Opis:
The kinetics and mechanism of dye destruction is discussed on the example of Apollofix Red (AR-28) and Reactive Black 5 (RB-5) radiolysis in dilute aqueous solution. The dose dependence of colour disappearance is linear when the reactive intermediate reacts with the colour bearing part of the molecule causing destruction of the conjugation here with nearly 100% efficiency. In this case, spectrophotometry can be used to follow-up dye decomposition. Such a linear dependence was observed when hydrated electrons or hydrogen atoms reacted with the dye. However, in the case of hydroxyl radical reactions some coloured products form with absorption spectra very similar to those of the starting dye molecules. For that reason, spectrophotometric measurements give false results about the concentration of intact dye molecules. Analysis made by the HPLC (high-pressure liquid chromatography) method reveals logarithmic time dependence in agreement with a theoretical model developed.

Opis:
The question of the eastern extent of the Variscan externides in the Polish Lowlands is a subject of ongoing scientific debate. The key to resolve this problem is to provide a good seismic image of the pre-Permian strata. Unfortunately, the industrial seismic profiling brings sparse information from below the Zechstein, thus in 2003, a special seismic experiment called GRUNDY 2003 has been organised. The acquisition system was based on the deep seismic sounding equipment and was targeted at the recognition of Palaeozoic strata. The results in form of the 3D tomographic velocity field and the migrated depth section form the basis for the geological interpretation. Deduced geological model suggests the existence of two different geological media below the Permian strata. The likely interpretation is that it is the contact zone of the Variscan externides with their foreland. Obtained results are of a great importance for the hydrocarbons exploration perspectives.

Opis:
Application of radiation processing for drinking water, wastewater, and groundwater treatment is a cost effective process which may insure adequate availability of that resource worldwide. This paper summarizes the results of a Coordinated Research Project (organized by the IAEA) with participants from 10 countries with the purpose of describing the degradation mechanism of organic impurities, and establishing optimal treatment conditions. Decoloration, disinfection, microbiological and toxicological experiments are also mentioned. These experiments led to pilot plants and also to a large scale industrial realization of radiation technology.

Opis:
In the last decade contradictory results have been published as to whether exogenous salicylic acid (SA) can increase salt stress tolerance in cultivated plants by inducing an antioxidant response. Salt stress injury in tomato was mitigated only in cases when the plant was hardened with a high concentration of SA (~10-4 M), low concentrations were ineffective. An efficient accumulation of Na+ in older leaves is a well-known response to salt stress in tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Rio fuego) but it remains largely unexplored whether young and old leaves or root tissues have a distinct antioxidant status during salt stress after hardening with 10-7 M or 10-4 M SA. The determination of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity revealed that the SAinduced transient increases in these enzyme activities in young leaf and/or root tissues did not correlate with the salt tolerance of plants. Salt stress resulted in a tenfold increase in ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities of young leaves and significant increases in APX and glutathione reductase (GR) activities of the roots hardened with 10-4 M SA. Both total ascorbate (AsA) and glutathione pools reached their highest levels in leaves after 10-7 M SA pre-treatment. However, in contrast to the leaves, the total pool of AsA decreased in the roots under salt stress and thus, due to low APX activity, active oxygen species were scavenged by ascorbate non-enzymatically in these tissues. The increased GR activities in the roots after treatment with 10-4 M SA enabled plants to enhance the reduced glutathione (GSH) pool and maintain the redox status of AsA under high salinity, which led to increased salt tolerance.
