-borne bacterial pathogens.

Opis:
Chemical treatment with sodium hydroxide, formamide and ethyl acetate is shown to affect certain properties of paper made from recovered fibres. Sodium hydroxide treatment improves the brightness of sheets by approx. 0.12–17.2% under similar recycling conditions. All chemical treatments usually improve the tensile and burst strengths of sheets to some degree. The highest tensile and burst strength values of 42.09 Nm/g and 2.60 kPa m2/g were obtained at the first recycling stage with 10% ethyl acetate treatment (O10Et1), and these represent approximately 142.2% and 100% improvement of tensile and burst strength respectively. In contrast, although the results revealed that certain chemical treatments markedly improved both tensile and burst strengths, there is some variation observed for tear strengths. The largest improvement in tear strength (72.9%) was found at the third recycling stage with 5.0% formamide treatment (O5Fa3), followed by O10Et3 (33.9%) and O10Na3 (29.2%). It is important to note that the highest tear strength value of 9.09 Nm2/g was found at the second recycling stage of the control samples. The results clearly show that the tensile and burst strengths of sheets can be improved by certain chemical treatments, but there is no correlation with tear strengths.
