    Ostrowska Ludwika was born September 5, 1851, in the palace of Maluszyn. Her father was Count Alexander Ostrowski of the house of Korab (1810–1896), her mother – Helena Countess of Morsztyns of the house of Leliwa (1815–1892). The countess was the youngest, sixth child of Alexander and Helen. The family environment exerted a significant influence on the development of Ludwika as a child, and later shaped her attitude in life. The childhood of the little countess passed in the happy atmosphere of the family home, under the watchful eye of her mother and carers, teachers and educators. In later years, as she grew older, Ludwika gradually took over the duties lady of the house and the management of a farm cottage and garden. She was also interested in social affairs, which was reflected in her commitment to charity.

    The article presents the subsequent stages of Aleksander Ostrowski’s education; it shows his successes at school, and also points at the direct link between the economic achievements of the Ostrowskis’ domain and the level of the owners’ education. The general and professional knowledge acquired at school and the level of culture and civil awareness provided resulted in the formation of high educational ambitions also in the next generation: the atmosphere of the family home and the pedagogical attitude of Aleksander and Helena Ostrowski influenced the fact that their children were also well educated; therefore, they could continue the family traditions, develop their farm, and participate in political life. The example of the Ostrowski family from Maluszyn can serve as an argument justifying the statement that a high level of education should be treated as a main factor in forming certain types of world views, social and political beliefs, and the level of interest and participation in culture. It should also be treated as a factor determining openness towards innovations and progress in both the organisation of social life and the economy.

    Temat kulinariów, uwzględniający kontekst kulturowy, jest jak najbardziej zasadny, jeśli wziąć pod uwagę znaczenie posiłków w życiu człowieka, społeczne i właśnie kulturowe uwarunkowania biesiady jako spotkania, liczne powiązania z obyczajowością, procesami kulturowej trwałości, ale i zmiany kształtowanej przez różnorodne czynniki, np. modę czy wzrost zamożności i postęp cywilizacyjny. Problematykę badawczą zawężono do prezentacji jedynie wybranych przepisów kulinarnych pochodzących z podworskiego archiwum znajdującego się w zasobie Archiwum Państwowego w Łodzi, określanego jako Archiwum Potockich i Ostrowskich z Maluszyna, skonfrontowanych z przepisami zawartymi w popularnym poradniku rozprowadzanym przez wydawnictwo Ferdynanda Hösicka. Wśród celów przyświecających niniejszej publikacji znajduje się zadanie skomentowania prezentowanych przepisów kulinarnych i niejako ich osadzenia w czasie we wspomnianym już kontekście kulturowym, m.in. choćby poprzez przykładowe porównanie z przepisami pochodzącymi z popularnych wówczas publikacji.
    The topic of cuisine, taking into account the cultural context, is absolutely justified, taking into account the importance of meals in human life, the social and cultural conditions of feasts as meetings, numerous links with customs, processes of cultural persistence, but also changes shaped by various factors, e.g. fashion or increase in wealth and civilization progress. The research issues were narrowed down to the presentation of selected recipes from the local archives in the resources of the State Archive in Lodz, referred to as the Archives of Potocki and Ostrowski from Maluszyn, confronted with the recipes contained in the popular guidebook distributed by the Ferdynand Hösick’ publishing house. In this regard, among the aims of this publication, there is the task of commenting on the presented culinary recipes and, in a way, setting them in time in the already mentioned cultural context, i.a. by exemplary comparison with the recipes from popular publications at the time.

    An analysis has been carried out of several dozen letters written between 13 August 1876 and 5 May 1890 by Roman Bniński (the father), addressed mainly to his son, Roman. The analysed letters allow us to gain some insight, no matter how minimal, into the father’s attitude towards his son, which is expected to shape his offspring. Not surprisingly, the correspondence reflects acceptance, cooperation, reasonable freedom and recognition of the child’s rights.In general, letters are a direct source presenting a family’s everyday life, relations between family members, family affinities and relations with neighbours, acquaintances and friends... This is all reflected in the letters written by Roman Bniński to his son. Like all direct written sources, the letters provide a new image of the landed gentry, which is confronted with its stereotypical images, mainly formed on the basis of Positivistic and Marxist literature.

    W tekście poddano analizie kazanie wygłoszone 11 kwietnia 1812 r. w Kościele Katedralnym Krakowskim przez ks. Wincentego Łańcuckiego, na pogrzebie Włodzimierza Potockiego. Jest ono jednym z wielu zgromadzonych w zespole zatytułowanym Archiwum Ostrowskich i Potockich z Maluszyna znajdującym się w Archiwum Państwowym w Łodzi. Kazanie Łańcuckiego wygłoszone na pogrzebie Potockiego zostało wydane w Krakowie w 1812 r., w „Drukarni Gröblowskiey”. Ks. Łańcucki był cenionym kaznodzieją. Przygotowując to kazanie, stanął wobec konieczności zmierzenia się zarówno z wzorcami staropolskimi, jak i szablonem mowy funeralnej. Autor nie zapomniał również, że przyswajał sobie najlepsze wzory antyczne i francuskie.
    The text analyses the sermon delivered on 11 April 1812 in the Cracow Cathedral Church by Wincenty Łańcucki at the funeral of Włodzimierz Potocki. This sermon is one of many gathered in an archival collection called Archive of the Potockis and the Ostrowkis from Maluszyn, located in the State Archive in Łódź. Łańcucki’s sermon which was delivered at Włodzimierz Potocki’s funeral was published in Cracow, in 1812, in Gröblowskiey Printing House. Wincenty Łańcucki was a valued preacher. While he was preparing this sermon, he needed to implement both old Polish rhetoric rules and those pertaining to writing funeral speeches. Moreover, the author did not forget to make use of the best ancient and French speech delivery traditions.

    The article presents the figure of Maria Twardowska née Skirmunt (1858-1907), researcher of the Lithuanian flora, promoter of natural science, author of articles on botany, and social activist. Twardowska was one of the first women to conduct independent research on the Polish/Lithuanian flora. She published in ‘Wszechświat’ and ‘Pamiętnik Fizjograficzny’. She kept scientific contacts with Polish botanists - Edward Janczewski, Józef Rostafiński, Władysław Dybowski, and Antoni Rehman. She is the author of the herbarium, which was in the collection of the Poznań Society of Friends of Sciences until the Second World War.

    This article has been written based on previously unpublished correspondence of the Bniński family, carried on between August 13, 1876 and May 5, 1890. The sender was Roman Bniński (the father), and the addressee was his son, also Roman. One of the letters was written to his sons Roman and Hilary. This remarkable correspondence allows to recreate daily life of the landed gentry living in Podolia. It also provides an opportunity to look into everyday matters and witness life in Vinnytsia palace. The father’s correspondence with his son enables to recreate aspects of Roman Bniński’s life, his relations with the family members, his attitude towards education, friendships and the forms of spending free time.
