Opis:
The aim of the study was to compare the body surface temperature changes at winter swimmers associated in "Wrocławskie Morsy", Wroclaw regular swimmers club, who immersed themselves in ice-cold water in January in years 2013 and 2014. The study involved 10 male winter swimmers (about 39 years of age, with BMI around 26.5) who participated in 15 immersions during each year. The distribution of body surface temperature was registered with a ther-mographic camera before and after three-minute-long treatments (i.e. baths) in ice-cold water. The thermographic camera used for the research was Thermo Vision A20M connected to a personal computer equipped with the Therma Cam Researcher programme (2.8 version). The atmospheric conditions of the pre- and post-treatment expositions differed in temperature (around 12°C), pressure and humidity. After the treatment in water of temperature at 2°C, and air of temperature at -11°C, a temperature decrease of 90% was determined in lower limbs, and a drop of 60% was established in upper limbs. A 20% difference was noted between the anterior and posterior surface areas of upper limbs, which can be explained by the structure and composition of the discussed body parts. Inconsistency of atmospheric conditions may constitute a source of around 30% discrepancy in the temperatures measured after the treatment in years 2013 and 2014.

Among thermal stimulation treatments that have a beneficial effect on the human body general application of cold and various forms of massage are mentioned which can be assessed by means of thermovision analysis. The aim of the study was to evaluate changes in the distribution of surface body temperature under the influence of whole-body cryostimulation, classical massage and hot stone massage. Materials and methods: The study was conducted on a group of 40 men aged 20–24 years. They were subjected to a cryostimulation treatment at –120 °C and –140 °C, and to heat-stimulating treatments in the form of massages. Before the treatment, blood pressure and heart rate were measured. Temperature distribution in the 12 areas of the body surface was recorded using a Thermo Vision A20M Thermo Vision Camera with Therma CAM Researcher 2.8 software. Results: Statistically significant differences between cryostimulation treatments in the left upper limb and the back of the trunk were found. After heat-stimulating treatments, a statistically significant increase in temperature after classic massage was observed in the lower limbs, and a similar increase in temperature was noted in the rear of the pectoral girdle and of the trunk after hot stone massage. Conclusions: The thermovision analysis showed a great variation of body surface temperature depending on the body area. The higher changes in temperature, of up to 20%, were found within the upper and lower extremities in the group treated with cryostimulation. After heat-stimulating treatments, lower temperature differences, of 2–6%, were observed, the largest within the trunk and the lower limbs.

Opis:
This study examined the impact of oral supplementation with a new organic selenium preparation (selenitetriglycerides) on the health of camels (Camelus dromedarius). The experiment was conducted on 7 female camels, which were given 240 mg per animal per day of selenitetriglycerides with an oesophageal probe and subsequently monitored for 28 days. Blood samples for tests were collected 10 times (on day 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 14 and 28) and the following parameters were determined: the level of selenium, vitamin E, the activity of aspartate transaminase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK) and the concentration of total protein, glucose, urea and creatinine. The following hematological parameters were determined in whole blood: white blood cell count (WBC), red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin level (HGB), platelet count (PLT) and packed cell volume (PCV). Selenium serum level increased significantly on the second day (from 40.18 µg l-1 to 198.79 µg l-1), peaked on day 7 (514.76 µg l-1) and remained at a statistically significant level relative to the baseline to the end of the experiment. Clinical observations and analysis of the hematological parameters, liver and kidney function parameters did not show any negative effect of selenitetriglycerides on camel health. The results indicate that selenitetriglycerides can be a safe and effective method of selenium supplementation in camels.

Opis:
Long-distance endurance races are a big challenge for a horse’s body. The prolonged exercise and dehydration associated with it, in adverse circumstances, may dysregulate many metabolic processes. The aim of this study was to assess changes in electrolyte balance in horses during endurance races, and to explain the potential need for electrolyte supplementation. The experiment was performed on fifty-six horses aged 9-15 years. Haematological and biochemical parameters of horse blood were tested before, during and after the completion of a 120 km endurance race. Electrolyte status (Na+, K+, Cl-) was assessed by analysing test results in horses that completed the race without any clinical symptoms of metabolic disorders and received no additional mineral supplements before the race. The following haematological parameters were determined: red blood cell and white blood cell counts, haemoglobin levels, haematocrit and red blood cell indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC). Enzymatic tests involved the serum levels of lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase. A significant increase was found in the levels of haemoglobin, lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase activity, but the values of these parameters were within the normal physiological ranges. Other parameters (WBC, RBC, Ht, MCV, MCH, MCHC, Na+, K+, Cl-) changed slightly, but were also within the ranges characteristic of sporthorses. The results suggest that horses well prepared for effort do not require additional supplementation of minerals during endurance races under conditions of the Polish climate.

Termowizyjna analiza temperatury poszczególnych obszarów ciała przed i bezpośrednio po zabiegu wykazała zależność pomiędzy składem ciała a zmianami temperatur w kolejnych dniach zabiegowych. Przedstawione wyniki są badaniami wstępnymi i stanowią fragment badań dotyczących dynamiki zmian rozkładu temperatury w zabiegach krioterapeutycznych.
The cryogenic temperatures are used in the Wroclaw centre from 1989. In this work, changes of temperature distribution in various body areas during a 10-day treatment, were analyzed. Women in age of about 55 were exposed to the systemic cryotherapy (cryostimulation). On the basis of anthropometric measurements two sub-groups were defined; group A – with normal body mass and group B comprising of overweight subjects (BMI – body mass index) and subjects with obesity (WHR – waist to hip ratio). Thermo-visual analysis of chosen body areas before and directly after the treatment revealed correlation between body composition and temperature changes after cryotherapy. Presented results of the preliminary study are the fragment of more extended examination of the dynamics of temperature changes in course of cryotherapeutic treatment.

Opis:
Minerals, in particular micronutrients such as copper, manganese, zinc, selenium and chromium, deliver health benefits for high-yielding dairy cows. The availability of nutrients is particularly important during the transition period (between 3 weeks prepartum to 3-4 weeks postpartum), which is a highly vulnerable time in the production cycle that determines the health status of lactating cows, their milk yield and reproductive performance. In cows, prolonged mineral deficiency can produce subclinical symptoms of nutrient deficiency and, if untreated, can lead to a clinical presentation of the disorder. Less severe deficiencies, in particular micronutrient deficiencies, are more difficult to identify because they induce only minor functional and structural changes in the body, but together with energy metabolism disorders, they can lead to oxidative stress and immunosuppression, in particular in the transition period. Micronutrient supplements reduce the harmful effects of free radicals because the majority of micronutrients form the active centers of antioxidant enzymes. Dietary supplementation promotes reproductive performance, healthy fetal development and immunity. Micronutrients alleviate bacterial infections associated with mastitis, lower somatic cell counts in milk and minimize the risk of metabolic diseases caused by a negative energy balance. This study discusses the role of the major micronutrients in cattle nutrition and their effect on the health status of transition cows.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to investigate possible alterations in acid-base balance parameters and the coagulation profile in neonatal diarrheic calves. Twenty neonatal diarrheic and 20 clinically healthy neonatal calves aged between 1 week to 10 days were used. All blood samples were taken on the third day from the onset of diarrhea symptom. Venous blood samples were collected from each animal to determine platelet numbers, pH, pCO₂, pO₂, HCO₃⁻, BE, O₂SAT, ctCO₂ and electrolytes (K⁺, Na⁺ and Cl⁻). Plasma samples were collected from each animal for the measurement of prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), thrombin time (TT), the concentrations of fibrinogen, D-dimer and the activity of antithrombin III (AT III). Blood pH (7.19), BE (-10.6 mmol/l), HCO₃⁻ (25.15 mmol/l), pO₂ (3.33 kPa), O₂SAT (24.12 %) were significantly lower and serum concentration of K⁺ (6.55 mmol/l) was significantly higher in diarrheic calves. These changes indicate the state of uncompensated metabolic acidosis with accompanying hyperkalemia. TT (32.05s) and APTT (39.9s) values were more prolonged in calves with diarrhea than in the control group. D-dimer (587.25 μg/l) concentrations were significantly increased while a visible drop in AT III (103.75%) activity and platelets counts (598 x10⁹/l) were observed in diarrheic group of calves. The results suggest that a consumptive type of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) developed in diarrheic calves.

Opis:
One of the largest challenges for the dairy industry is to provide cows with a diet which is highly energetic but does not negatively affect their rumens’ functions. In highly productive dairy cows, feeding diets rich in readily fermentable carbohydrates provides energy precursors needed for maximum milk production, but simultaneously decreases ruminal pH, leading to a widespread prevalence of subacute ruminal acidosis. Maximizing milk production without triggering rumen acidosis still challenges dairy farmers, who try to prevent prolonged bouts of low ruminal pH mainly by proper nutrition and management practices. The animals try to avoid overeating fermentable feeds, as it causes negative consequences by disturbing digestive processes. The results of several experiments show that ruminants, including sheep and beef cattle, are able to modify some aspects of feeding behaviour in order to adjust nutrient intake to their needs and simultaneously prevent physiological disturbances. Particularly, such changes (e.g., increased preference for fibrous feeds, reduced intake of concentrates) were observed in animals, which were trying to prevent the excessive drop of rumen fluid pH. Thanks to a specific mechanism called “the postingestive feedback”, animals should be able to work out such a balance in intake, so they do not suffer either from hunger or from negative effects of over-ingesting the fermentable carbohydrates. This way, an acidosis should not be a frequent problem in ruminants. However, prolonged periods of excessively decreased rumen pH are still a concern in dairy cows. It raises a question, why the regulation of feed intake by postingestive feedback does not help to maintain stable rumen environment in dairy cows?

The aim of this study was to determine the presence of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript-like immunoreactive (CART-LI) neurons and co-localisation of CART with vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT), neuronal nitric oxide synthase (n-NOS), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), substance P (SP) and leu-enkephalin (LENK) in the enteric nervous system of the porcine gastric cardia by using a double-labelling immunofluorescence technique. CART-LI neurons were observed in the myenteric plexus (18.2}2.6%). A dense network of CART-LI nerve fibers was mainly observed in the muscular layer. CART showed co-localization mainly with VAChT, n-NOS, VIP and to a lesser degree with LENK and SP. Distribution of CART and its co- ocalization with other neurotransmitters suggest that this peptide plays an important role in gastric motility in the pig.

Opis:
The electromagnetic fields (EMFs) have been shown to alter animal and human behavior, such as directional orientation, learning, pain perception (nociception or analgesia) and anxiety-related behaviors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of electromagnetic fields of high-frequency microwaves on pain perception and anti-nociceptive activity of tramadol (TRAM) - analgetic effective in the treatment of moderate to severe acute and chronic pain states. Electromagnetic fields exposures of a) 1500 MHz frequency and b) modulated, 1800 MHz (which is identical to that generated by mobile phones) were applied. Paw withdrawal latency (PWL) to thermal stimulus was measured in vehicle or tramadol (TRAM) treated animals before and after 30, 60 and 90 minutes from injections. The differences in the level of pain (PWL) between control group and rats exposed to EMF alone in three measurements, were not observed. Tramadol alone significantly increased PWLs to thermal stimulus in comparison to vehicle results at 30 (p < 0.001) and 60 minutes (p < 0.05) after drug injection. EMF exposure of both frequencies transiently suppressed analgesic effect of tramadol, significantly reducing paw withdrawal latency in animals treated with this drug at 30 minutes from the drug injection.
