Opis:
Free-surface flow in the vicinity of bridge piers on a fixed channel bed is a classical problem of open-channel hydraulics. This problem is usually analyzed using one-dimensional hydraulic models for steady-flow problems. The aim of this paper is to present a two-dimensional numerical simulation of water flow around obstacles, such as cylinders, which can act as a simplified model of real piers. The depth-averaged Navier-Stokes equations describing unsteady free-surface flow are solved using an explicit scheme of the finite-volume method. The numerical solution prepared for the simulations of unsteady free-surface flows was used here to analyze the case of steady flow. A numerical simulation of flow in the channel with the obstruction was performed for two different inflow discharges determining, respectively, the subcritical and supercritical flow in the cross-section of a channel constriction. In the second simulation, a hydraulic jump was observed downstream of the bridge section. The numerical results were compared with measurements. Water surface profiles were measured for both discharges in the hydraulic laboratory of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Gdansk University of Technology (GUT). Comparisons with laboratory data showed that the proposed approach constitutes a sufficiently accurate and reliable technique for predicting basic flow parameters. The method of two-dimensional modeling of flow in a river channel between bridge piers can be also integrated with the simulation of unsteady flood wave propagation, ensuring a uniform approach to the problem of flood modeling in river valleys. Moreover, a two-dimensional simulation yields detailed information about flow structure near the obstruction, which can be used to better elucidate debris transport and river bed deformation processes.

Opis:
The numerical solution of full shallow water equation (SWE) including the eddy viscosity terms is presented. In the first part of the paper the solution of the homogeneous part of SWE for discontinuous, rapidly varied flow is reported. The method presented here is based on Roe idea of numerical fluxes of mass and momentum. The numerical solution of SWE on unstructured, triangular mesh is reported and the influence of geometry approximation is examined. The imposing of the boundary condition on a triangular numerical mesh is described in detail. The consistent with finite volume method (FVM) approximation of the viscous part of SWE is presented. The procedure similar to the finite element method (FEM) is used to calculate the function derivatives inside the finite volumes. The specific difficulties of source terms numerical integration are studied and some methods to avoid these problems are presented. To integrate the bottom friction term the splitting technique is implemented. The computed results are compared to analytical solution of Saint-Venant equations, experimental data and results available in the literature. Good agreement between these results is observed.

Two numerical simulations of extreme (flash) flood propagation in an urban area are presented. The simulations are performed to recognize some specific features of flow in a built-up area. As the mathematical model of free surface unsteady water flow the shallow water equations are assumed. In order to solve the equations, a numerical scheme based on finite volume method is applied. For approximation of mass and momentum fluxes the Roe method is used. The calculations are examined against the experimental data. The measured variations of water depth at some control points of flooded area are available due to physical modelling. The experiments of model city flooding events were carried out at the hydraulic laboratory of ENEL-CESI in Milan (Italy) in a framework of EC IMPACT project. The aim of these experiments was to simulate a flood in the area where a building group representing a simplified city configuration was introduced.

Opis:
One explicit and three implicit finite volume method schemes of the Roe type are presented in the paper. The properties and applicability of these methods for modelling unsteady, rapidly varied, open channel flow are investigated. The schemes are used for numerical simulation of one-dimensional extreme flow described by de Saint-Venant equations. The computational results are compared with each other and an analytical (exact) solution to an idealized dam-break problem. The classical versions of general scheme implicit in time - fully implicit and trapezoidal scheme - are not restricted by a stability condition, like an explicit one, however they add some numerical diffusion and dispersion errors to the solution. The modification of parameter , originally proposed for a box scheme of finite difference method, has improved computational properties of the general one-step implicit scheme. This version of finite volume scheme of the Roe type implicit in time can be recommended for modelling and simulation of transient flows in storm sewers and open channel networks.

Opis:
Analizę toksykologiczną przeprowadzono w odniesieniu do czterech przedstawicieli organizmów wodnych: larwy owadów Chironomus sp., skorupiaki Daphnia magna, ryby Lebistes reticulatus oraz glony Scenedesmus quadricauda. Przeprowadzone badania toksykologiczne wykazały, że w całym badanym zakresie obciążenia osadu czynnego ładunkiem zanieczyszczeń (ChZT) nastąpiło zmniejszenie toksyczności ostrej odcieków oczyszczonych w porównaniu z mieszaniną dopływającą do reaktora. Wykluczyło to możliwość powstawania bardziej toksycznych produktów pośrednich podczas oczyszczania odcieków osadem czynnym.
Selected ecotoxicological tests were analyzed for potential use in assessing toxicity variations in landfill leachates during biological treatment in a model sequencing batch reactor (SBR). For this purpose, raw leachates, municipal sewage combined with leachates, and the effluent from the biological treatment process were made subject to acute toxicity analysis (TUa). Toxicological analyses were performed with reference to four representatives of water organisms: the insect maggot Chironomus sp., the crustacean Daphnia magna, the fish Lebistes reticulatus, and the alga Scenedesmus quadricauda. The results obtained have revealed that over the entire range of activated sludge loading with organic pollutants (COD) the acute toxicity of the treated leachate decreased as compared with the acute toxicity of the influent to the SBR. This finding excludes the possibility that more toxic intermediates may form during leachate treatment by the activated sludge process. Among the water organisms tested, the insect maggot Chironomus sp. (acute toxicity, 8.0 to 16.7) was most vulnerable to the pollutants in the sewage+leachate stream entering the SBR, and the fish Lebistes reticulatus (acute toxicity, 85.8) to the pollutants in raw leachates. The results of the study have substantiated the applicability of the ecotoxicological tests chosen to the assessment of toxicity variations in landfill leachates during biological treatment.

Opis:
In this paper, the evolution of the style of Caravaggio had been traced and, focusing on the selected images it had been proved that the methods used by that eminent painter can successfully be applied during the creation of modern, effective multimedia presentations. The strength of Caravaggio was in its simplicity and mundane. For indicated formal measures may be included, inter alia: the elimination of tonally extended second plan and replace it with a dark, uniform background. Caravaggio calmed down composition painting almost monochromatic paintings, which emphasizes the foreground, as well as the keynote message. In the paper it was emphasized that exactly the same objectives should be guided in the creation of multimedia presentations, extracted from unnecessary embellishments that irrupt to the fore dispersing attention. Based on the analysis of selected paintings, in the article, review of procedures associated with the colors of multimedia presentations, extremely important in creating multimedia presentations and highlighting media had been proposed. Several theories related to the psychology of color had been also presented, and also sought to answer the question of why we should not trust psychologists boundlessly.
Caravaggio „uspokoił” kompozycję, malując niemal monochromatyczne obrazy uwypuklające plan pierwszy, przekaz i myśl przewodnią.

A method for the detection of segregating major genes based on the analysis of estimated marginal posterior major gene variance density was examined. The properties of the method were investigated using data sets simulated for a real population of laying hens consisting of eleven generations. Marginal posterior densities of model parameters were estimated by the Gibbs sampling approach proposed by Janss et al. (1995). With the data of about 4000 observations it was possible to detect a major gene responsible for one third of the genetic variance and one tenth of the phenotypic variance, irrespectively of the degree of dominance at the major locus. The inference based on the posterior marginal major gene variance can be sensitive to skewness of the data. It was shown that skewness of 0.2 can lead to a false detection of a major gene. The method is robust against a non-genetic mixture of normal distributions.

Generally good agreement between measured and calculated results was observed. Moreover, the calculations are compared to experimental data available due to physical modelling. As the similarity between physical phenomena of flow within water slide and in the river valley after dam-break event is observed, the investigation was realized within the framework of the State Committee for Scientific Research 6P06S04121 project.
