It is demonstrated that free-carrier plasmons being well defined collective excitations of the electron gas in the range of small wave vectors can serve as a sensitive tool to investigate the optical processes related to the small momentum transfers. As an example the system HgSe:Fe is analysed both experimentally and theoretically.

Reflectivity spectra of HgSe crystals highly doped with Ga and Fe, respectively, were investigated in the spectral region close to the absorption edge at temperatures between 12 K and 295 K. From the analysis of the structure observed in reflectivity the temperature dependence of the Fermi energy was determined for both kinds of crystals.

The reflectivity spectra of Hg$\text{}_{1-x}$Co$\text{}_{x}$Se (x = 0.0, 0.024, 0.031) crystals were measured in the vacuum ultraviolet photon energy range from 4 to 12 eV to find the influence of Co ions on the valence band electronic structure of the HgSe crystal. The structure of the reflectivity spectra was interpreted in terms of the electronic band structure of the binary material (HgSe) assuming direct allowed interband transitions.

Reflectivity spectra of Hg$\text{}_{1-x}$Fe$\text{}_{x}$S (x < 0.04) and HgSe$\text{}_{1-y}$S$\text{}_{y}$ (y < 0.5) mixed crystals were measured in the vacuum ultraviolet energy range from 4 to 12 eV. Information about the electronic band structure of cubic modification of HgS resulting from the above data is analyzed and discussed.

Opis:
Resonant photoemission spectra of cubic Ηg$\text{}_{0.94}$Fe$\text{}_{0.06}$S were measured for photon energies near to the energy of intra atomic Fe 3p$\text{}^{6}$3d$\text{}^{6}$ → 3p$\text{}^{5}$3d$\text{}^{7}$ transition. The difference between the spectra taken at resonance and antiresonance is presented as a measure of the energy distribution of Fe 3d derived states. The results obtained show that Fe 3d states contribute to the whole valence band with a distinct structure appearing at the band edge.

Raman scattering measurements on (MnTe)$\text{}_{8}$/(Cd$\text{}_{0.64}$Zn$\text{}_{0.36}$Te)$\text{}_{8}$ multilayer grown by MBE method and on various (MnTe)$\text{}_{n}$/(CdTe)$\text{}_{12}$ multilayers (where n=8,12,16,24) were performed at low temperatures. In the z̅(x,x)z polarization, structures corresponding to folded acoustic phonons were found. In z̅(x,y)z polarization new complex structures were observed in the low-frequency part of Raman scattering spectra. A possible magnetic origin of these structures is discussed.

Basing on the electronic analogue modules in adding and subtracting branches of pulses, a modernized two-detector Doppler spectrometer has been constructed using only one multichannel analyser. Doppler spectra for Al, Ni, Ag have been measured. ACARFIT computer program was used to compare the Doppler and angular correlation of annihilation radiation results.

Absorption of positron annihilation quanta in Ga and Bi$\text{}_{40}$Sn$\text{}_{60}$ alloy in the solid and the liquid phase was investigated. It was found that the mechanism of absorption of annihilation quanta changes on passing from the solid to the liquid state. Results of measurements for Ga and Bi$\text{}_{40}$Sn$\text{}_{60}$ alloy show that for metals changing their density at the melting point the photopeak profiles are modified: their centers of gravity in liquid phase are displaced with respect to those in the solid phase and the number of counts under the photopeak changes, too.

The measurements of cold rolled nickel alloys with 1 at.% of Ge, Zn, In, Zr, Pb and additionally Ti and Sb by positron lifetime and Doppler broadening techniques have been done. Monovacancies were a dominating type of defects in the alloys. The authors of the present paper connect the differences between the annihilation parameters of the investigated samples with the existence of the vacancy-impurity atom pairs. A direct proportionality between the vacancy lifetime and the product of vacancy-impurity binding energy and atomic radius of impurity atom has been found.

Opis:
The Brillouin light scattering was used to investigate elastic properties of the zinc blende, MBE-grown MnTe layer that was deposited on a (001) GaAs substrate covered by CdTe buffer layer. The three elastic constants of the zinc blende MnTe, namely c$\text{}_{11}$, c$\text{}_{12}$, and c$\text{}_{44}$, were directly determined for the first time from the frequency of the Rayleigh mode, of the pseudo-surface mode, and of the shear horizontal bulk mode traveling parallel to the layer surface. The value of c$\text{}_{11}$ was checked using the frequency of longitudinal bulk waves propagating at different angles from the normal of the layer plane. This value was also independently determined by results of the folding of acoustic phonons, observed for MnTe/CdTe superlattices by the Raman scattering. Finally, the bulk modulus given by the formula B=(c$\text{}_{11}$+2c$\text{}_{12}$)/3 was determined for zinc blende MnTe by ab initio calculations making use of the density functional theory and atomic pseudopotentials; spin polarization of MnTe was taken into account. A satisfactory agreement between theoretical and experimental values was obtained.

Angular distributions of the positron annihilation quanta were measured for polycrystalline samples deformed by uniaxial tension up to different deformation degrees. The S parameter as a function of the W parameter was determined. The data obtained for samples elongated up to different elongation degrees indicate that in the proportionality and limited proportionality regions the changes in the physical properties of samples are governed mainly by generation of vacancies and formation and kinetics of transformations of vacancy clusters occurring first of all on the grains of monocrystallites. In the region of plastic deformations the dominant defects are dislocations and vacancies and their aggregates generated due to the formation and movement of the dislocation of the primary and secondary slip. The positron annihilation data are corroborated by the results of the resistometric and tensometric measurements in the proportionality and limited proportionality regions.

Weighted difference curves have been shortly presented as a proper tool allowing to analyze in another way two-detector Doppler spectra regarding positron annihilation with admixture electrons in some nickel alloys. The analysis of low and middle momentum parts of Doppler spectra for investigated alloys reflects the annihilation of positrons with admixture electrons. There is no distinct signal of annihilations with admixture electrons from the positron lifetime data for well-annealed samples.
