Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM)

Opis:
Arctic shipping involves a complex combination of inter-related factors that need to be managed correctly for operations to succeed. In this paper, the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM) is used to assess the combination of human, technical, and organizational factors that constitute a shipping operation. A methodology is presented on how to apply the FRAM to a domain, with a focus on ship navigation. The method draws on ship navigators to inform the building of the model and to learn about practical variations that must be managed to effectively navigate a ship. The Exxon Valdez case is used to illustrate the model’s utility and provide some context to the information gathered by this investigation. The functional signature of the work processes of the Exxon Valdez on the night of the grounding is presented. This shows the functional dynamics of that particular ship navigation case, and serves to illustrate how the FRAM approach can provide another perspective on the safety of complex operations.

Opis:
This paper sheds light on intersections between teaching and research in the Cybercartographic Residential Schools Land Memory Atlas (RSLMA), which is the central output of the Residential Schools Land Memory Mapping Project (RSLMMP). Building on previous work in Cybercartography, the RSLMMP has further contributed to the integration of research and education and the emergence of new research and education relationships. Viewing the atlas as a project output comprised of iterative processes along multiple dimensions allows us to appreciate limitations as challenges for further iterations, including new related projects and ongoing volunteer work with students. In addition to participating in the national response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's Calls to Action, this project - including the atlas - provides a model for a unique blend of teaching and research and the basis for further and new collaborations with a variety of different partners, including Residential School survivors. As a reconciliation project, the Residential Schools Land Memory Atlas further contributes to the intercultural bridge building aims of its parent, the Lake Huron Treaty Atlas, as it forges on in new directions.

Opis:
Brontomerus mcintoshi is a new genus and species of sauropod dinosaur from the Hotel Mesa Quarry in Grand County, Utah, USA, in the upper part of the Ruby Ranch Member (Aptian–Albian) of the Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation. It is known from at least two fragmentary specimens of different sizes. The type specimen is OMNH 66430, the left ilium of a juvenile individual; tentatively referred specimens include a crushed presacral centrum, a complete and well−preserved mid−to−posterior caudal vertebra, the partial centrum of a distal caudal vertebra, a complete pneumatic anterior dorsal rib from the right side, the nearly complete left scapula of a much larger, presumably adult, individual, and two partial sternal plates. Brontomerus is diagnosed by five autapomorphies of the type specimen: preacetabular lobe 55% of total ilium length, longer than in any other sauropod; preacetabular lobe directed anterolaterally at 30 to the sagittal, but straight in dorsal view and vertically oriented; postacetabular lobe reduced to near absence; ischiadic peduncle reduced to very low bulge; ilium proportionally taller than in any other sauropod, 52% as high as long. In a phylogenetic analysis, Brontomerus was recovered as a camarasauromorph in all most parsimonious trees, but with uncertain position within that clade. The large preacetabular lobe of the ilium anchored powerful protractor and abductor muscles, but precise interpretation is impossible without functionally related elements such as femora and proximal caudal vertebrae. Brontomerus is the eighth sauropod genus named from the Early Cretaceous of North America, and more remain to be described: North American sauropod diversity did not decline catastrophically at the end of the Jurassic as often assumed. The most striking differences between Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous sauropod faunas in North America is that the former are abundant and dominated by diplodocids, whereas the latter are comparatively scarce— though still diverse—and dominated by macronarians.

Opis:
Every connected graph G with radius r(G) and independence number α(G) obeys α(G) ≥ r(G). Recently the graphs for which equality holds have been classified. Here we investigate the members of this class that are Cartesian products. We show that for non-trivial graphs G and H, α(G ☐ H) = r(G ☐ H) if and only if one factor is a complete graph on two vertices, and the other is a nontrivial complete graph. We also prove a new (polynomial computable) lower bound α(G ☐ H) ≥ 2r(G)r(H) for the independence number and we classify graphs for which equality holds.
The second part of the paper concerns independence irreducibility. It is known that every graph G decomposes into a König-Egervary subgraph (where the independence number and the matching number sum to the number of vertices) and an independence irreducible subgraph (where every non-empty independent set I has more than |I| neighbors). We examine how this decomposition relates to the Cartesian product. In particular, we show that if one of G or H is independence irreducible, then G ☐ H is independence irreducible.

Opis:
Residual stress has a great influence on the mechanical behaviour of arterial wall. Numerous research groups used the Uniform Stress Hypothesis to allow the inclusion of the effects of residual stress when computing stress distributions in the arterial wall. Nevertheless, the available methods used for this purpose are very expensive, due to their iterative nature. In this paper we present a new method for including the effects of residual stress on the computed stress distribution in the arterial wall. Methods: The new method using the Uniform Stress Hypothesis enables computing the effect of residual stress by averaging stresses across the thickness of the arterial wall. Results: Being a post-processing method for the computed stress distributions, the proposed method is computationally inexpensive and, thus, better suited for clinical applications than the previously used ones. Conclusions: The resulting stress distributions and values obtained using the proposed method based on the Uniform Stress Hypothesis are very close to the ones returned by an existing iterative method.
