The aim of the paper is to conduct a contrastive analysis of the connotations of the lexeme HONEY in phraseological units from selected European languages. The units were excerpted from various lexicographic works. The cultural significance of honey is discussed briefly to shed light on its function in the Mediterranean cultures. The connotation of the name are divided into three categories: I – based on objective features, II – resulting from objective characteristics, mostly sweetness, III – further associations. The phraseological units are analyzed within the framework of this division, so that it could be determined which connotations are employed in particular languages.

Opis:
The focal issue of the present paper is the conventional periphrasis as an object of contrastive research. Such expressions may have different cross-linguistic equivalents, including full, partial, parallel and zero counterparts. The present paper aims to discuss Polish periphrastic expressions and their Croatian equivalents in order to determine and analyze the relations between the units in question. The Polish units (165) are lexicographically attested, while their Croatian counterparts have been determined on the basis of dictionaries, corpora and interviews with native speakers of the Croatian language. The conventional periphrasis have not been researched from this perspective and the results may be useful for Polish-Croatian lexicography. The study shows that zero equivalents constitute the biggest group (91), followed by full equivalents (61) with significantly less numerous groups of partial and parallel counterparts (respectively: 5 and 8).

Opis:
The food terms typical of a given culture constitute an important group of culturally determined lexis. Many of them belong to lacunary units, i.e. they zero equivalents, which means that they do not have counterparts in the target language. They manifest cultural significance and have bog connotative potential. The aim of the paper is to analyse their specifics in a contrastive perspective. The analysis will be conducted on the example of Polish and Georgian names. The equivalence of such expressions will be discussed at two levels: systematic and translational.
Jedną z ważnych grup leksyki zdeterminowanej kulturowo są nazwy potraw właściwe danej kulturze. Wiele z nich to jednostki lakunarne, czyli takie wyrazy i wyrażenia, które nie posiadają obcojęzycznych odpowiedników. Mają one często duże znaczenie kulturowe i są obdarzone dużym potencjałem konotacyjnym. Celem artykułu jest analiza ich specyfiki w ujęciu międzyjęzykowym na przykładzie wybranych nazw polskich i gruzińskich. Omawiane są dwa zjawiska: ekwiwalencja tych jednostek na poziomie systemowym oraz przekład nazw kulinarnych o silnym osadzeniu kulturowym.

The aim of the paper is to analyse slogans of the Żubr brand in a linguocultural perspective. The focal issues of the study are the following aspects: creating the connotative potential of the names żubr (‘bison’, the name of the animal) and Żubr (the beer brand name), using nature as a topos as well as referring to the local color of the region of Podlasie. The cultural dissonance implementation and the ritualization references are also discussed. The linguistic aspects of the analysis comprise the use of lexis and fixed expressions, both in their standard and modified forms. Moreover, the intertextuality of the slogans is analyzed. The research study shows that thanks to the development of the advertising conception, the slogans of this brand play an important role in the creation of the brand on the market and the enhancement of its position.

Winged words are combinations of lexical items which can be attributed to a given source. There are two main types of such word combinations: intercultural units, found in a number of languages, and intracultural ones, i.e. the units which are language-specific and are not present in other languages. The focal issue of the paper is the translation of intracultural winged words. Such items are bound to pose a number of problems in the process of translation. First of all, they belong to so-called phraseological lacunae; second, many of them are due to the cultural connotations which they evoke in the native users of a given source language. Therefore, there are no equivalents in the target language. Moreover, many units are not included in bilingual lexicographic works. As a consequence, the translator has to decide on a technique to deal with intracultural winged words. In order to do so, a multiaspectual analysis of a given occurrence of intracultural units has to be conducted to interpret the intratextual and extratextual factors. The analysis is necessary to determine the parametres important for choosing the most adequate technique. Selected case studies of Polish phraseological units are discussed to shed light on the complex phenomenon.

The aim of the paper is to discuss culturally determined lexical constituents of phraseological units with reference to cross-linguistic equivalents. The focal issue is to analyse the relation between the special nature of the components at issue and their target language counterparts. The notion of culturally determined lexis, i.e. culture-bound words, is explained and exemplified with lexical items from various European languages. Special attention is paid to culture-bound appellative nouns and proper nouns. The presentation of the typology of cross-linguistic equivalents is followed by case studies, i.e. the analyses of selected phraseological units and their cross-linguistic equivalents. The source language expressions chosen for the analyses are the ones which contain either non-equivalent lexical items or words which have lexical equivalents, but ones of different status, connotations etc. in the target language. The case studies show that cultural determinism of the constituents of given phraseological units does not necessarily result in their zero equivalence. However, a multiaspectual analysis proves that the culture-bound character of the unit creates asymmetry on the connotative plane.

The aim of the paper is to analyse two lexemes belonging to the most recent layer of the modern Polish lexicon, mainly the words madka and bombelek which are deeply rooted in culture, as lacunary units, i.e. non-equivalent items, from a Polish-English perspective. The analysis of lexicographic entries constitutes a starting point for the investigation of the potential approximate English equivalents of both lexemes and verifying the hypothesis concerning their lacunarity. The research on English corresponding units allows the conclusion to be drawn that the two Polish words are non-equivalent at the systematic level, since they refer to complex mental constructs, evoke cultural connotations and are judgemental.

The aim of the present paper is to compare and discuss translations of cultural references to Polish culture texts in Wisława Szymborska’s poem into four languages: English, French, German and Italian. The analysis encompasses intertextual elements from various culture texts, e.g. poems, legends, folk songs, which are explicitly given in poems. The strategies adopted in all versions are compared and evaluated with a view to determining similarities and differences as well as the factors which conditioned the choice of the strategy. Special attention is paid to lacunary connotations evoked by the references at issue.
