Opis:
The paper presents a solution to the problem of harmonic vibrations of a plate submerged in an unbounded medium of inviscid compressible fluid. The solution is obtained, as a limiting case, by means of a solution to the problem of an infinite elliptic cylinder vibrating in the fluid. The latter problem is solved with the help of the Fourier method of separation of variables in the elliptic coordinate system. For comparison purposes, a similar problem of circular cylinder vibrating in the fluid is also investigated. From the discussion presented it follows, that the fluid compressibility is essential in estimating hydrodynamical forces, especially in calculating damping of plate vibrations for higher frequencies.

Opis:
In the paper, the generation of narrow-band random waves in a semi-infinite layer of fluid is considered. The problem is formulated in a discrete space of chosen points by means of the finite difference method. The main goal of the investigations is to construct radiation boundary conditions which enable us to replace the infinite fluid area with a finite domain. The investigations are illustrated with experimental results and numerical examples confirming efficiency of the discrete model developed in the paper.

Opis:
The paper deals with the problem of vortex motion of an incompressible perfect fluid in bounded domains. The research is confined to chosen cases of steady velocity fields within rectangular, circular and elliptic regions with rigid boundaries. The solution to the initial-value problem of the fluid flow for the assumed velocity fields is the primary object of this paper. It is demonstrated that individual particles of the fluid have their own periods of motion and thus, one should be careful in describing such problems by means of discrete methods, especially in the Lagrangian variables. The problem discussed has its origin in numerical analysis of water waves by means of the finite difference or the finite element method.

The paper presents the parameters of MIS transistors with plasma deposited thin film aluminum oxide gate insulator. Al2O3 films were synthesized by means of the low-energy, low-temperature reactive pulse plasma (RPP) method. Investigated transistors, with channel width to length (W/L) ratios of 200/10 [žm/žm] and 200/20 [žm/žm] were manufactured in a standard microelectronic technological laboratory. In order to determine the most important parameters of produced devices there were measured their electrical characteristics. The distribution of the threshold voltage values was studied on a representative set of over two hundred structures.

An analysis is given of standing water waves of finite amplitude growing in time. In the model considered, a piston-type wave maker generates the waves in a rectangular fluid domain. The frequency of the generation corresponds to water waves of lengths equal to double length of the fluid domain. In this way the case of resonance the obtained and the amplitude of the generated standing wave grew in time. The analysis has been confined to the second order approximation expressed in the material variables. Theoretical results have been compared with experimental data.

Opis:
The paper concerns the non-linear problem of description of shallow-water waves of finite amplitude. The description is based on the conservation-law formulation, which seems to be particularly convenient in constructing an approximate solution of the problem considered. The analysis is confined to the one-dimensional case of waves propagating in water of constant depth. In the model considered, vertical acceleration of the fluid is taken into account, and thus, the fundamental equations of the problem are similar to those given by Boussinesq (Abbott 1979). The equations differ from those frequently used in shallow-water hydrodynamics which are based on the assumption of hydrostatic pressure. An approximate solution of the problem is constructed by means of a perturbation scheme with the third order expansion of the equations with respect to a small parameter. It is demonstrated that the solution procedure may be successfully applied only within a certain range of the two ratios defining wave height to water depth and the depth to wave length, respectively.

Opis:
In this paper variational formulations for surface gravitational waves in inviscid incompressible fluids are investigated. The formulations are introduced with the help of the principle of virtual work. The starting point are equations of motion multiplied by a field of virtual displacements and integrated over the region occupied by the fluid. In derivations of the virtual work equation careful attention is paid to mutual relations between Eulerian and Lagrangian descriptions. The integration of the equation with respect to time leads to the expression for the Lagrangian function and then the Hamilton's principle. The case of a potential flow and spatial description provides a generalisation of the Lagrangian given by Luke (1967).

Opis:
The paper describes the problem of discrete formulation of plane fluid flows in material description. The investigation is confined to chosen cases of stationary potential and vortex motion of an incompressible inviscid fluid within circular domains with perfect boundaries. The paths of fluid particles are obtained by numerical integration of momentum equations within a discrete time space. Brownian type random disturbances are attached to the displacement field obtained by the integration. It has been shown, that the discrete formulation may lead to solutions in which a small distance between two material points may grow to a relatively large value after a finite elapse of time. The last feature of the procedure may be a serious drawback of the discrete formulation in the material variables.

Opis:
The paper describes investigations on transformation of long gravitational waves in water of variable depth with reflection of the waves from a shelf barrier. In the model considered, a long water wave arrives from an area of constant water depth to an area of constant, smaller water depth, where it reflects at a vertical wall. The analysis is confined to a finite fluid domain, relevant to experimental investigations in a laboratory flume. In theoretical analysis of the phenomenon, we follow a non-linear shallow water approximation to the problem considered. The fundamental equations of fluid motion are derived with the help of a standard variational procedure in a material system of coordinates. The equations proved to be a reasonable approximation to a description of the long waves propagating in fluid with small variation of its depth. In the discussed case of reflection of such waves from a vertical barrier, however, the motion of the fluid is more complicated and therefore the long water wave theory does not deliver as good results as in the case of pure propagation of the waves. The primary objective of this paper is thus to compare the theoretical solution proposed with data obtained in experiments, and to answer the question about accuracy and applicability of the theoretical model in the description of the problem investigated.

The influence of surface preparation and off-cut of 4H-SiC substrates on morphological and structural properties of GaN grown by low pressure metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy was studied. Substrate etching has an impact on the surface roughness of epilayers and improves its crystal quality. The GaN layers were characterized by AFM, HRXRD, RBS/channelling and Hall effect measurements. It was observed that on-axis 4H-SiC is most suitable for GaN epitaxy and that substrate etching improves the surface morphology of epilayer.

Opis:
Shallow water equations formulated in material variables are presented in this paper. In the model considered, a three-dimensional physical problem is substituted by a two-dimensional one describing a transformation of long waves in water of variable depth. The latter is obtained by means of the assumption that a vertical column of water particles remains vertical during the entire motion of the fluid. Under the assumption of small, continuous variation of the water depth, the equations for gravity waves are derived through Hamilton's principle formulated in terms of the material coordinates. This formulation ensures the conservation of mechanical energy. The approximation depends on the wave parameters as well as on the bed bathymetry. The latter may influence a solution of the model decisively; thus, one should be careful in applying the description to complicated geometries of fluid domains encountered in engineering practice.

This paper presents a new method of optoelectronic determination of cow fertility, based on a microfluidic fiber-optic capillary sensor. The current state of the art of fiber-optic capillary sensors is discussed briefly along with aspects of instrumentation and applications. Unlike classical fiber-optic sensors which are based on changes in light propagation inside the fiber in response to external conditions, optical capillary sensors rely on changes of light transmission within capillaries filled with the liquid to be analyzed. This approach opens up interesting new possibilities for the application of capillary microfluidic sensors, while raising specific issues relating to their construction, materials and technology. The investigated sensor uses light switching forced by local heating in a capillary filled with bovine vaginal fluid. The dynamically recorded data were processed in an artificial neural network. We were able to observe changes in the cow's fertility cycle allowing us to identify when an individual cow was in the middle part of standing estrus which is most situated for insemination.

This paper deals with the problem of the scattering of surface water waves by underwater obstacles. The main goal of the investigations is to estimate the efficiency of such structures in protecting sea shelf zones from open sea waves. A useful measure of the protection is the ratio of the square of the amplitude of the transmitted wave to the square of the amplitude of the arriving wave. The problem is formulated in terms of the finite difference method. It is shown that the discrete approach to the problem leads to eigenvalue problems for two matrices resulting from the discrete description. As compared to analytical formulation, the discrete method may be convenient in application to unsteady problems and obstacles of complicated geometry.
