Taking up Antoine Compagnon’s thesis, according to which Sodom and Gomorrah constitutes a privileged place to look at the whole Proustian cycle, the article focuses on the social dimension of the novel, as well as on cruelty. In this context, the image of Jews and servants, and the role of the baron de Charlus are studied in particular. For the author also discusses the vision of love, especially homosexual, to show how Proust’s approach stems from sadism and masochism.

The identification of evil with the ocularcentrism of western civilization constitutes one of the leitmotifs of French theory. In words of Martin Jay, it results in a “denigration of vision” in the twentieth-century thought. This paper analyses only one form of this campaign against the visual evil, one related to the motif of the gouged, or enucleated, eye, as it appears in some literary and visual works of the authors from outside the surrealist circle. The study contains reflections on Georges Bataille’s early writings, as well as on works by Alberto Giacometti and Man Ray, and on one passage from Michel Leiris’s Manhood. Starting from Gilles Deleuze’s conception of the affect, the article aims to analyse reflections on this phenomenon present in writings of some French authors of 20s and 30s, especially those who created the review Documents as well as the Collège de Sociologie, i.e. Georges Bataille, Michel Leiris, and Roger Caillois. Their focus on the material aspect of sensation and on the inter‐relational dimension of attraction and repulsion phenomena constitutes an interesting episode in the history of the affect before the Deleuze era.

Gilles Deleuze believed that Sacher-Masoch had a unique role to play. He recognized Sacher-Masoch as a great writer while masochism was for him a particularly important psychosocial feature of modernity – much more complex than a simple opposite of sadism. Reenacting and exposing his symbolic castration, the masochist subverts the traditional version of cultural identity since he shows that it comes from the Other and the Other gives it meaning. The essay places Deleuze reading Sacher-Masoch in the context of the literature of transgression and the twentieth-century changes in the understanding of masochism and human sexuality in general.

The article offers a study of two Proustian metaphors: “a living barometer” and “the little barometric figure”. After a brief reminder of the role of time in The Search for Lost Time, we move on to an analysis, sometimes intratextual, sometimes psychoanalytic, of the two metaphors, which places it in the context of family relationships and illness. Indeed, the barometric figure triggers a whole series of imaginary mechanisms which refer to the sensitivity and the constitutive versatility of the Search on the one hand, and to the writing itself on the other hand, but above all root this image in a complex game of identity tensions.

The article analyzes the Polish translation of the texts of the Franco-Romanian writer and philosopher Emil Cioran. The author presents different traditions that Cioran’s work follows in order to show the stylistic complexity of his oeuvre as well as that of his passage from Romanian into French. He analyzes various problems related to the translation of Cioran into Polish: fragmentation, archaisms, prophetic tone, playing with rhetoric.

The text is an attempt to re-read Roland Barthes’ autobiographical book by its translator. The author is particularly focused on the tension between the subject and the language, on the identity split and on the reflection on the writing “I”. He also presents a choice of translation problems encountered while working on Roland Barthes.

The paper discusses contemporary condition of French erotic or/and pornographic novel. As social and cultural circumstances seem to put an end to its transgressive potential, the authors of this kind of writing tried, at first, to keep abreast of other media. Nevertheless, the “trash” or “grunge” novel as well as autofictional erotic writings were not able to satisfy the critics. The novels from L’instant erotique collection, written by specialists of erotic art, change the strategy and exploit the new state of cultural relations in which the role of this sort of literature is rather to imitate or to play with erotic or pornographic tradition, creating a new model of reception: very conscious and erudite.

Constructing Subjectivity in Women’s Erotic Writing The distinction between eroticism and pornography implies judgments significant for the author’s position in the literary field. Contemporary women writers, aware of the mechanisms that manage this field, enter into a complex game with the public and, above all, against sexual stereotypes. Authors like Catherine Millet, Virginie Despentes, Catherine Breillat and Nelly Arcan opt for sexual liberty and concentrate their writing on the body that becomes the main expression of woman’s subjectivity. Nevertheless, they rest imprisoned by the stereotypes they fight against, and often favour the rhetoric of opposition, well out-of-date in comparison with queer theories. Key words: pornography, eroticism, women’s writing, stereotypes, sexual liberation.

The paper discusses some aspects of the conflict between Antonin Artaud and the surrealists, such as his personal relations with André Breton, ideological and political dissensions between them, as well as aesthetic and philosophical divergences. Breton’s and Artaud’s different attitudes towards revolution and madness disclose some crucial points in their literary works, and show up insuperable obstacles for their cooperation. Against this background, Artaud’s thought seems closer to Surrealism’s rebels and heretics, notably to Georges Bataille, rather than to Breton or Aragon with whom he worked for two years, all the same decisive period for his posterior writing. This is a report from a visit to the exhibition, Mannequin d’artiste, mannequin fétiche, presented at the Paris Musée Bourdelle in April 1-July 12 2015. In the first place, the show was intended to be a story about the mannequin in the history of artistic practices. In such a context, the mannequin turns out to have been a great enemy of two currents: first, romanticism, which in his conception of creative genius rejected the idea of representing reality, and second, all the anti mimetic tendencies in modern art in which the question of adequate representation of the body can only be a negative point of reference. That double rejection of the mannequin was compensated by its position within realism, for which it remained indispensable, and surrealism, for which the mannequin (particularly the tailor’s dummy) was a value in its own right: aesthetic, oneiric, philosophical, and erotic (see the most famous works of de Chirico and Bellmer).

The author of the paper presents a short history of the idea of plagiarism and concludes that today it should be interpreted as a unique, alternative, but still legitimate manner of writing, in which what matters most is memory – that of the author and that of the reader. Such an approach was proposed by members of the OuLiPo group (François Le Lionnais, Marcel Bénabou, and Pierre Bayard) as plagiarism by anticipation. Its features, such as obvious similarity of texts, discord between the plagiarized fragment and the rest of the work and other works from the same period, secrecy, and temporal inversion, in the era of widespread reproduction provoke to think about copies in terms of anticipation or falsification of the missing works. Will the Messiah come from that direction?

Written on the sidelines of a new translation of Sodom and Gomorrah into Polish, the article evokes the problem that the translator had in finding the equivalent of the term inverti. This problem serves as a pretext to speak, on the one hand, of homosexuality in Proust, on the other, of language as the subject of the novel. In this context, the role of Albertine and the etymological tirades of professor Brichot are studied in particular. The author also highlights the testamentary character of this part of the Proustian cycle.
