Flood embankments have played an important role in flood protection systems for centuries. Tightness evaluation of water structures should result in determining whether floods may cause seepage incidents, consequently leading to their damage or even destruction. It is assumed that the time of water passage from the river to the protected area under steady-state conditions can be a good indicator of the embankment resistance to long-term water rise. The curve of water passage times shows the values obtained at different ordinates of the dammed water and can be regarded as a characteristic parameter of flood embankment tightness. Determination of the water passage time (Tp) additionally requires finding the trajectory along which this time is the shortest possible. However, there is no need to analyse the unsteady filtration, which requires the determination of an initial condition and the course of time-dependent boundary conditions. Engineers in practice, often use the time Tpp which elapses from the beginning of flooding to the occurrence of seepage in the protected area. The relationship between the passage time (Tp) and the seepage onset time (Tpp) was analysed on a model example. Practical use of the curve of passage times is showed on the example of the reconstruction of the left-bank Warta embankment in the area of Konin.

Cogeneration systems are mainly used in industrial power plants (combined heat and power plants), but based on the analysis carried out in this publication, that suitably adapted and selected devices will be able on board of ships. A number of arguments have been obtained for using the indicated gas engine in a vessel. The cogeneration system guarantees high overall efficiency, as shown in the example of the cogeneration unit under study, for which the value of general efficiency was above 80%. In addition, the use of natural gas as a fuel could ensure a significant reduction in the amount of toxic compounds emitted to the atmosphere, especially nitrogen oxides (2-3 times) and smog (dust with PM10) around 25 times than standard limits. The use of natural gas as a fuel guarantees similar dynamic parameters as with the use of standard fuels.

Opis:
The main objective of this study was to design a journal bearing, such that it can withstand the forces that arise in context to increasing the length of the shaft in an automotive turbocharger. The work will also provide information on how the design changes affect the overall performance of the bearing. The design changes include the thickness of the oil film, the number of grooves, the dimension of the grooves, the number of inlets and outlets, the dimension of the babbitt and mainly the length of the journal bearing. The simulation models were created using CATIA V5 and the analysis is done using ANSYS 19.2. The flow is considered to be laminar and is calculated using Reynold’s Equation. The new concept gave insight on how the design considerations affect the pressure distribution and the pressure developed. From the results, it was interpreted that the new design can withstand the four times the pressure while distributing the pressure over twice the original design.

The modification of the downsizing trend of internal combustion engines towards rightsizing is a new challenge for constructors. The change in the displacement volume of internal combustion engines accompanying the rightsizing idea may in fact mean a reduction or increase of the defining swept volume change factors and thus may affect the change in the operating characteristics as a result of changes in combustion process parameters - a research problem described in this publication. Incidents of changes in the displacement volume were considered along with the change of the compression space and at the change of the geometric degree of compression. The new form of the mathematical dependence describing the efficiency of the thermodynamic cycle makes it possible to evaluate the operation indicators of the internal combustion engine along with the implementation of the rightsizing idea. The work demonstrated the invariance of cycle efficiency with different forms of rightsizing.

Transport is an energy-intensive sector of the economy and it is important where energy comes from and how it is used - now and in the future. The presented research results seem to encourage further work, despite the fact that the work had the character of basic research. The results were achieved in idealized conditions by the fact that the internal combustion engine was tested in static conditions on the test bench and the fuels contained components with strictly defined parameters. These conditions are different from everyday life. However, the obtained results seem to be valuable as they lead to conclusions regarding biofuels, and these conclusions are not directly formulated and published in the literature on the subject. The general conclusion from the research carried out is that the introduction of the so-called biofuels can contribute not to the reduction of CO2 emissions, but to its faster balancing in the environment. This balancing can be achieved but at the cost of increased fuel consumption. This increase in fuel consumption would probably not occur if the "bio" components in the fuel were synthetic hydrocarbons obtained from biomass. However, proving it requires wider studies, including LCA. Data for this LCA, especially about a fuel consumption, may be coming from long term operation of vehicles.

The endogenous electric field may provide an important signal for directional cell migration during cancer metastasis but the mechanism of cell electrotaxis is poorly understood. It was postulated that microtubules play a central role in the polarization and directional migration of several types of cells. In this paper we investigated the role of microtubules in electrotaxis of rat Walker carcinosarcoma WC256 cells. We found that colchicine-stimulated disassembly of microtubules caused the formation of blebs instead of lamellipodia at the front of about 45% of cells. Most of the remaining cells contracted and became rounded or transformed into non-polar cells. Depolymerization of microtubules in both subpopulations of cells reduced the directionality of cell migration to about 50% of the control, but bleb- forming cells migrated much more efficiently than lamellipodia-forming cells. The analysis of microtubules architecture in the presence of an endogenous electric field showed that there is no relationship between the direction of migration and the polarization of microtubules. These results suggest that microtubules are not indispensable for electrotaxis of WC256 cells, however they may improve the directionality of cell migration.

Opis:
Occurrence of co-infections with various pathogens in ixodid ticks creates a risk of increased severity of tick-borne diseases in humans and animals exposed to bite of the ticks carrying multiple pathogens. Accordingly, co-infections in ticks were subject of numerous analyses, but almost exclusively with regard to Ixodes ricinus complex whereas potential tick vectors belonging to other genera were much less studied. Taking into consideration the role of Dermacentor reticulatus in the transmission of various pathogens, we carried out for the first time the comprehensive statistical analysis of co-infections occurring in this tick species. An attempt was made to determine the significance of the associations between 6 different pathogens occurring in D. reticulatus (Tick-borne encephalitis virus = TBEV, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia raoultii, Borrelia burgdorferi s. l., Babesia spp., Toxoplasma gondii), using 2 statistical methods: determination of Odds Ratios (ORs) and the Fisher’s exact test. 634 questing Dermacentor reticulatus ticks (370 females and 264 males) were collected in 2011–2013 by flagging the lower vegetation in 3 localities in the area of Łęczyńsko-Włodawskie Lakeland, situated in the Lublin region of eastern Poland. The presence of individual pathogens was detected by PCR. Ticks were infected most often with Rickettsia raoultii (43.8%), less with TBEV (8.5%), and much less with Babesia spp., Toxoplasma gondii, Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., and Anaplasma phagocytophilum (2.5%, 2.1%, 1.6% and 1.1%, respectively). The locality-dependent variability proved to be significant for TBEV (c2=11.063; P=0.004) and Toxoplasma gondii (c2=11.298; P=0.0035), but not for other pathogens. Two hundred seventy (42.6%) of the examined ticks were infected only with a single pathogen, and 54 (8.5%) showed the presence of dual co-infections, each with 2 pathogens. The most common were dual infections with participation of Rickettsia raoultii (7.41%); next, those with participation of the TBEV (5.21%), Toxoplasma gondii (1.58%), Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. (1.26%), Anaplasma phagocytophilum (0.95%), and Babesia spp. (0.63%). On the total number of 15 possible associations, in 9 cases co-infections occurred whereas in 6 cases they were not detected.
