Opis:
To determine the volume of felled trees, dendrometric formulas are used that are the product of a specific cross-section and the length of a dendrometric solid. In order to apply these formulas on a larger scale, it is essential to know their accuracy. Most of the research on the accuracy of dendrometric formulas has been carried out using Scots pine with other tree species, including European larch Larix decidua Mill., often being overlooked. The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of eight common dendrometric formulas for stems of European larch without bark. The research material consisted of 290 larch stems from two forest districts (Pińczów and Prudnik), representing trees from age classes II to V and older. The following formulas were observed to be highly accurate: Huber’s, French, Hossfeld’s, Gieruszynski’s and the two-halfs formula. Huber’s formula provided the mean value of percentage errors closest to zero (0.8%) and was the most accurate for- mula, whereas the two-halfs formula, showed the lowest variability of percentage errors (standard deviation 3.1%). However, all formulas tended to generate systematic errors with the merchant’s and two-halfs formulas underestimating the volume, while the others overestimated the volume. Most of the formulas ́ accuracy was uniform across the different age classes with the exception of the Smalian’s and Rieckie- -Newton’s formulas, that were significantly less accurate when applied to the V and older age classes, and the merchant’s formu- la, characterized by greater accuracy in the V and older age classes. Pair-wise comparisons of the formulas ́ accuracy revealed significant differences between most of the analyzed pairs of formulas though no differences were found between the French and Gieruszynski, French and Hossfeld, Gieruszynski and Hossfeld, Gieruszynski and Huber formulas as well as between the Hossfeld and Huber formulas.

Opis:
the purpose of this paper was to review literature covering the topic of site index with particular emphasis on Scots pine, the most important forest-forming species in poland. we discuss the history of the site index, research on various tree species, statistical modelling methods, the spatial application of site index and age impact assessment. the history of research on the site index of forest species is long and dates back to the 18th century. Many researchers thought that determining the quality of the habitat is very important from the point of view of rational forest management. the site index, as a measure of the potential of the habitat on which the forest grows, is one of the most important characteristics of forest stands. the site index depends on the selected model, but is most often expressed as the average or top height of trees of a given species at a certain age. In our review, we point out several insufficiencies of studies on the site index, external influences and the connection of the site index with spatial conditions. Furthermore, research conducted so far has not explicitly confirmed that there is a relationship between the site index of pine stands and their geographical location in poland. More research on the site index, especially in regard with climate change, is needed.

Opis:
The article presents a comparative analysis of social preferences related to running in the forests of Poland and the Czech Republic. The preferences were determined on the basis of a questionnaire distributed in 2016 via social media among people interested in running in in both countries. The survey covered 346 people over 18 years of age in Poland and 294 people from Czech Republic. The questionnaire included questions such as: the frequency of running in the forest, the preferred season for running and average number of running kilometers in the week and the views on advantages and disadvantages of running in forest areas. The results show that there is quite a lot of differences between the preferences of respondents from both of the analyzed countries. Statistical analysis was carried out using the chi−square test. The observed differences relate mainly to the choice of season for running in forests, the frequency of running in the forests, average distance covered in a week and the views on advantages of running in forest areas. The most preferred season for running in Polish forests was summer, then spring, while in Czech ones it was exactly the opposite. Most respondents in Poland run in the forest several times a week, whereas in the Czech Republic – several times a month. The most frequently mentioned advantages of running in Polish forests were: contact with nature, clean air, landscape – pleasant environment. In Czech forests among the most frequently mentioned advantages of running were: contact with nature, good quality surface and clean air. Subsequently, the respondents pointed to the lack of traffic control infrastructure, and lack or a small number of other recreational people. Among the disadvantages of running in the forest, respondents in both counties mentioned mainly: the presence of tick and hunters. Other factors limiting the comfort of running in the forests included: uneven road surface or problems with phone connection. Only the views on the subject of the attractiveness of the forests for running and disadvantages of running in forest areas were not significantly important.

Opis:
The State Forests, National Forest Holding operates on the principle of financial independence, and the sale of wood is the primary source of income of the institution. Raw wood is sold with the bark, although the registry applies to the wood without bark. It was hypothesized that the method of bark volume reduction may have a significant impact on the registered volume. The material collected in the Płaska Forest District was used to assess the impact of method of bark volume reduction presented in the PN−D−95000:2002 standard on the volume of Scots pine logs in thinned and harvest stands growing on fresh coniferous forest habitat. Analysis of the accuracy and precision of each method were carried out on the basis of sectional measurements of 180 logs (90 per stand type). Four methods were compared: table deduction depending on the diameter of the stem (method 1), measurement of bark thickness with manual bark gauge (method 2a), mechanical removal of the bark using a spokeshave at the place of measurement (method 2b), and calculation of the log volume with Huber formula and subsequent subtraction of the bark volume determined based on special ratio (method 3). All methods caused negative systematic error, and thus have a constant tendency to underestimate the volume of Scots pine logs. At the same time, the underestimated log volume varies depending on the method used. To the greatest extent it is lowered using method 1, as it differs significantly from the other methods. Slightly smaller errors are characterized by the method 2a, for which the average error rate also differs from the other methods. The smallest errors are provided by methods 2b and 3, between which we found no significant differences. Analyses indicate that the preferred method of determining the volume inside bark is a mechanical removing of bark, measuring the diameter without bark and calculation of the volume with Huber formula. It is also noteworthy to take into account the deduction percentage of bark in the logs of large−sized wood.

Opis:
Scots pine is the most common tree species in Poland with the share in the species structure of Polish forests exceeding 58%. The most dangerous pathogen of this species is Phellinus pini (Brot.) Pilát), which causes the white pocket rot (also called red ring rot) of pine heartwood. It is estimated that as a result of the fungus’s activity, about 8% of annually harvested pine stems is damaged and worthless. As the Ph. pini damages only heartwood, it is often recognized that its occurrence has no influence on the tree’s physiology. As it is still unknown whether the presence of this fungus also does not affect the cambium responsible for the radial growth. We carried out studies in Scots pine stands located in the Radziwiłłów Forest District (central Poland). We investigated trees from 5th and 7th age classes (Biała Góra and Budy Stare forests, respectively). A total of 60 trees were sampled (30 per site). Half of them were specimens showing advanced symptoms of sickness, while the others were healthy specimens with no evidence of infection. From each tree we took one increment core and measured the tree−ring widths. Average tree−ring width was in case of healthy trees significantly higher than for sick trees. The research showed a significant, even of a dozen percent, reduction in the annual increment of infected trees in relation to healthy trees growing on the same site. Presumably, unidentified chemicals secreted to the cambium by the growing mycelium of Ph. pini may be responsible for this. It also seems that this relationship is progressing with the growing age of tree stands and is particularly visible in old stands, for example in reserves. Thus, Ph. pini could be one of the factors limiting the natural age of pine trees and accelerating their dieback. We also found that the growth of trees affected by the disease is influenced by a factor other than climatic, disturbing the natural rhythm of their radial increments. This factor is most likely the presence of mycelium of Ph. pini in the wood.

Opis:
The increasing social demand for food products collecting from the forests has beem observed currently. It should be assumed that one of the more and more important non−wood forest products in Poland is silver birch sap. Research in this area should concern not only the proper methods of its collection and yield, but also the rules of selecting forest stands and trees for its collection, as well in the context of protection of forest ecosystems, especially the quality of the obtained product and the safety of its consumption. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of air temperature on the daily volume of collected birch sap, determine the dependence of the volume of sap obtained on the selected physical parameters of the sap, as well as determine if there are changes in the values of the parameters tested as a function of time. It was not proved that the volume of the daily sap leak is related to the parameter of the refractive value, dry matter and electrolytical conductivity. It was found that the volume of the sap obtained is not significantly affected by the temperature on the day of the collection nor at the night immediately preceding the leak, while the relation between the intensity of the leak and thermal conditions several tens of hours earlier was indicated. Moreover, it was not shown that there was an optimal, determinable term in which birch sap is characterized by the most favorable parameters in terms of suitability for the production of birch syrup. It was also found that in the case of commercial birch sap harvesting on large scale, it is advisable to harvest and combine the sap from as many trees as possible. The necessity of further studies on the food and industrial usefulness of birch sap, including geographical, habitat and age variability of birch stands was underlined as well.

The questionnaire included questions such as: the frequency of running events in the forest and the factors determined the respondent participation in running event in forests. Statistical analysis of the impact of personal characteristics (gender, age, residence) and experience in running on the preferences of respondents was carried out using the chi−square test. The results of research conducted in Poland suggest that men dominated among the respondents. The majority people aged 35−44 and were urban residents. Over half of the respondents declared that they are doing athletic or recreational running for more than 4 years. Among the respondents in the Czech Republic women prevailed. The largest group included respondents in the age of 25−34, urban inhabitants. Over half of the respondents declared that they are doing running from a year to four years. Results from both countries show that forests are an attractive place for running. However people from Poland were able to point out more forest running events on national or regional level and they have taken part in these events more often. The most significant factors determining the attractiveness of running events in forest include: general atmosphere prevailing at the event and the attractiveness of the running route. The preferences significantly varied mainly in terms of gender, age and experience in running. In both countries the longer experience in running, the more respondents were able to indicate a specific sport event and claim they had participated in some sport events, and also the more often they point out ‘general atmosphere prevailing at the event’ as a factor affecting attractiveness of the forest sport events.

The results showed that the preferences varied significantly, mainly in terms of gender, age and experience in running. The age and experience of respondents have an influence on preferences regarding the frequency of running in forests. The preferences of the respondents referring to the advantages and disadvantages of running in the forests are different due to gender, age and number of years of their experience. The analysis of respondents’ preferences leads to the conclusion that for the development of running in forests, promoting the forest as a friendly running place, it is important to have appropriate recreational forest management, including, first of all, proper layout of forest road networks and their markings.

Opis:
The formation of the stand structure interacts with the processes of growth and competition. Previous observations mainly focused on the analysis of the type of tree distribution resulting from these processes. Development of spatial diversity of tree parameters is less known issue. The research was carried out in mountain Norway spruce stands with a large variety of taxation parameters located in the Beskid Żywiecki Mts. (southern Poland). The analysis of spatial auto− correlation of biometric features was carried out with the use of the mark correlation function, and the type of tree distribution was examined using the pair correlation function. In younger, less tended stands of high tree density, a stronger spatial autocorrelation of the tree biometric features was found. The strongest autocorrelation was observed for volume, weaker for the breast height diameter, while the weakest one was reported for height. The analysis indicated that density dependent competition affects the autocorrelation of biometric features more strongly than the type of tree distribution. The range of the tree perception zone determined on the basis of the autocorrelation analysis of features is greater or equal to the width of the inhibition zone determined on the basis of the point pattern type analysis.
