Opis:
Cervical vertebrae of azhdarchid pterosaurs were discovered in two Upper Cretaceous (Baynshire Suite) dinosaur localities, Bayshin Tsav and Burkhant, in the Gobi Desert. These are the first discoveries of pterosaur remains in the Upper Cretaceous of Mongolia. The Burkhant specimen includes a nearly complete atlas−axis complex, which has rarely been described in this clade of pterosaurs. Although all elements comprising this complex are fused together, a wing−like atlas neural arch is still discernable. The postzygapophyseal facet of the axis is long anteroposteriorly and convex dorsally, and would likely have allowed a fairly large range of dorsoventral flexion at the axis−third cervical joint unlike in other well−known ornithocheiroids such as Pteranodon and Anhanguera. Both Mongolian localities represent inland, terrestrial environments, which were apparently not typical habitats of pterosaurs, thus adding further evidence for the ubiquity of Azhdarchidae during the Late Cretaceous.

Opis:
The structure of an F-AlCoPdGe alloy was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis: space group Pa3̅ (No. 205), Pearson symbol cP1128-142.4, a = 24.4338(4) Å; R1 = 0.0526 for the observed 5106 reflections with $F_0$ > 4.0σ$(F_0)$. The F-AlCoPdGe alloy exhibited three types of pseudo-Mackay clusters (pMCs). The first shell of the Co(13)-pMC at 24d indicated a coordination polyhedron typically found in Al-Co binary approximants; the second shell was a combination of an M icosahedron and an Al icosidodecahedron, where M is a mixed site of Pd and/or Co. The first shell of the Co(14)-pMC at 4b consisted of 20 partially occupied Al positions arranged in a dodecahedral fashion; its second shell was also composed of an M icosahedron and an Al icosidodecahedron. The first shell of the Al(18)-pMC at 4a consisted of a combination of an M cube and an Al octahedron, resulting in the rhombic dodecahedral arrangement; its outer shell structure was similar to those of the other pMCs. The structure of the F-AlCoPdGe phase comprised an arrangement of these three types of pMCs together with interstitially placed Al icosahedra around the Pd/Al(1) and Pd/Al(2) sites.

Opis:
At some point during acid leaching column tests of heavy metals from municipal waste incineration ash, sudden and rapid elution of harmful elements was observed which was called the breakthrough (BT) phenomena. The mechanism was elucidated from the results of measurement of elemental and particle size distribution in the column and batch leaching tests as follows. At the first stage of experimental runs, CaCO3 was dissolved in acidic solution and pH profile along the bed is formed. Some of the minor elements of Zn and Al dissolved by acid at the upper part of the column are precipitated at bottom of the column, leading to the reduction of flow rate of the leachate solution. After leachate pH becomes low by the termination of dissolution of Ca, these deposits are dissolved and thus, the flow rate increases. Most of the trace elements behave as such, which causes the increase of harmful element concentrations in the eluate. Some drastic concentration increase of harmful elements in leachate may occur even after the long period of pseudo stable dissolution behavior in the land-fill site.

The early stages of growth and the evolution of surface microstructure of epitaxial c-axis YBa$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7-x}$ thin films were studied as a function of film thickness, growth temperature, and growth rate. The films were grown in situ on as-polished or annealed MgO(100) substrates by off-axis magnetron sputtering. Atomic force microscopy was used to observe the surface microstructure. From the results at early stages, we proposed a growth model of spirals for the films grown on as-polished substrate, i.e. spirals are formed around the surface roughness of the substrate. Growth temperature and growth rate dependence on the density of spirals support this model. That is, the density of spirals does not change according to the change of growth temperature (600-740°C) or growth rate (7-80 nm/h).

Opis:
A novel spinel-type manganese dioxide adsorbent has been developed for the selective recovery of Li+ from seawater. The adsorbent can be prepared from a lithium-rich component of spinel-type lithium dimanganese tetraoxide Li1.5Mn2O4, followed by ion exchange of Li+ by H+ with diluted hydrochloric acid. The X-ray analysis of the adsorbent suggests the adsorption-elution cycle of Li+ progresses under γ expansion-shrinking mechanism of the adsorbent. The adsorption of Li+ progresses via cation exchange, and the selective recovery of Li+ can be carried out, even when the large amount of Na+ coexists in seawater. The chromatographic selective recovery of Li+ from the artificial seawater shows that Li+ can be selectively adsorbed with remaining most of Na+ in the feed solution in the break through step, while Li+ of high purity can recover and concentrate into the elutant in the elution step.

Opis:
Ankylosaurs have spike−, plate−, and club−shaped osteoderms probably used as defensive and/or offensive weapons. Previous studies have proposed the evolution and function of small ankylosaur osteoderms, but histological variations in their defensive weapons are little known. Here, we provide comparisons of the internal structures in defensive weapons of ankylosaurs, which shed light on understanding their evolutionary history and function. Histological features of spikes, plates, and clubs are similar to those of small osteoderms in having thin compact bone, thick cancellous bone with large vascular canals, and abundant collagen fibers. A previous study demonstrated that each of the three groups of ankylosaurs (the Polacanthidae, Nodosauridae, and Ankylosauridae) have distinct arrangements of collagen fibers in small osteoderms. This study shows that spikes and clubs of ankylosaurs maintain the same characteristic features for each group despite the differences in shapes and sizes. These histological similarities suggest that various types of osteoderms in ankylosaurs retained the thin compact bone and abundant fiber structures of the small osteoderms during their evolution. Polacanthid spikes show thin compact bone, with less collagen fibers than in spikes of nodosaurids and spikes and clubs of ankylosaurids. Also, ankylosaurid plates with hollow bases are very thin in morphology and show thin compact bone. These results imply that the bone strengths of polacanthid spikes and ankylosaurid plates are lower than spikes and clubs of other ankylosaurs, indicating that they may be used more probably as display and/or thermoregulation rather than as weapons. It is thus probable that ankylosaur armor in general played more than just a defensive role.

Opis:
Purpose: We examined the reliability of measurements using a newly developed perioral muscle pressure measuring device with a lip piece in healthy adults. Methods: Subjects were 40 healthy men (25.8 years) with normal stomatognathic function. Perioral muscle pressure measuring device with a lip piece was used to measure upper lip, lower lip and tongue pressure, and a balloon-based measurement device was used to measure tongue and cheek pressure. Each measurement was taken twice with a 1-min interval between the two measurements. We determined intra-rater reliability by using the intra-class correlation coefficient as a test of relative reliability. As a test of absolute reliability, Bland–Altman analysis was used to assess systematic bias and the 95% confidence interval of the minimal detectable change was calculated. Additionally, the coefficient of variation was calculated. The Spearman–Brown formula was calculated the number of measurements needed to achieve a confidence coefficient ≥0.9. Each set of measurements was followed by a second set that were taken 1 week later. Results: All measurements showed high values of intra-class correlation coefficient. Upper lip, tongue, and cheek pressure can be determined based on a single measurement, while lower lip pressure requires averaging twice. No systematic bias was observed. The coefficients of variation of measurements were almost the same between the two devices. Conclusion: Measurements were highly reliable regardless of the type of perioral muscles. Our findings suggest that the method described in this study is useful as a quantitative chair side method for examining perioral muscle pressure.

Opis:
There is growing evidence suggesting that the magnitude of cortisol awaking response (CAR), which is characterized by a profound increase of salivary cortisol secretion after awakening, plausibly reflects the level of a chronic stress, social stress, anxiety, etc. In this study the alternation of CAR at the start and at the end of two weeks session of self-instruction for good sleep was investigated; by which we anticipated that the self-instruction for good sleep would bring-forth a positive affection for the participants, and would result in decline of cortisol awakening response (CAR). Nevertheless, as a result unexpectedly, subjects did not change their sleep and dietary habits along with the instruction, moreover the increased CAR was observed. This result implies that the suggestion of an impractical instruction would solely be taken as a stressful task for participants, even though they know that it is effective to improve their sleep. On the contrary, if one develops an instruction with practicable indication for daily life, it is highly possible to observe a positive effect of the instruction on CAR.
