Opis:
The study was conducted to examine the effect of rural urban migration on labour supply in cocoa production. Data were collected from one hundred farmers in Ondo East Local Government area of Ondo state. Five villages were selected from which twenty respondents were randomly selected making a total of 100. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis used for analysis of data. The study revealed that people migrate for social, educational and economic reasons. Based on this, the study recommends that rural areas should be developed so as to make it more habitable for the rural people as this will discourage emigration.

Opis:
Throughout their history, species had to face environmental variations spatially and temporally. How both levels of variation interact will be of key importance in conditioning their response to major perturbations. We addressed this question by focusing on a period in Earth’s history marked by dramatic environmental and faunal changes, the Late Devonian Frasnian/Famennian boundary. From a paleogeographic point of view, this period is characterized by a cosmopolitanism of the faunas across a large ocean, the Prototethys. We considered the biotic reaction at a seldom considered scale, namely within a single subgenus of conodont, Palmatolepis (Manticolepis). Patterns of spatial and temporal differentiation were quantified using morphometrics of its platform element. The recognized cosmopolitanism of the faunas was confirmed at this scale of variation since temporal records gathered in distant areas around the Prototethys, including the seldom documented regions located nowadays in South−East Asia, displayed similar morphological trends in response to the major F/F crisis. Beyond this overall cosmopolitanism, subtle geographic structure was evidenced but was not stable through time. Geographic differentiation was maximal shortly before the F/F crisis, suggesting that despite high sea−level, tectonics leaded to complex submarine landscapes promoting differentiation. In contrast any geographic structure was swamped out after the crisis, possibly due to a global recolonization from few favorable patches.

Opis:
The quality of Amba River in Nasarawa State in the North Central Nigeria was investigated for a period of one year covering dry and rainy season. Water samples were collected from four different locations (Gandu, Wadatan-Waje, Kofan-Kaura and Unguwan-Galadima) along the river course and analyzed for Bacteriological parameter, using standard methods. The results indicated seasonal variation in coliform population with higher values at Wadatan-waje and Unguwan-galadima during rainy season. The values obtained for coliform on the average for the two seasons were beyond the maximum acceptable standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO, 2004) for drinking water. Thus, settlers along the River should be enlightened on the danger of consuming untreated water from the River. Also, measures at regulating the pollution of the River should be taken for a healthy and vibrant community.

Opis:
This study investigated those factors which influenced the adoption of Moringa olefera as water purifier by the farmers in Kaduna state. Data were collected with the aid of structured questionnaire from 30 respondents. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logit regression model. The results showed that the respondents had one form of education or the other. About 90 percent were married average household size of 10 persons per household. About 73 percent adopted Moringa oleifera water purification. Socio-economic factors influencing adoption of Moringa oleifera water purification were age, education, extension contact and membership of cooperative. The study therefore recommends that farmers should form themselves into association because such association will aid in collective soliciting for government assistance, NGOs and other funding agencies. Also, more awareness should be created by the extension agents on the importance of Moringa oleifera seed powder in rural development.

Opis:
Fieldwork in the early Late Jurassic (Oxfordian) Qigu Formation of the Junggar Basin in Northwest China (Xinjiang Autonomous Region) produced teeth and mandibular fragments of a new docodont. The new taxon has a large “pseudotalonid” on the lower molars, and by retention of crest b−g exhibits closer affinities to Simpsonodon and Krusatodon from the Middle Jurassic of Europe than to the other known Asian docodonts Tashkumyrodon, Tegotherium, and Sibirotherium. It differs from the Haldanodon–Docodon−lineage by the “pseudotalonid” and large cusps b and g. A PAUP analysis based on lower molar characters produced a single most parsimonious tree with two main clades. One clade comprises Docodon, Haldanodon, and Borealestes, and the other Dsungarodon, Simpsonodon, and Krusatodon plus the Asian tegotheriids. Analysis of the molar occlusal relationships using epoxy casts mounted on a micromanipulator revealed a four−phase chewing cycle with transverse component. The molars of the new docodont exhibit a well developed grinding function besides cutting and shearing, probably indicating an omnivorous or even herbivorous diet. A grinding and crushing function is also present in the molars of Simpsonodon, Krusatodon, and the Asian tegotheriids, whereas Borealestes, Haldanodon, and Docodon retain the plesiomorphic molar pattern with mainly piercing and cutting function.

Opis:
The current investigation is the first report of utilization of Aspergillus brasiliensis for the decolorization of melanoidin in distillery effluent. The effluent generated from alcohol distilleries is one of the most complex wastewater with a high biological oxygen demand (BOD) and other organic, inorganic, and toxic constituents. The effluent contains melanoidin, a dark brown compound, which is difficult to remediate by using conventional technologies. The disposal of spent wash in the natural environment is hazardous and can deteriorate land and water resources. The decolorization of spent wash through physical and chemical methods remains unsuitable, and the only alternative to decolorize spent wash is biological treatment. In the current study, three fungal strains were isolated from the distillery waste and screened for their ability to decolorize melanoidin. The isolate RS2 exhibited maximum decolorization of 83% and was identified as Aspergillus brasiliensis. Its optimum growth temperature was 37EC, and the maximum efficiency was recorded after 120 h of incubation. Nutritional sources were investigated for the fungi showing the maximum decolorization of melanoidin, and starch and peptone were found to be the best carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. At 1.5% starch concentration and 1.5% peptone concentration, the decolorization level attained was 87.45% and 88.74%, respectively. A. brasiliensis exhibited a high potential to decolorize melanoidin. The decolorization percentage was high, which makes this fungus a potential candidate for use at the industrial scale for the bioremediation of spent wash.

Opis:
The effects of a microbial inoculant (Thervelics®: a mixture of cells of Bacillus subtilis C-3102 and carrier materials) on rice (Oryza sativa cv. Milkyprincess) and barley (Hordeum vulgare cv. Sachiho Golden) were evaluated in four pot experiments. In the first and second experiments, the dry matter production of rice and barley increased significantly by 10–20% with the inoculation of the mixture at a rate of 107 cfu ⋅ g–1 soil compared with the non-inoculated control. In the third experiment, the growth promoting effects of the mixture, the autoclaved mixture and the carrier materials were compared. The dry mater production of rice grains was the highest in the mixture, and it was significantly higher in the three treatments than in the control, suggesting that the carrier materials may also have a plant growth promoting effect and the living cells might have an additional stimulatory effect. To confirm the efficacy of the living cells in the mixture, only B. subtilis C-3102 cells were used in the fourth experiment. In addition, to estimate the mechanisms in growth promotion by B. subtilis C-3102, three B. subtilis strains with similar or different properties in the production of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), protease and siderophore and phosphatesolubilizing ability were used as reference strains. Only B. subtilis C-3102 significantly increased the dry matter production of rice grains and the soil protease activity was consistently higher in the soil inoculated with B. subtilis C-3102 throughout the growing period. These results indicate that the microbial inoculant including live B. subtilis C-3102 may have growth promoting effects on rice and barley.
