Opis:: The paper presents aspects connected with development of a computer system for registration and fusion of multimodal images for orthodontic purposes. The idea of the system, of the multimodal image registration, lies in 3D surfaces registering, reconstructed from the sets of MRI or CT planar slices. The system enables the user to perform registration using different approaches based on localised landmarks, based on selected regions of 3D surfaces or based on automatic matching of the whole surfaces. The rigid-body transformation found during the registration is then used to transform the set of slices to generate images that can be fused. The usage of the system was illustrated and the accuracy of the registration was assessed.

Opis:: This paper describes the magnetic cooling device model designed and built at the Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals in Gliwice, which utilizes reciprocating motion of a magnetic field source and a cyclic flow of a coolant through regenerator. The regenerator made from gadolinum made it possible to obtain an adiabatic temperature change of 2.5 K at the magnetic field of 0.8 T. The magnetic field source was built using neodymium magnets according to our own technology. For the heat transfer, a liquid having the specific heat of about 4000 J/(kg K) has been applied. We have also developed and applied a special driving system enabling reciprocating motion of the magnetic field source and of the pistons in the hot and cold heat exchangers. The tests were made with this cooling model showing that it was possible to obtain, at the frequency of 0.5 Hz, the liquid temperature gradient of 4 K. The potential energy savings resulting from application of this device have been evaluated and compared with the literature data presenting a pre-industrial prototype of the magnetic refrigerator utilizing similar solutions to those applied in our cooling model.

Opis:: The paper presents the results of the experiments in using the active appearance models (AAM) to finding landmarks in the x-ray images of skull (especially of mandible). The landmark pointing is time-consuming in orthodontic analysis. It is useful to initially point the landmarks automatically, to help a physician in his or her work. Because the landmark are pointed not only by local features, but also by geometrical structure of skull, the model have to represent not only the local features (pixels in the image), but also the geometrical constraints. The one of many possible approaches is the active appearance model. The active appearance model was developed from the active shape models, and consists of the model of the shape and the model of appearance (texture). The model is active, that means the model fits to the object in the image. The main principle of the active models is to use two energies - internal energy represents limits of the models (shape, contour, texture), and the external energy represents the fitting the model to the image.

Opis:: The techniques of photogrammetric reconstruction were compared to the laser scanning in the article. The different conditions and constraints were introduced for reconstructed images, e.g. different materials, lighting condition, camera resolution, number of images in the sequence or using a-pripori calibration. The authors compare the results of surface reconstruction using software tools avaliable for photogrammetric reconstruction. The analysis is preformed for the selected objects with regard to laserscanned models or mathematical models.
Skanowanie 3D jest procesem pomiarowym realizowanym przy użyciu urządzeń optycznych z wykorzystaniem różnorodnych metod pomiarowych. Do odwzorowania głębi analizowanej sceny skanery 3D wykorzystują najczęściej techniki fotograficzne. Jednakże pojedyncza fotografia jest w tym przypadku niewystarczająca, konieczne jest wykorzystanie dodatkowych informacji, np. wiedza o położeniu laserowego prążka w obrazie albo rozkład światła strukturalnego w połączeniu z analizą kształtu metodą triangulacyjną za pomocą skalibrowanego układu pomiarowego. Ostatnio też do rekonstrukcji 3D wykorzystuje się nieskalibrowane obrazy pochodzące z różnych punktów obserwacji. Niestety przy zastosowaniu tych technik pojawia się szereg niedokładności pomiarowych przekładających się negatywnie na jakość wynikowego odwzorowania. Dodatkowo różne techniki skanowania wprowadzają odmienne ograniczenia dotyczące uwarunkowań akwizycji. Przykładowo, skanowanie laserowe w skanerach triangulacyjnych wymaga dokładnego odwozrowania odbicia zniekształconego prążka promienia laserowego, natomiast w przypadku technik fotogrametrycznych istotna jest analiza różnorodności obserwowanej tekstury obiektu. W artykule porównano fotogrametryczne techniki rekonstrukcji z technikami scanowania laserowego. Przenalizowano uwarunkowania i ograniczenia związane z akwizycją danych pomiarowych, takich jak: różnorodność wykorzystanych materiałów, warunki oświetleniowe, rozdzielczość kamery, liczba obrazów w sekwencji, wpływ kalibracji wstępnej. Autorzy dokonują porównania zrekonstruowanych powierzchni wyselekcjonowanych obiektów w odniesieniu do zrekonstruowanych obiektów wzorcowych pozyskanych metoda˛ skaningu laserowego wysokiej rozdzielczosci, bądź do wzorcowych modeli matematycznych.

Opis:: The paper presents the problems connected with 3D reconstruction of CT slices of the database of orthodontic patients, using the commercial application software. Serious errors occurred for scans taken with a tilted CT gantry and inverse table movement. A compensation of the errors is proposed and the results after the compensation are verified by comparison to laser scans for a reference object, and to the measurements performed using the dedicated software of the CT station for selected cases in the database.

Opis:: Facial feature analysis is a basis examination in everyday orthodontics practice. Traditionally it was carried out using the patients photographs and callipers. Although the devices for scanning 3D surfaces have been developed since last decade of XX century their use in supporting orthodontics diagnosis have been limited due to availability and prices. The present work examine the possibility of usage of the 3D surface scanning for orthodontics purposes using professional graphic tool RapidForm. The landmarks-based analysis of facial features and asymmetry of soft tissue is described. Possibilities of surface-based analysis are also illustrated and their limitations are discussed.
