Opis:: By adopting the macrolevel approach of both social and linguistic analysis, I intend to explore the problem of language attitudes and language choice at the interface of society and language. The issues connected with language behaviour, i.e. attitudes and reactions of the Swiss towards English, now seem to be ripe for a more detailed study. To this end I have carried out a research that examines the use of English in Switzerland from a multilingual perspective based on a corpus of 400 interviews collected in the German speaking canton of Zurich.

Opis:: The article addresses the issue of diglossia in its original and extended definition. The main point of discussion is the validity of the ‘defining cases’ of diglossia selected by Ferguson (1959) to substantiate his concept. The four well-known pairs of languages described by Ferguson in his seminal article include the ‘Swiss pair’ of Standard German and Swiss German and their functional distribution. Following a number of critical opinions, I will show that the consistency between the definition and its Swiss illustration raises a few questions and cannot be considered tenable. Lastly, I will highlight the main differences between diglossia and bilingualism as two phenomena which in certain contexts may overlap.

Opis:: The article analyses the Swiss language policy, language planning and the partner – language model offered by the Swiss educational system. The Swiss language policy is most focused on extra-linguistic aims dealing with the changes in the social distribution of languages, and the promotion of multilingualism. Switzerland oscillates between two systems: the traditional language – partner model, and the choice of a language of wider communication (English). Much is indicative of the fact that now Switzerland is getting ready for multilingual future with English at hand.

Opis:: The article offers an account of a research on language attitudes and language practice of bilingual couples in Poland. The study adopts the-sociology-of-language approach to ascertain metalinguistic awareness among bilingual couples, and to sketch out their individual linguistic experiences. The empirical part features four Poles in partner relationships with foreigners by means of recorded in-depth interviews, to explain how they perceive their own situations and how they function in a monolingual society.
