    In this article the author analyzes the evolution of the role of the translator in a world dominated by new technologies and the influence of these on the training of future translators. She focuses primarily on machine translation and post-editing. The purpose is illustrated by the results of experiments carried out within the framework of a program belonging to the EMT network and whose objective is to compare the steps of rewording in target language by post-editing and by a human translation exclusively. These experiments make it possible to draw some conclusions concerning the training of students integrating machine translation and post-editing.

    The purpose of the article is to present European norms aimed at improving the skills of translators working for various European Union Institutions. Although the norms have been widely discussed on the international level the author of the article feels that not all relevant information pertaining to the matter in hand may be known to the philologists worldwide. Therefore, the article provides further information on the criteria and puts special emphasis on discerning two basic aspects of improving translator's education; teaching translation competence as against developing linguistic competence.

    This article deals with the issue of the role of a translator in translating specialized texts. It is theoretically assumed that a translator of that kind of texts is merely a transferor of information and should not intervene with the meaning of the given text. Numerous studies show, however, that a translator of specialized texts – subject to the nature of the given text – must employ a whole range of translation techniques which aim at explicating certain concealed or unknown messages being conveyed to the receiving party. In this article we strive to prove that these explanatory techniques can take on a totally different dimension when applied to scientific or pragmatic texts. Therefore it can be inferred that translating scientific texts provides for different interventions on the part of the translator than in the case of translating utilitarian texts. Nevertheless, each such intervention is to some extent creative from the point of view of the role of the translator in the process of the transfer.

    The article describes the connection between the science of translation and contrastive textology. The foucs is on the texts of a strictly determined fixed structure, such as: instructions of use, bank or medical leaflets, recipes, job advertisements, legislative texts (a company establishment agreement, a leasing agreement, etc.), which translators may be exposed to in their professional careers. The article tries to outline these texts’ models, which tend to function parallelly in different societies as a basis for their correct translation.

    This article focusses on the search for a solution to problems of translation of texts of a verbal-visual character. Despite appearance various images occurring in these texts are not automatically understood by a foreign recipient since they undergo a certain codification, characteristic of every culture individually. In the meantime the sense of these verbal-visual tramsmissions is a result of various relations into which enter with each other both semiotic elements (parallel, supplementing and interpretative meaning, equivalence and contradiction). The author tries to answer the question about the way in which the translator of this type of texts may render their sense and transmit information contained in them for the use of a foreign recipient.

    Opis:
    In this paper the author demonstrates the limits of audio description in the transfer of the humorous effects of a film comedy which constitute the “semantic dominant” of this kind of production. The analysis is illustrated by examples from Philippe de Chauveron’s film, À bras ouverts (2017). In this form of intersemiotic translation, the lack of certain visual data can block the possibility of understanding the comic by blind or visually impaired people. The author tries to propose some solutions to this problem in the form of creative audio description.

    Względność pojęcia ekwiwalencji na przykładzie tłumaczenia tytułów prasowych w wersji elektronicznej Pojęcie ekwiwalencji jest ogólnie rozumiane jako oddanie w języku docelowym sensu tekstu wyrażonego w języku wyjściowym. Tłumaczenie tekstów prasowych zmusza jednak tłumacza do wzięcia pod uwagę dodatkowego parametru, a mianowicie odniesienia oryginału i jego tłumaczenia do szeroko pojętego kontekstu wypowiadania. W tym wypadku poszukiwanie ekwiwalentów nie opiera się na odpowiedniości słownictwa czy wyrażeń, a bardziej na porównaniu tych różnych kontekstów kulturowych. W niniejszym artykule omawiane są granice między ekwiwalencją a adaptacją na przykładzie tytułów prasy francuskiej i ich tłumaczeń dostępnych na platformie VoxEurop. Relativité de la notion d’équivalence sur l’exemple de la traduction des titres de presse en ligne La notion d’équivalence est communément comprise comme la reproduction dans la langue cible d’un sens exprimé dans la langue de départ. Pourtant, la traduction des textes journalistiques impose au traducteur une dimension supplémentaire importante : la référence du texte au contexte de l’énonciation. Il en résulte que dans ce type de traduction la recherche des équivalences ne s’appuie plus sur la correspondance entre les termes utilisés, mais sur les contextes énonciatifs différents de l’original et de sa traduction. Dans cet article on discute les limites entre l’équivalence et l’adaptation sur l’exemple de titres des articles en français, parus et traduits en polonais sur le site VoxEurop.
    The notion of equivalence is widely understood as conveying the meaning of a text in the original language to the target one. However, press texts translation requires the translator to consider an additional factor, which is to refer the original text and its translation to a broadly defined narrative context. In this case, the search for equivalents does not touch upon vocabulary or phrasing accuracy, but a comparison of the different cultural contexts instead. In the following article, the author discusses the boundaries between equivalence and adaptation based upon French press titles and their translations available on the VoxEurop platform.
