Opis:
Composite materials, which can have a wide range of properties, can have an important role in protecting the natural environment. Until now, the most popular fibres used in composites have been those obtained by chemical processes. Natural fibres are much less commonly used, but interest in them is growing due to the principles of eco-development, care for the environment, and their important fact that they are biodegradable. Sheep wool, due to its unique physicochemical properties, such as thermal and sound insulation and the ability to absorb and release moisture, can be used as a fibre in biodegradable composites. Biodegradable polymers are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to plastics, which have a negative impact on the environment. Although the use of biodegradable polymers is limited by their poor mechanical and thermal properties, a filler in the form of sheep wool fibres increases the mechanical properties of the composite and reduces production costs, while maintaining its biodegradability. Mixed wool is treated as a waste product which is difficult to utilize in the textile industry, but innovative applications in agriculture and medicine provide the opportunity to make use of it. As a fibre with unique physicochemical properties, wool can be used as an element of biocomposites in line with the strategies of bioeconomy and sustainable development.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different vegetable protein sources in complete finisher diets on the fattening performance of pigs, carcass quality and the nutritional value of pork. A feeding trial was performed on 72 finishing pigs divided into 3 experimental groups, which were fed complete finisher diets containing the following sources of vegetable protein: group S – genetically modified soybean meal, group P – low-tannin pea ‘Albatros’ and 00-rapeseed meal, group B - high-tannin faba bean ‘Nadwiślański’ and 00-rapeseed meal. Performance was evaluated based on daily gains and feed efficiency for the fattening period from 65 to 105 kg body weight. Defined indicators for slaughter carcasses, chemical composition and fatty acid profile of m. longissimus dorsi lumborum were assessed. Significant decrease (by 5.1%) in the average daily gain of pigs was observed in group B. Backfat thickness was also significantly higher in the carcasses of group B pigs, in comparison with group S. The intramuscular fat content of m. longissimus dorsi lumborum was significantly lower in group P than in the remaining groups. The replacement of genetically modified soybean meal with low-tannin pea ‘Albatros’ contributed to a decrease in the concentrations of saturated fatty acids (P < 0.05) and an increase in the levels of unsaturated fatty acids in the intramuscular fat of m. longissimus dorsi lumborum. A more desirable UFAs / SFAs ratio and lower total cholesterol was observed in the meat of pigs fed a diet containing mixtures of seed peas and faba bean.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to identify polymorphisms and mutations in the mitochondrial ND4 gene and to analyse the associations between the occurrence of molecular changes in mtDNA and phenotypic traits in tumours in German Shepherd dogs. Fifty samples obtained from blood and tumour tissues of German Shepherd dogs with diagnosed tumours were analysed. DNA extraction, amplification, and sequencing of the mtDNA ND4 gene, and bioinformatics, statistical, and in silico protein coding SNP analyses were performed. ND4 mutations and/or polymorphisms were noted in eleven nucleotide positions in nearly half of the examined dogs. All the changes were substitution mutations. A majority of the changes identified were homoplasmic. In one dog with osteosarcoma, blood heteroplasmy was detected. In two positions of the ND4 gene, presence of non-synonymous mutations leading to amino acid changes in the ND4 protein was reported. Analyses carried out to determine the deleterious effect of mutations indicated an almost 97 and 62% probability that a single amino acid substitution (p.G239V and p.I401T, respectively) in the protein has a negative impact on its function. The results of statistical analyses indicate a significant association between the occurrence of mutations in three loci of the ND4 gene and the location of tumours. The mutations identified may be a result of cell adaptation to the changes in the environment occurring during carcinogenesis. The high frequency of mutations in the tumours may indicate genetic instability of mtDNA, which may also play a role in carcinogenesis.
