Opis:
Nanoparticles (NPs) defined as particles having at least one dimension below 100 nm have been applied in the last decade in industry and medicine. Recently, there is an increased concern about the biohazard aspect of the presence of NP in consumer goods and in the environment. Silver NP (Ag NP) cause oxidative stress in mammalian cells in result of generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This results in genotoxicity and mutagenicity, disturbed mitochondrial respiration, slowed proliferation and cell death. Using the alkaline comet assay, we examined the effect of combined treatment with Ag NP 20 nm or 200 nm and X-rays (2 Gy) in HepG2 cells. In addition, combined treatment with X-rays and titanium dioxide NP (TiO2 NP) 21 nm was also studied. No effect of NP pre-treatment on X-ray induced initial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage levels was observed for all three NP. In contrast, Ag NP treatment preceding exposure to X-rays caused a marked decrease in the rate of single strand break rejoining. The effect was particularly strong for Ag NP 20 nm. TiO2 NP pre-treatment had no effect on DNA repair.

Opis:
Ionizing radiation induces a variety of DNA lesions, including single and double strand breaks. Large energy deposition precisely localized along the ion track that occurs in the case of heavy ion irradiation can lead to complex types of DNA double strand breaks in exposed biological material. The formation of nuclear double strand breaks triggers phosphorylation of histone H2AX, which can be microscopically visualized as foci in the γ-H2AX assay. Studies with a carbon ion beam are being carried out at the Heavy Ion Laboratory of the University of Warsaw. The γ-H2AX assay as a method of measuring the biological response of cells irradiated with $\text{}^{12}C$ ions as well as the frequency cluster size distributions obtained in the nanodosimetry experiment at HIL will be presented.

Opis:
Nystersol was examined for its efficiency in the treatment of inflammatory conditions of the vagina induced by T. vaginalis. The examinations were made with 3 strains in vitro and the treatment with the drug was instituted in 38 patients (including 8 girls) in whom clinical and laboratory examinations showed trichomonal vaginitis. The in vitro examinations reveated that Nystersol when given in high concentr ations (12.5, 5.0%) exerts a destroying action on T. vaginalis as early as after 1 hour. With these concentrations, no motile protozoa were found after 8-9 and more hours. In 38 patients treated with this drug, a tendency to disappear or total regressian of clinical symptoms could be observed already during the treatment. Nystersol was found to have a deleterious effect on the vaginal bacterial flora which promotes the T. vaginalis infection. The follow-up examinations performed 38 and 72 days after the completion of the1 therapy showed the presence of the parasite in the vaginal discharge of 14 patients, but the vaginal cleanliness as evaluated according to Jirovec, Peter and Malek was shifted towards more positive groups and subgroups. In the authors' opinion the therapeutic failure in these patients is accounted for by repeated superinfection from various sources (sexual partners, family, penetration of the parasite from the urinary tract) which could not be brought under control. No side effects of the drug were seen. The authors advocate clinical studies on the combined treatment of trichomonadosis with Nystersol and a drug with generał action.
