The article presents a concise history of Polish quarterly “Pro Typo“, patronised by ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale). The magazine was published in Warsaw in the years 1991-1992 and was devoted to print aesthetic as well as design of publications and types (both traditional and digital), and also broadly understood visual communication aspects. The former editor presents achievements of this magazine and story of its decline. The Annex contains letters of one of most eminent European graphic designers – Roman Cieślewicz.

L ’au teu r rappelle que les recherches et les études archéologiques créent des problèmes de conservation et d ’exposition des vestiges de l’architecture mis à jour. Et inversement, les trav a u x de conservation présentent parfois de nouvelles découvertes qui nous fo rcent à de nouvelles études e t à modifier notre p ro gramme de conservation. Afin d ’obtenir une solution sa tisfaisante de ces problèmes d’études et de conservation, l’au teu r propose d’accepter dès le début un programme commun de coopération par l’in stitu t de recherches et le service de conservation. L ’auteur est a rriv é à cette conclusion après son expérience des recherches faites à Wiślica, (au Moyen Age un des centres les plus importants en Petite Pologne). En 1958—60 lors des fouilles on y découvrit dans une des rues les soubassements d’une petite église romane et d ’un baptistère provisoire encore plus ancien; les sondages dans l’église collégiale gothique découvrirent une partie d’une crypte romane et son pavement historié. Nous avons trouvé que ces découvertes sont d ’une telle valeur qu ’elles doivent être accessibles au public. Mais il devint impossible de continuer les fouilles à l’in té rieu r de l’église sans ébranler ses murs. Donc on y a Installé une légère construction en acier qui en éc artan t les murs de l’église p erm e tta it de mener des fouilles sans courir aucun risque. Ensuite cette construction servit de soutènement au pavement de l’église. Le sous-sol de la collégiale est aménagé en musée où les vestiges des deux édifices romans seront exposés in situ. Les vestiges de la petite l’église et ceux du baptistè re seront exposés dans un pavillon construit dans la rue qui est fermée actuellement. Le programme des trav au x de conservation et de recherche est élargi e t il comprend ma intenant les édifices gothiques suivants: l ’église collégiale du XlVe siècle et la maison des vicaires d u XVe siècle. On prépare un nouvel aménagement moderne de l’inté rieur de l’église collégiale adapté à son architecture gothique et aux peintures murales du XVe siècle qu ’on est en tra in de mettre à jour (l’ancien aménagement de l’église ava it été d é tru it pendant la première guerre mondiale). Les études de l’architecture de la maison des vicaires forment la base des traitem en ts pour re sta u re r et conserver cet édifice. Un projet de l’arrangement du te rra in autour de l’église est prépa ré en vue de démontrer plus clairement les résultats des fouilles. Des trav au x de conservation très importants sont en tra in d ’être réalisés. L ’auteur les divise en ceux qui sont réalisés en conséquence des découvertes archéologiques et en ceux qui avaient é té considérés indispensables depuis longtemps et dont les fouilles récentes ont facilité l’exécution. L’au teu r déc rit en détail les problèmes de la conservation des vestiges découverts, c’est à dire des fondations des édifices romans, dits „témoins archéologiques” et du pavement historié de la crypte romane, execute de plâ tre hydraulique e t de mastic noir. La réalisation de cette conservation n ’est possible que grâce à la collaboration de l’institution de re c h e rches et d’études avec le service de conservation. L ’échelle considérable sur laquelle ont été entrepris ces trav a u x est liée aux célébrations du millénaire de l ’Éta t Polonais. Le but de ces trav au x consiste en ce que cet ensemble de l’a rt médiéval, un des plus intéressants en Pologne, enrichi p ar ces nouvelles découvertes, puisse servir à rapprocher l’homme contemporain de la culture e t de l’histoire d u Moyen Age. Il en r é sulte un pro jet de transformer cette petite ville en un centre touristique important.

The author presented the history and the most important project achievements of the Printing Typefaces Center (OPD), which for over a decade was a part of the Research & Development Centre for the Graphic Arts (COBRPP), celebrating its anniversary this year. The facility was managed by Roman Tomaszewski, a well-known publisher and graphic arts specialists. Dozens of typefaces were designed in OPD for page layout techniques that have forever been forgotten. Despite technological changes in printing, the OPD typographic resource is today a reservoir of lettering ready for digitization and making computer fonts.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this concise review is to both demonstrate the pros and cons in regards to personal health budgets (PHBs), as well as critically evaluate their performance and possibilities. Another purpose of this paper is to familiarize the wider public with the concept of PHBs. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The reason behind introducing PHBs and direct payments was to bring social care and long-term healthcare “closer” to the patients in order to personalize treatment and support. By “personalization” we understand the possibility of choosing services that best meet the unique and individual needs of a specific person. However, the tempting concept of PHBs carries with itself both pros and cons. This qualitative, comprehensive narrative review brings to light the current state of knowledge and different parties’ opinions on PHBs. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: A PHB is an allocation of public/private financial resources used to identify and meet the health-related needs of a specific person. Such a resolution should potentially lead to new and innovative ways of spending the available funds, outside what traditional services offer, in order to personalize healthcare, increase its effectivity, and decrease the cost/benefit ratio. However, PHB’s are not all-inclusive but cater to needs easily overlooked in the traditional healthcare system. RESEARCH RESULTS: The described PHB organization combines the best available clinical experience with the cumulated health- and care-related experience of the patients. This way both long-term and new short-term needs can be addressed and the intervention that has begun can last as long as the patient needs it. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The healthcare system faces difficult times, and PHBs may be a potential solution to at least a part of the problems. The only question is will they be implemented correctly becoming a positive driver of change or will they become the anchor that pulls down a sinking ship?

Objective. The aim of this prospective cohort study was to translate, validate and perform a cultural adaptation of the Polish version of the Swiss Spinal Stenosis Questionnaire (P-SSSQ), a disease-specific questionnaire for assessing symptom severity, physical function and satisfaction with treatment in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Materials and method. Patients were prospectively recruited at two orthopedic centres in Krakow, Poland, between January 2011 – October 2016. During the interview, each patient completed the P-SSSQ, SF-36 Health Survey, and a demographic data questionnaire. After translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and pilot testing, assessment was made of the internal consistency, test–retest reliability, construct validity, and responsiveness of the P-SSSQ subscales. Results. Finally, 171 consecutive patients were included in the study. Cronbach’s alpha and ICC values were above 0.8 for all three subscales of the P-SSSQ. The symptom severity domain was highly negatively correlated with physical functioning and bodily pain of SF-36, with Pearson correlation coefficients of -0.68 and -0.63, respectively. The physical function domain was highly negatively correlated with physical functioning (r = -0.62). The satisfaction subscale was also highly negatively correlated with the change in the symptom severity (r = −0.61) and physical function scale (r = −0.65). Conclusions. The proposed version of the P-SSSQ showed excellent measurement properties and can be considered validated for use in Polish. It is easy to understand, quick to complete, and the psychometric properties of the original version are maintained.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki pomiarów transmisji i odbicia w zakresie widmowym podczerwieni i teraherców dla papierów wyprodukowanych pod koniec XX i na początku XXI wieku. Współczesne spektrometry fourierowskie pozwalają na wiarygodne pomiary współczynnika transmisji poniżej 0,01, a więc typowego dla papieru. Badania wykazały wpływ dokonywanych w latach 90. ubiegłego wieku zmian materiałów wykorzystywanych w produkcji papieru na wygląd widma. Daje to możliwość określenia granicy wieku badanego papieru. Często taka informacja jest wystarczająca dla celów dowodowych. Kilka „nowych” pasm absorpcyjnych występujących w obszarze teraherców może maskować pasma występujące np. dla materiałów wybuchowych, co utrudnia spektroskopowe wyszukiwanie takich materiałów w opakowaniach papierowych.
The results of transmission and reflectivity measurements in the infrared and theraherz region for paper made at the end of XX century and the beginning of XXI are compared. Modern Fourier transform spectrometers allow for reliable transmission measurements below 0,01 typical for paper transmission. The changes in paper spectra due to the changes in production technology are clearly visible. These changes become worldwide in the middle of 90ties. This gives us the opportunity to establish the time limit of production time for investigated paper. Sometimes such information is valuable for evidentiary purposes. The absorption bands observed in terahertz transmission of “modern” paper may obscure the bands characteristic for dangerous chemicals like explosives making more difficult terahertz spectroscopic screening of paper packed items.
