Opis:
This study detected, for the first time, the long term annual and seasonal rainfall trends over Bihar state, India, between 1901 and 2002. The shift change point was identified with the cumulative deviation test (cumulative sum – CUSUM), and linear regression. After the shift change point was detected, the time series was subdivided into two groups: before and after the change point. Arc-Map 10.3 was used to evaluate the spatial distribution of the trends. It was found that annual and monsoon rainfall trends decreased significantly; no significant trends were observed in pre-monsoon, monsoon, post-monsoon and winter rainfall. The average decline in rainfall rate was –2.17 mm·year–1 and –2.13 mm·year–1 for the annual and monsoon periods. The probable change point was 1956. The number of negative extreme events were higher in the later period (1957–2002) than the earlier period (1901–1956).
W badaniach prezentowanych w niniejszej pracy wykryto po raz pierwszy długookresowe trendy rocznych i sezonowych wartości opadów w indyjskim stanie Bihar w latach 1901–2002. Stosując kumulatywny test odchyleń (CUSUM – ang. cumulative deviation test) i regresję liniową zidentyfikowano punkt zwrotny. Następnie serie czasowe zostały podzielone na dwie grupy: przed i po punkcie zwrotnym. Do oceny przestrzennego rozkładu trendów zastosowano program Arc-Map 10.3.

Opis:
Most cold rolling mills are prone to chatter problem. Chatter marks are often observed on the strip surface in cold rolling mill leading to downgrade and rejection of rolled material. Chatter impact product quality as well as productivity of mill. In absence of online chatter detection no corrective action can be taken immediately and whole campaign gets affected. Most conventional approach for online chatter detection is by using vibration measurement of mill stands in time & frequency domain. Present work proposes two approaches to detect chatter in cold rolling mill using a statistical technique called Principal Component Analysis (PCA). In this paper two methods are used for chatter detection. First method applies PCA on Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to differentiate between chatter and non-chatter condition. Second method applies PCA on statistical parameters calculated from raw vibration data to detect chatter.

Opis:
The advent of non-thermal plasma brought a breakthrough in exploring its clinical applications in dermatology to bolster tissue generation in the domain of plasma medicine. This study aimed to investigate the effect of non-thermal plasma on the corneocyte of the skin cells, in treating superficial skin diseases via the process of corneocyte desquamation, a probable mechanism for skin cell proliferation. The postulated brick and mortar arrangement of corneocytes in the stratum corneum was modeled consisting of three corneocytes and three corneodesmosomes in a simulation domain of 40.30 × 3.00 μm2 using Maxwell 2D finite element analyzer. The corneocyte desquamation was quantified by the weakening of corneodesmosomes due to electrostatic pressure (~530 MV/m) on the corneodesmosome surface exceeding its tensile strength (~76 MPa). A mathematical model displaying a relationship between the plasma potential and the skin tensile strength is also presented in this investigation. The non-thermal plasma could emerge as a clean and dry therapy to treat superficial skin diseases. Our study propels investigating the interaction of non-thermal plasma with the wet tissue in the deeper layer (dermis) of the skin cells and also, the development of such instruments for a comprehensive skin treatment.

Opis:
This paper is concerned with the mechanical response of a single-walled carbon nanotube. Euler-Bernoulli’s beam theory and Hamilton’s principle are employed to derive the set of governing differential equations. An efficient variational method is used to determine the solution of the problem and Legendre’s polynomials are used to define basis functions. Significance of using these polynomials is their orthonormal property as these shape functions convert mass and stiffness matrices either to zero or one. The impact of various parameters such as length, temperature and elastic medium on the buckling load is observed and the results are furnished in a uniform manner. The degree of accuracy of the obtained results is verified with the available literature, hence illustrates the validity of the applied method. Current findings show the usage of nanostructures in vast range of engineering applications. It is worth mentioning that completely new results are obtained that are in validation with the existing results reported in literature.

Opis:
Three-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out with the ABAQUS/explicit finite element code to study the influence of target boundary conditions on its ballistic limit. 1mm thick 1100-H12 aluminum target of 255 mm span diameter was hit by 19 mm diameter and 50.8 mm length blunt nosed projectile. The mass of the projectile was kept as 52.5 gm. The boundary condition effects on the ballistic limit were investigated by varying the target periphery boundary condition as fully clamped and partially clamped target (75%, 50% and 25%) subjected to projectile impact. The energy absorption and ballistic limit of the target was found to be significantly affected by the boundary conditions. Some of the finite element analysis results were compared with experimental and numerical results reported in international literature and a good agreement between the two was found.

Opis:
Red rot is one of the most wide spread sugarcane diseases in the country and has been a constraint on sugarcane productivity. Pathological as well as molecular studies were used to characterize the 11 isolates of Colletotrichum falcatum Went collected from sugarcane cultivars of different sugarcane-growing regions in northwestern states of India, to assess pathogen diversity. Seven reference pathotypes of C. falcatum from the northwestern zone of India were compared with four newly collected isolates of the same pathogen. All the newly collected isolates and existing pathotypes were inoculated on a set of 14 differentials in August 2011 by the plug method. After 60 days of inoculation, the observations were recorded and the pathotypes/isolates were categorized as resistant, intermediate, and susceptible according to the virulency behavior. On the basis of pathological categorization and comparison with reference pathotypes, it was concluded that the three isolates R1001 (CoJ 64), R1002 (CoS 88230), and R1004 (CoSe 92423) are similar to the existing isolate Cf 08, except for isolate R0401 from CoS 8436 (Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh). This isolate differs from all the reference pathotypes of the northwestern zone of India indicating the existence of a new pathotype. Pathological results revealed that variety CoJ 64 is the ancestor/source of prevailing new races in nature because these three new isolates showed similarity with Cf 08, of CoJ 64. In this area, Cf 08 was widespread. The isolates were further tested for their variability with random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primers. Twenty RAPD primers were screened, out of which seven gave amplification. Out of seven amplified primers, only two primers showed the polymorphism among 11 isolates (seven reference pathotypes and four new isolates) of C. falcatum. Analysis of the genetic coefficient matrix derived from the scores of RAPD profiles showed that minimum and maximum per cent similarities among the tested C. falcatum isolates existed in the range of 11.11 to 87.5, respectively. The dendogram analysis by the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA), separated two main clusters. The first cluster comprises only two isolates (Cf 07 & Cf 08), however the second cluster comprises all the other isolates (Cf 01, Cf 02, Cf 03, Cf 09, Cf 11, R1001, R1002, R1004 and R0401), confirming high genetic diversity among the isolates. The study also indicates the possibilities of a new isolate (R0401) in Shahjahanpur, which needs further investigation at the sequence level. The investigation is in progress.
