Opis:: Israel's relations with the states of the Sub-Saharan Africa have passed the various stages since 1950. One of the most important dimension is their strategic and political aspects, associated with geopolitics. Currently in Israeli policy towards the region the most important is stopping development facilities for groups hostile to Israel. Black Africa is becoming increasingly place for Israeli showdown with Iran that supporting these organizations. Now it is even said about “second coming” of Israel in Africa.

Opis:: The paper is devoted to cultural determinants of foreign policies of contemporary states. The lack of religion in intercultural communication between West and Africa is one of the most important factor that should be taken into account when the problem of theirs relations is being considered. Mostly secularized West cannot realized the role religion plays in other parts of the world and use its power to introduce norms which are rejected by African nations and others. It could be seen in dispute over homosexuality and abortion in international institution, what is being considered in this work.

Opis:: The Catholic Church is a strong player in Africa, especially due to its social, medical, educational care and charity giving to African people. Diplomacy of the Holy See is also very concerned with African problems at an international forum. First of all the cause of this involvement is the increasing community of the Catholic faithful in Africa. The paper deals with a few aspects of Catholic commitment for the better future of this marginalized continent and tries to answer the question if the Catholic Church/the Holy See is the real power in Africa. However, there is not explicit answer because of special nature of this entity.

Opis:: The problem of ethics in international relations is as old as the hills. Moral arguments can mobilize governments and people or prevent somebody from doing something. For the pope John Paul II ethics is „the safeguard of all that is human in any system" and this definition could be useful also to the system of international relations. Answer to the question why Africa hasn't taken advantage of fifty years of independence and is staying out of mainstream of globalization and what should be done to change this situation is rather complex. However, there could be found three groups of answers from ethical point of view which eventually have much to do with each other. One can argue that the most important factor responsible for Africa's current situation is colonialism and neocolonialism, the European domination and the exportation of black slaves from continent. Therefore nowadays rich countries should enlarge their financial help for Africa as a compensation. The argument from another point of view says that the main responsibility is in African culture and tradition and the enlargement of financial help may only make things worse. Africans should take their fate into their hands. There is also the Catholic Church's standpoint, well- known thanks to the Holy See's position in international relations. This point of view combines both above-mentioned and puts emphasis on reconciliation as a starting point to all indispensable changes.

Opis:: Przegląd książek i czasopism specjalistycznych pozwala stwierdzić, że badacze dostrzegają i analizują rolę religii w międzynarodowej sferze relacji społecznych w zasadzie od czasu zakończenia konfrontacji zimnowojennej, a więc od lat 90. XX w., a zwłaszcza po zamachach Al-Kaidy z 11 września 2001 r. A zatem kluczowe dla porządku międzynarodowego wydarzenia ostatnich dekad stały się jednocześnie pretekstem do zogniskowania większej uwagi na religii. Nie wydaje się, by był to przypadek. Stosunki międzynarodowe pozostają dyscypliną, która poszukuje swojego miejsca w nauce - mając ambicje budowania globalnych wizji i teorii, musi przede wszystkim wyjść poza swój pierwotny europocentryzm, a tym samym m.in. spotkać się z religią i religijnością. W artykule autorka dostrzega konieczność podejścia interdyscyplinarnego do badania rzeczywistości międzynarodowej i wyjścia poza pozytywistyczne metody badawcze, kreśli genezę i rozwój oraz główne źródła międzynarodowej demografii religii, a także podejmuje problem włączania religii do literatury dotyczącej stosunków międzynarodowych. Wskazano, że choć coraz więcej się pisze na ten temat, badanie religii jest na początku długiej jesz-cze drogi. Autorka podkreśla, iż warto podjąć to wyzwanie, które z jednej strony zmusza badaczy do wyjścia poza ramy swojej dyscypliny, z drugiej - może istotnie wpłynąć na jej tożsamość.(abstrakt oryginalny)
An overview of books and academic journals allows one to come to the conclusion that scholars have taken note of and analysed the role of religion in international social relations more or less since the end of the Cold War, that is since the 1990s, particularly after the Al-Qaeda attacks of 11 September 2001. Events of key significance to the world order in recent decades have also become a pretext for giving more attention to religion. This is not a coincidence. International relations as a discipline is still searching for its place in science. Driven by the ambition of constructing global visions and theories, it must first of all transcend its original Eurocentrism and hence encounter religion and religiousness, among other things. The author of the article sees a need for an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the international reality as well as going beyond positivist research methods. She outlines the origins and development of international religious demographics and addresses the problem of including religion in international relations literature. She claims that although much is already being written on the subject, we are still at the beginning of the road. The challenge is worth taking up; on the one hand, it forces scholars to look beyond the boundaries of their discipline, and may significantly impact its identity on the other.(original abstract)

Opis:: Polityka zagraniczna Izraela jest grą idei i interesów. Idee wywodzą się najczęściej z etyki i tradycji religijnej Żydów i - jak podkreślają izraelscy politycy - są światowym, uniwersalnym dziedzictwem. Powołując się na nie, Izrael stara się jednocześnie usprawiedliwić swoją politykę (interesy), która m.in. na forum ONZ spotyka się z szeroką krytyką, zwłaszcza za łamanie praw człowieka. Dlatego też Izrael szczególną wagę przywiązuje do propagowania idei sprawiedliwości i solidarności, które znalazły swój wyraz m.in. w przyjętych przez ONZ Milenijnych Celach Rozwoju, w tym także do praktycznych działań mających te idee urzeczywistniać. W artykule starano się zweryfikować założenie konstruktywistycznej metody badania stosunków międzynarodowych, iż idee nie muszą być przeciwstawiane interesom - mogą być wkomponowane w nie i eksponowane jako czynnik wznioślejszy i łatwiejszy do akceptacji przez pozostałych uczestników stosunków międzynarodowych.(abstrakt oryginalny)
Israel's foreign policy is a game of ideas and interests. The ideas usually have their roots in the Jewish religious tradition and ethic, which - as Israeli politicians emphasise - constitute universal world heritage. By invoking them, Israel attempts to justify its policy (interests), which is broadly criticised in the UN, especially for human rights violations. Therefore, Israel pays particular attention to promoting the notions of justice and solidarity, which have been addressed by, among others, the UN's Millennium Development Goals; this includes practical measures to fulfil these notions. The article is an attempt to verify the principle adopted by the constructivist method of studying international relations that ideas need not collide with interests - they can be incorporated in interests and emphasised as a 'more noble' factor, easier to accept by the other participants in international relations.(original abstract)
