    The subjects of the article are to discover the origin and meaning of PSl. suffix *-ak- and determiners *vьχakъ and *edinakъ/*edьnakъ formed with that suffix as well as to establish evolutionary paths and motivation senses as a result of which function meanings of derivatives of the determiners in question have been specified in Slavic languages. The description of their origin and development plays an important role both in determining the etymology of such words as Czech však and jednak, and in examining theoretical issues on depronominal function words. The article offers some methodological solutions for examining the history of contemporary metatextual and metapredicative expressions. The study of the origin of the linguistic phenomena connected with the semantic development of the object level of language into the metatextual level requires not only considering the characteristics of these expressions at the relevant lexical level, but also in interaction with morphological and syntactic levels, and perhaps the phonological level as well (cf. questions of apocope and phonological changes related to the transition of given expressions to the class of enclitics). Etymological research, in special cases, should be supported by both the analysis of language systems lower than the examined one (which is in fact the basis of the contemporary etymological observations) as well as an analysis of language systems higher than the examined one, which is a special procedure in etymological description of conjunctions, particles, metapredicative operators etc. Further syntactic and textual analysis in etymological research can shed different light on the etymology of metatextual phenomena.

    Opis:
    The article attempts to present a synthetic and confrontational outline of views on the language theory of Humboldt, Baudouin, and Saussure. The author indicates the relationship between their ideas, as well as traces the most important relations between the scholars. Finally, a hypothesis is formulated explaining the relationships between their doctrines. The conceptions of the language of Humboldt, Baudouin, and Saussure correspond to the Kant's hypothesis that the objects of experience are the product of the mind, which should be considered as one of the forms of idealism.
    Celem artykułu jest próba syntetycznego i konfrontacyjnego nakreślenia poglądów odnoszących się do teorii języka Humboldta, Baudouina i Saussure’a. Autor wskazuje na zależności między tymi koncepcjami, a także śledzi najważniejsze związki między uczonymi. Ostatecznie formułuje hipotezę wyjaśniającą relacje pomiędzy doktrynami. Koncepcje języka Humboldta, Baudouina i Saussure'a nawiązują do hipotezy Kanta głoszącej, że przedmioty doświadczenia stanowią wytwór umysłu, co trzeba uznać za jedną z postaci idealizmu.

    Przedmiotem artykułu jest próba uogólnionej charakterystyki funkcjonalnej polskich żeby-zdań oraz odpowiedź na pytanie o ich motywację semantyczną. W szczególny sposób podejmuje on refleksję nad relacją między znaczeniem etymologicznym operatora żeby i sensów z niego derywowanych a znaczeniami utrwalonymi we współczesnych przykładach zdań rozpoczynających się od zgramatykalizowanego wyrażenia żeby.
    This paper aims at generalized functional characteristic of the so-called żeby-phrases and an answer to the question of their semantic motivation. It discusses the relation between the etymological meaning of the operator żeby, its functional and semantic reflexes, and the present-day grammaticalized uses in the sentences starting with the expression żeby.

    This paper discusses the notion of quantity and related notions from the perspective of their lexicalisation in the area of the so-called (functional, auxiliary) grammatical expressions. Such units, founded on the notion of quantity, create a microsystem composed of the following semantic and functional classes: interrogative pronouns, relators, prepositions, metapredicative operators (of gradation, limitation, approximation), conjunctions, particles, metatextual commentaries, and modifi er of declarativity. The semantic relationships between these units are similar to the ones noticeable between expressions from the relevant level of language; apart from that, they form pairs based on such relationships with units from outside the examined lexical and conceptual field. The paper also discusses the variant groups among the analysed expressions and units that are formally similar yet functionally different.

    We live in the times when we have accustomed to the security and stability of the social system. The COVID-19 pandemic reminded us, Poles, that we have to care for our security all the time, and not only military or conomic, but also health security. The first step towards improvement of the current situation is to carry out regular examinations of society’s health security. An example of good practice as regards monitoring the health situation are the reports described in this study, which are published all over the world. They present the aspects that have to be taken into account when creating such tabulations and what instruments should be used. Proper monitoring is a key to adopting adequate remedies in order to improve Poland’s health security.

    Opis:
    History of etymological thought shows two different concepts of etymology. The first one links one word with another, as well as a of group of sounds, with 'meanings' attributed to them in order to explain deep and covert sense of the word in question. This approach is typical of ancient philologists and philosophers such as Yāska and Plato. The second approach, so-called modern etymology, studies historical relation between language forms and senses, as well as historical derivational models in the wide sense of the term 'derivation'. Achronic etymologizing is to be strictly distinguished from diachronic etymology. This article addresses the questions of what modern linguistic method and conceptions in etymological researches could adopt from functional-explanatory etymologizing, and how modern scholarships should understand ancient 'etymologies'.

    Opis:
    The two parts of the article analyse the possibilities of a functional interpretation, in terms of the theme-rheme devision, of ancient texts. The author discusses examples from Classical Greek and Latin as well as New Testament Greek, especially their word order, grammatical and lexical features. On this basis he proposes an analytical approach to the description of the linguistic values connected on some degree with the communicative structure of these examples. The contextual procedures of indicating markers of thematic or rhematic elements of the sentences in question should be compared with conclusions drawing on the grammatical and semantic observations on the sentence constituents. The determination of theme and rheme exponents must be made - depending on the language - by verifying the means of coding information structure, relevant to the given language, text type, and time of its composition. A complete description of these means should be proceeded by detailed investigation of, for example, in the case of Ancient Greek: standard and contrastive word order, initial positions of utterances (including semantic descriptions of items involved in these positions), functions of the particles, conjunctions, articles, adverbs, personal pronouns, anaphors et al., syntactic and semantic roles of the constituents, etc. The second part of this article considers information status and value of Greek prolepsis. The author distinguishes morphological, syntactic and lexical prolepsis. The las two types are discussed using examples from Medea by Eurypides and the Gospel of St. John. The first example represents syntactic prolepsis, the second one - lexical. Neither the pronoun ἡμᾶς 'we' from Medea, nor the noun φοινίκων 'palm branches' from St. John's Gospel are thematic as claimed by some researches. Both syntactic and lexical prolepsis are components of a different level of utterances than the material one. The author postulates to consider them as rhematic rather than thematic. Prolepsis functions like quotation which comments on the whole utterance.
