Opis:
The Renaissance Pomeranian Dukes'Castle in Szczecin was built in the late 16th century in place of older buildings. At that time, the construction, and in particular the foundation of buildings on non-diagenized sediments, was more of an art than a science, since soil mechanics was being born only in the 18thand 19th centuries. However, the experience and intuition of old building masters also allowed for the construction of monumental structures that could survive hundreds or thousands of years. Their walls looked solid, so there was no fear of making further renovations and rebuilding in the following centuries. Meanwhile, in 2017, the complex of columns supporting the ceilings of the three-story rooms and the basement in the northern wing of the castle collapsed underground. It happened around 430 years after the completion of construction. The article discusses the results of various types of geotechnical tests, the purpose of which was to determine the causes of the catastrophe. Thanks to the research, a complex of underground tunnels made mostly during World War II, but also previously suspected, was discovered and largely documented. The article summarizes the actual arrangements and describes geological and historical conditions regarding the course and causes of the Castle's construction disaster in Szczecin. The knowledge resulting from these studies and analyses makes us approach with great caution any interference in the existing static system of seemingly powerful and indestructible historic buildings.

Opis:
The changing legal conditions for soil investigation are reflected in the practice of their implementation. This, in turn, affects the quality of the investigation results, andultimately the possibility of obtaininga picture of soil conditions close to reality. Under the current legal framework, three types of soil investigation reports are prepared. It is important to stage their implementation correctly. The amendment to the Construction Law in 2020 may facilitate this, provided that the role of the Geotechnical Opinionin the soiltestingprocess is increased and the proper investor's supervision over the soil investigations is ensured.

Opis:
Ecological and geochemical indicators have been widely accepted as tools with the potential for rapid risk assessment of metal contamination of bottom sediments. In this study we propose a selection of such indicators to characterize the potential ecological risks stemming from metal contamination of the bottom sediments of the Chechło reservoir (S Poland). The Chechło reservoir is located in an area formerly occupied by zinc and lead ore mining and processing industry. High amounts of metals, especially zinc (39.37–4772.00 mg/kg d.m.), cadmium (0.37–21.13 mg/kg d.m.) and lead (4.50–434.49 mg/kg d.m.) have been found in the bottom sediments. Both geochemical (CD – contamination degree) and ecological indices (mean PECQ) were indicative of bottom sediment contamination and their potential toxicity to living organisms. Most of the bottom sediment samples (71%) examined were toxic for Heterocypris incongruens, while only 9% of the samples were toxic to Sinapis alba. However, no significant correlations between the metal content and the response of the test organisms were observed. Correlation and principal component analyses (PCA) showed that silt and clay fractions were the key factors influencing the metal content in the sediments. Our study makes a contribution to building evidence of the need to integrate several indices for the assessment of environmental risks related to the presence of metals in bottom sediments rather than relying on a single one.
