Opis:
The structure of thin water films during the rupture process was investigated by a new approach, which combines molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) with image processing analysis. The analysis procedure was developed to convert MDS trajectories to readable 3D images. The water films were studied at different thicknesses by MDS to determine the critical thickness at which the film ruptures. The potential energy of each specific film thickness during the simulation time was analyzed, and the results showed that the potential energy of stable films remained unchanged while the potential energy kept decreasing for films which ruptured during the simulation time. By applying the new procedure, the molecular porosity, which is defined as the void fraction between the volume of molecular pores in the water film and the total volume of the water film, was calculated. The results of molecular porosity for different film thicknesses during the simulation time suggested a critical molecular porosity as 49%. In other words, stable films have a molecular porosity of less than 49%. If a water film has a molecular porosity greater than 49%, rupture occurs during the simulation.

Opis:
Isoflavones in soybean have been well-known with many health-promoting effects on humans. This study aimed to purify isoflavones from the crude soybean extract by the static adsorption/desorption process on macroporous resins. A screening test of four commercial resins: D101, AB-8, Amberlite(R) XAD4, and Diaion HP20 according to their adsorption/desorption characteristic for isoflavones was investigated. All four resins showed high adsorption and desorption characteristics in which D101 resin was chosen as the most suitable resin for purifying isoflavones. Compositional analysis showed that daidzin and genistin were the main isoflavones in the crude soybean extract. The adsorption isotherms data of total isoflavones, daidzin, and genistin fitted well with the Langmuir model with R2>0.98. The dynamic adsorption conditions for the purification process of isoflavones on the D101 resin-packed column were selected at the bed volume (BV) of 200 mL, feed volume of 3.75 BV, and flow rate of 1.5 BV/h. The dynamic desorption was carried out with the elution solution of 70% (v/v) ethanol, elution volume of 2.5 BV, and flow rate of 1 BV/h. The total isoflavone content in the purified extract was 8.70-fold higher than its initial content in the crude soybean extract with a recovery yield of nearly 80%. The study results reveal a strong possibility for large-scale production of isoflavones for further application in functional food products or pharmaceutical products.

Opis:
Fibril formation of proteins and peptides is associated with a large group of major human diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, prion disorders, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, type 2 diabetes, etc. Therefore, understanding the key factors that govern this process is of paramount importance. The fibrillogenesis of polypeptide chains depends on their intrinsic properties as well as on the external conditions. In this mini-review we discuss the relationship between fibril formation kinetics and the sequence, aromaticity, hydrophobicity, charge and population of the so called fibril-prone conformation in a monomer state. The higher the population, the faster is the fibril elongation and this dependence may be described by a single exponential function. This observation opens up a new way to understand the fibrillogenesis of bio-molecules at the monomer level. We will also discuss the influence of the environment with focus on the recently observed dual effect of crowders on the aggregation rat es of polypeptide chains.

Opis:
Purpose: Weed interference is a constraint in agricultural practice. The crop-weed interaction has been extensively described in literature, but the weed-weed interaction and their potential usage in crop production have not much been understood. In this paper, the interactions of allelochemicals of the weeds which cause troublesome in crop production and ecosystem against weeds, crops, and pathogens are described. Principal results: Weed allelochemicals are classified into many chemical classes, and the majority is consisting of phenolics acids, alkaloids, terpenes, flavonoids, long chain fatty acids, lactones, and other volatile compounds. Type of weed allelochemicals and their doses are varied among weed species. Some allelochemicals such as catechin (+/-) have been reported to be responsible for weed invasiveness. Some crops exude germination stimulants to parasitic weeds such as Striga spp. and Orobanche spp. In contrast to their negative impacts on crop production, many weeds can be exploited as promising sources to control harmful insects, fungi, bacteria, and weeds. For instance, Ageratum conyzoides is a destructive weed in crop production, but it exerted excellent insecticidal, antifungal, and herbicidal capacity and promoted citrus productivity in A. conyzoides intercropped citrus orchards. Major conclusions: In general, weeds compete with crops by chemical pathway by releasing plant growth inhibitors to reduce crop growth. Weed allelochemicals may be successfully exploited for pest and weed controls in an integrated sustainable crop production. Some weed allelochemicals are potent for development of natural pesticides.
