Opis:
Occurrence of pathogens in four important forest pest insect species, Ips typographus, Ips sexdentatus, Hylobius abietis and Hylobius pinastri, from Austria, Poland and France was investigated in 2006–2008. Insects were collected from 46 sampling sites. In total 5,634 living adult beetles were dissected. Some dead adults and some very few dead larvae were inspected for fungal infection. Eight pathogen species (Ips typographus entomopoxvirus, Gregarina typographi, Mattesia sp.,Chytridiopsis typographi, Unikaryon montanum, Beauveria bassiana, Beauveria caledonica and Isaria farinosa) were found in I. typographus from the three countries. Four pathogen species were found in I. sexdentatus from Austria and France (Gregarina cf. typographi, Metschnikowia cf. typographi, B. bassiana and B. caledonica). Five pathogen species were found in H. abietis from Austria and Poland (Gregarina hylobii, Ophryocystis hylobii, Nosema hylobii, B. bassiana and B. brongniartii) and two in H. pinastri from Poland (G. hylobii and O. hylobii). Some of the pathogen species were found for the first time in one of the three countries or are reported for the first time in one of the investigated beetle species. Differences in occurrence and geographical distribution of these pathogens are discussed with regard to their respective apparent host spectrum and possible ecological requirements.

Opis:
Nonylphenol (4-NP) is a xenobiotic classified as an endocrine disrupting compound with an ability to interfere with hormonal systems of numerous organisms including humans. It is widely distributed not only in aquatic but also in terrestrial systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of cosmopolitan fungus Metarhizium (commonly persistent in soil as a facultative insect pathogen, controlling populations of arthropods in natural environment) to degrade 4-n-nonylphenol. All isolates examined in this work were identified to a species rank based on five, independent genetic markers. Among eight Metarhizium strains; six of them have been identified as M. robertsii, and two others as M. brunneum and M. lepidiotae. All investigated Metarhzium isolates were found to eliminate 4-n-NP with significant efficiency (initial xenobiotic concentration 50 mg L-1). The degradation process was very effective and at 24h of incubation 50-90% of 4-n-NP was eliminated by certain strains, while extended incubation resulted in further utilization of this compound. At the end of the experiments 64-99% of 4-n-NP was removed from the culture medium. Additionally, in all tested cultures three major metabolites were detected: 4-hydroxybenzoic acid; 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetic acid and 4-hydroxyphenylpentanoic acid. The obtained results indicate that Metarhizium sp. possesses an ability to degrade NP and can serve as a potential candidate for further biodegradation studies.

Opis:
Little is known about parasitic fungi associated with mites, but interest in them is growing because of their potential as agents for biological control of many pests and diseases vectors among these arthropods. An overview is given of studies on fungal diseases of phytophagous mites. Most of these studies concern on fungal pathogens of eriophyoids and spidermites. The most frequently encountered pathogens of mites belong to the genera Neozygites of the order Entomophthorales and Hirsutella of the hyphomycetous anamorphs. These two fungal genera differ not only taxonomically but they also have different biology and pathogenic abilities. Neozygites floridana is a common species causing epizootics in spider mite populations, while fungi from the genus Hirsutella seem to be more specific to eriophyoid mites. They are of special interest because most of their strains can be grown on artificial media and multiplicated by this means for application against pest mites. Fungus H. thompsonii commercial mycoacaricide Mycar was produced for the control of eriophyoid mites on citrus. gThe state of the knowledge about the mycoses of mites should be estimated as initial and further research is required to clarify the taxonomic anamorph - teleomorph alliances of fungal pathogens of mites especially fromthe genus Hirsutella, and to study their ecology in order to develop their efficient biotechnologiecal utilization for pest control.
