Opis:
This study describes 18 specimens representing the earliest growth parts of orthoceratoid cephalopods, most of which have been recently obtained from the Middle Ordovician strata of the Prague Basin, central Bohemia. Only about 20 specimens of Ordovician orthoceratoids displaying embryonic shell are known globally and the Bohemian material thus significantly expands their current record. The studied collection includes twelve specimens assigned to the species Bactroceras sandbergeri and shows that the morphological variability in early ontogenetic growth stages of this species was rather low. The absence of a cicatrix was definitely confirmed in this phylogenetically important cephalopod. Six other specimens investigated herein are indeterminate orthoceratids. Initial chambers, where preserved, are generally large compared to known, stratigraphically younger specimens. This is interpreted here as supporting the previously postulated trend of decreasing the egg- and hatchling sizes in orthoceratoid cephalopods from mid-Ordovician times onwards. Alternatively, the large sizes of these Bohemian orthoceratids may be explained by the position of the Prague Basin in relatively cool-water high palaeolatitudes during the Middle Ordovician.

Opis:
The Soret effect in interference field of two intensive laser beams in the thin film of magnetic fluid was used to create a periodical structure of density of magnetic particles. The structures obtained were indicated using the self-diffraction of the optical beam creating the structures. The relaxation phenomena after switching off the laser interference field were discussed in terms of the spectrum of relaxation times. This spectrum is proportional to hydrodynamic particle size distribution. The relaxation of optical grating consists of two well-defined channels, i.e. decay through single particles and small aggregates, respectively.

The effect of disorder in magnetic layers, in the spacer, and at interfaces between them on periods, amplitudes, and phases of oscillations of interlayer exchange coupling in magnetic multilayers is studied theoretically on the ab initio level. We employ the spin-polarized surface Green function technique within the tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method and the Lloyd formulation of the interlayer exchange coupling. The coherent potential approximation is used to describe the effect of alloying. The calculations are significantly simplified by employing the vertex-cancellation theorem. Numerical results illustrating the effect of various kinds of disorder in the system on the properties of the interlayer exchange coupling are presented.

Opis:
A minute Silurian oncocerid Cyrtoceras pollux, from the Prague Basin is assigned here to the genus Pomerantsoceras. The only so far known species of this genus comes from the Upper Ordovician (Hirnantian) of Estonia. Pomerantsoceras thus represents, except for un−revised poorly understood taxa, the single known oncocerid genus surviving the end−Ordovician extinction events. Cyrtoceras pollux is unusual among the Silurian nautiloids because of its small shell. Colour pattern characterised by a few longitudinal bands on the entire circumference of the shell is here reported in oncocerids. Longicone and only slightly curved small shells as in Pomerantsoceras are unusual among nautiloids and resemble straight shells of orthocerids and pseudorthocerids, in which the colour pattern consists of straight colour bands. Consequently the shell shape as well as the colour pattern should be regarded as adaptive convergence with orthocerids and pseudorthocerids. It supports the hypothesis that colour pattern functioned as camouflage and its evolution was under adaptive control. In addition, several types of the shell malformations including anomalous growth of septa, shell wall and pits on an internal mould are described.

We use the density-functional theory to calculate the total energy of mixed crystals (Ga,Mn)As with a small concentration of various donors. We find that the formation energy of Mn depends strongly on the partial concentrations of Mn in the substitutional and interstitial positions, and on the concentration of other dopants. The composition dependence of the formation energies represents an effective feedback mechanism, resulting in the self-compensation property of (Ga,Mn)As. We show that the partial concentrations of both substitutional and interstitial Mn increase proportionally to the total concentration of Mn.

Opis:
We investigate the compositional dependence of the total energy of the mixed crystals (Ga,Mn)As co-doped with As, Sn, and Zn. Using the ab initio linear muffin-tin orbital coherent potential approximation method we find a correlation between the incorporation of acceptors (Mn, Zn) and donors (Sn, antisite As). In particular, the formation energy of As$\text{}_{Ga}$ is reduced by approximately 0.1 eV in the presence of Mn, and vice versa. This leads to the self-compensating behavior of (Ga,Mn)As.

Opis:
Five cephalopod specimens from the Lower Devonian of Bohemia (Czech Republic) preserve colour patterns. They include two taxonomically undeterminable orthoceratoids and three oncocerid nautiloids assigned to the genus Ptenoceras. The two fragments of orthocone cephalopods from the lowest Devonian strata (Lochkovian, Monograptus uniformis Zone) display colour patterns unusual in orthoceratoids. They have irregular undulating and zigzag strips that are preserved on counterparts of adapertural regions of specimens flattened in shale, despite their original aragonitic shell having been completely dissolved. These are probably the result of the proteinous pigment inside the shell wall, being substituted during diagenesis by secondary minerals leaving only an altered trace of the original shell. Orthoceratoids from sediments unsuitable for preservation of this feature discussed here thus demonstrate an exceptional case of preservation of colour patterns, not only within Devonian cephalopods but also within other Devonian molluscs. Three specimens of Ptenoceras that preserve colour patterns come from younger Lower Devonian strata. Oblique spiral adaperturally bifurcating bands are preserved in P. alatum from the Pragian and zigzags in P. nudum from the Dalejan. Juvenile specimen of Ptenoceras? sp. from the Pragian exhibits highly undulating transversal bands—a pattern resembling colour markings in some Silurian oncocerids. Dark grey wavy lines observed on the superficially abraded adapical part of a phragmocone of nautiloid Pseudorutoceras bolli and interpreted formerly to be colour markings are here reinterpreted as secondary pigmented growth lines. Other Devonian fossils including a single brachiopod and several gastropods from the Barrandian Area with preserved colour patterns are mentioned. Variety of cephalopod colour patterns, their taxonomic significance, function and significance for palaeoecological interpretation, palaeoenvironmental conditions favouring colour pattern preservation and systematic affiliation of taxa with colour pattern preserved are discussed.

Opis:
An electron-beam generated plasma (EBGP) ion source for nuclear spectroscopy purposes at YASNAPP (YAdernaya Spektroskopya NA Putchkah Protonov - nuclear spectroscopy using proton beams) isotope separation on-line facility is presented. Working conditions both in on- and off-line mode are presented and discussed. Formation of a potential trap inside a discharge chamber is an advantage of the presented construction, enabling relatively high ionization efficiencies (2-5%) even for hard-to-ionize elements like Be, Ti, V, Zr, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rd, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt. The paper presents estimation of critical values of working parameters that enable formation of the ion trap leading in consequence to high efficiency of ionization. The optimal temperature of the discharge chamber and cathode walls is found to be in the range 2600-2800 K. Calculations of the output rates of ions produced in the on-line mode are also presented as well as the constraints on the half-life time of obtained nuclides imposed by construction details like the target material and its thickness.
