In this paper, the results of numerical studies on vibration control of a geometrically nonlinear column with additional mass and spring elements are presented. The external load is induced by axially applied force P with constant line of action. The additional mass element and the spring are placed on different members of the system. The boundary problem has been formulated on the basis of the Hamilton’s principle. Due to the geometrical nonlinearity of the investigated system, the solution of the problem was performed by means of the small parameter method. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of the piezoelectric force on the vibration, divergence instability and critical loading.

The results of numerical simulations presented in this paper are concerned with instability of a three member slender system subjected to Euler load. The investigated column is built up as a flat frame composed of three rods. In the internal one, the defect is present in form of a crack. The boundary problem has been formulated on the basis of a static criterion of instability. The boundary conditions associated with different types of supports are obtained by proper selection of parameters of the generalized load. On the basis of these results, the magnitude of bifurcation load can be determined.

In this paper the results of numerical studies on natural vibration frequency and stability of a slender supporting system loaded by external force directed towards a positive pole are presented. In the investigated structure the failure in the form of crack is present. The boundary problem is formulated on the basis of the principle of minimum action – Hamilton’s principle. The results in the non-dimensional form are plotted as the characteristic curves in the external load – natural vibration frequency plane as well as the maximum loading capacity is discussed.

In this paper the results of studies on stability of the geometrically non-linear column (slender system) composed of two rods have been presented. The supporting structure has a defect in the form of cracks which are present in each of rods. The cracks are simulated by means of rotational springs. On the basis of the total potential energy principle, the boundary problem is being formulated. The results show an influence of the crack size on the stability of the column in particular on bifurcation load magnitude.

In this paper, the results of numerical studies on optimization of a geometrically nonlinear column with an internal crack by means of genetic algorithms are presented. The system is loaded by an axially applied external force P with a constant line of action. The presented problem is formulated on the basis of the principle of stationary total potential energy. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate an influence upon the localization of the crack and flexural rigidity ratio on critical loading of the system and to find an optimum localization of the crack in order to achieve high loading capacity. In order to calculate optimum values of these parameters the genetic algorithms are implemented into computer program. The artificial method of solution of the problem has been used due to the strongly nonlinear nature of the investigated problem.

In this paper the single-rod cantilever column subjected to compressive Euler's load is investigated. The boundary problem has been formulated on the basis of Hamilton's principle and Timoshenko's theory. Numerical simulations of characteristic curves have been plotted on the plane external load-vibration frequency for different magnitudes of slenderness factor of the system. The results of numerical calculations of Timoshenko's beam are compared to the ones obtained from mathematical Bernoulli-Euler's model. The comparison of the results of characteristic curves calculated by means of Timoshenko's theory and Bernoulli-Euler's model are done for first three vibration frequencies.

In this study the fixed-fixed column subjected to axial Euler’s load has been investigated. The load is placed between the fixed ends of the structure and its location can be changed along column’s length. The boundary problem of free vibrations of the mentioned system has been formulated on the basis of Bernoulli – Euler theory and taking into account non-linear axial deformation relationship. Due to non-linear expressions the solution of the problem was done with small parameter method. In the paper the change of the first vibration frequency in relation to location and magnitude of the loading force was obtained. The relationship between natural vibration frequency and the amplitude is also discussed.

In this paper we describe the numerical model of a semiconductor disk laser, developed and implemented in the Photonics Group, Institute of Physics, Lodz University of Technology, Poland. It consists of four strongly interrelated components for: carrier transport, heat flow, material gain and optical phenomena calculations. Combination of these components gives the steady-state self-consistent model which enables a simulation of various aspects of a semiconductor disk laser operation. A numerical analysis of carrier and power losses within the active region of 1.3-μm GaInNAs/GaAs semiconductor disk laser has been carried out using this model.

The paper is devoted to a numerical analysis of an influence of a pumping beam diameter on output power of optically pumped vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers. Simulations have been carried out for a structure with a GaInNAs/GaAs active region operating at 1.32 μm. Various assembly configurations have been considered. Results obtained show that laser power scaling is strongly affected by thermal properties of the device.

A key problem to be solved during designing productive diode lasers and their lasing arrays is their proper thermal management enabling efficient high-power operation. Strictly speaking, the above demand leads to optimization of their structures to enhance lasing performance for high operation currents. It is well-known that deterioration of laser performance is mostly induced by excessive temperature increases within their volumes. In diode-laser arrays, additionally thermal crosstalk between array emitters should be taken into account. In the present paper, physics of heat-flux generation within the laser-diode volume and its extraction from it is analysed and described with the aid of our self-consistent simulation procedure. Then their thermal optimization is discussed including a proper design of a heat-flux generation within the laser volume, enhancement of its transport towards a laser heat-sink and, additionally in laser arrays, reduction of a thermal crosstalk between individual array emitters. The analysis is carried out using modern nitride edge-emitting ridge-waveguide lasers and their one-dimensional arrays as well as arsenide semiconductor disk lasers as typical examples of modern diode-laser designs. Physical processes responsible for heat-flux generation within these devices and heat-flux extraction from their volumes are analysed and an impact of some construction details on these processes is explained.

This paper presents the results of a numerical analysis of nitride-based edge-emitting lasers with an InGaN/GaN active region designed for continuous wave room temperature emission of green and blue light. The main goal was to investigate whether the indium thin oxide (ITO) layer can serve as an effective optical confinement improving operation of these devices. Simulations were performed with the aid of a self-consistent thermal-electrical-optical model. Results obtained for green- and blue-emitting lasers were compared. The ITO layer in the p-type cladding was found to effectively help confine the laser mode in the active regions of the devices and to decrease the threshold current density.
