- The article presents the methodology of the Theory of Critical Distances applied for steel 42CrMo4(40HM). The following article demonstrate the use of FEM numerical simulations in an SIMULIA ABAQUS environment for determination of notch stress distribution in SENT (Single Edge Notched Tension) specimen along the notch axis with different configuration of root radius. In order to obtain correct values of the numerical simulation, static tensile test was carried out. In order to estimate basic material properties and strength leading to the rupture of the notched component sample, the point (PM) and line method (LM) were used. In the article, it was examined whether the characteristic length L is independent of the notch configuration. Based on the obtained results, experimental studies and numerical simulations have been designated critical loading conditions for the test material. Finally, it was calculated a critical value of Kc. For 42CrMo4 steel, the critical distance L is equal 0,4mm with characteristic strength estimated on the level: 2250 MPa (for LM method 0.47, 1945MPa correspondingly).
