Opis:
The presented article describes the role of community of indigenous microorganisms occurring in the Kupferschiefer black shale in elements mobilization from fossil organic matter of the deposit. The short description of metalloorganic compounds and metalloporphyrins extracted from black shale was presented as well as the characterization of indigenous microorganisms. The processes of fossil organic matter colonization, biofilm development and elements mobilization accompanying bacterial growth was summarized.

Opis:
Extracellular compounds produced by a consortium of indigenous bacteria interact with the polymetallic Kupferschiefer black shale and implicate for elements mobilization and/or complexation. The extracellular compounds were identified by GC-MS as carboxylic acids, but also aromatic acids and alcohols. Due to their action in batch experiment 16 elements were mobilized from black shale. Among mobilized elements precious metals (Cu, Ni, Co, V) as well as toxic heavy metals (As) were determined. Extracellular metabolites produced by studied consortium may be utilized in non-contact biorecovery of precious metals from neutral or slightly alkaline ores, and in the bioremediation of heavy metalcontaminated sites.

Post mining uranium wastes from Radoniów were analysed and chemical, mineralogical andpetrographic characteristics were performed. Additionally, the size parameters of dumps and direction of water runoff were estimated using LIDAR data. Bioaccumulation of uranium in different plants covering dump’s surface was shown.

Opis:
Biotechnology is an effective and environmental friendly method of waste utilization and poor refractory ores exploitation, well known since 1949 and successfully developed in many countries: Spain, Bulgaria, USA, and Sweden. Biotechnology opens the possibility to obtain uranium as by-product in rare element recovery process (eg. Co, Au, Re, Rh, Pt) and positively affects the economic efficiency of tech-nology. The research program of biological exploitation of waste and poor ores in Poland is presented. Microbial consortia able to oxidize iron under neutral and acidic conditions (Fe concentration in ore is 1.8–3.4%) are isolated and developed during project realization.

Opis:
We compared the biochemical profiles of Physalis ixocarpa hairy roots transformed with Agrobacterium rhizogenes ATCC and A4 strains with non-transformed root cultures. The studied clones of A4- and ATCC-induced hairy roots differed significantly; the latter showed greater growth potential and greater ability to produce secondary metabolites (tropane alkaloids) and to biotransform hydroquinone to arbutin. We compared glucose content, alanine and aspartate aminotransferase activity, and L-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity. We analyzed markers of prooxidant/antioxidant homeostasis: catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, oxidase, glutathione peroxidase and transferase activity, and the levels of ascorbate, glutathione, tocopherol and lipid peroxidation. We found that transformation induced strain-specific regulation, including regulation based on redox signals, determining the rate of allocation of carbon and nitrogen resources to secondary metabolism pathways. Our results provide evidence that A. rhizogenes strain-specific modification of primary metabolites contributed to regulation of secondary metabolism and could determine the ability of P. ixocarpa hairy root clones to produce tropane alkaloids and to convert exogenously applied hydroquinone to pharmaceutically valuable arbutin. Of the studied parameters, glucose content, L-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity and alanine aminotransferases activity may be indicators of the secondary metabolite-producing potential of different P. ixocarpa hairy root clones.
