Opis:
The article presents the biography of Edmund Goldzamt, an architect whose scientific biography has not been told yet. Born in 1921 in Lublin, educated in the USSR, he returned to Poland in 1952. Despite his modest design achievements, he played a significant role in the Stalinization of Polish cultural life. The ideological theses he developed (drawing on Soviet guidelines) were the driving force in introducing the doctrine of socialist realism in Polish architecture and urban planning. In addition, Edmund Goldzamt was a longtime theoretician and educator; he lectured at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology and had a scientific career at the Polish Academy of Sciences. After 1956, he revised his ideological views and devoted himself to research on the social determinants of architecture and urban planning.

In the People’s Republic of Poland, Warsaw experienced two periods of accelerated urban development. The first one was the time of reconstruction, which lasted until 1955. The second occurred in the first half of the 1970s . Wisłostrada and Trasa Łazienkowska were built, the Central Railway Station was erected, and design works on the underground railway line were resumed. These activities, completely different from the stagnant investment policies implemented by Władysław Gomułka, owed a lot to the communist party patronage, although it would be difficult to point to specific names. The left-bank Vistula Boulevards dating back to the beginning of the 20th century constitute a valuable testimony of the hydrotechnical construction industry. The idea for the boulevards constructed in the interwar period has come from the 19th century boulevards of Georges Haussmann in Paris and constitutes a unique example of the bold ideas of President Stefan Starzyński. The idea was to connect the city with the river in order to elevate the rank of Warsaw as a European capital. The interwar boulevards were designed according to the contemporary canon of modern architecture and Bronisław Plebiński, an eminent engineer, supervised the construction works. The construction of the boulevards, initiated in the 19th century, was discontinued when World War II broke out. In the post-war period the former boulevards were connected with the abutment and the new staircases of the Śląsko-Dąbrowski bridge. The rebuilding of the retaining walls, destroyed as a result of military activities, was conducted together with the construction of the East-West road (Trasa W-Z), with the use of resources available at that time. The revitalisation designs are somewhat alarming, as they aim to transform the boulevards significantly. The levelling of the slope in order to replace it with a reinforced concrete construction, secondarily paved, seems utterly pointless and destructive. “Bulwary Starzyńskiego” (the boulevards reconstructed by Starzyński) also deserve to be protected and recognised as the testimony of a past epoch. Apart from the modernist and functional architectural form, special attention needs to be paid to the selection of noble materials and the quality of workmanship. The renovation and revitalisation of the boulevards, conducted according to conservation principles, would restore them to their original elegant form. Both the 19th century and the interwar boulevards should be protected by the conservator as monuments of significant historical value, inscribed on the register of monuments.

Opis:
The subject of the article is the history of some of the interesting interwar period constructions, namely the modernist railway platform umbrella roofs and the train station waiting halls of the Warsaw Railway Junction electrified railway lines. In 1933, an agreement was concluded between the Polish State Railways (PKP) and a consortium of British entrepreneurs on the electrification of the suburban railway lines of the Warsaw Railway Junction (to Otwock, Żyrardów and Mińsk Mazowiecki). The completion of this railway investment, one of the most significant in the interwar period, required the redevelopment of the track systems of the electrified lines and the construction of new platforms, umbrella roofs and stations. The design works related to the electrification and redevelopment of the Warsaw Railway Junction lines were conducted by the Polish State Railways Design and Study Bureau in cooperation with the Polish State Railways Warsaw Railway Junction Electrification Bureau and the Regional Directorate of the State Railways in Warsaw, under the supervision of the Ministry of Communication. At the stage of drawing up the concept of the communication system for the electrified lines, experiences of European railway management boards using electrified lines to handle suburban traffic were used to a large extent. In creating the communication system of the electric urban railway, the Polish State Railways Design and Study Bureau based their work largely on the Berlin Stadtschnellbahn (S-Bahn). The author of the concept of track systems and stations, as well as traffic organisation for the electrified railway lines of the Warsaw Railway Junction was Kazimierz Centnerszwer, Eng., a 1927 graduate of the Faculty of Railway Transport Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology, an employee of the Polish State Railways Design and Study Bureau. Platforms adapted to the new electric rolling stock were designed at the suburban stations of the electrified lines. They were island, bay and side platforms. At the time, the Polish State Railways Design and Study Bureau created a repeatable design of a station/ platform umbrella roof connected to the waiting hall and the ticket office building or office building. Depending on the local conditions, single-pitched umbrella roofs were also built on island platforms and double-pitched ones in the case of cross-platform interchanges. Unfortunately, in spite of the preliminary research having been conducted, the name of the architect who was the author of the project remains unknown. However, the authorship of Arseniusz Romanowicz, Eng., architect, was ruled out beyond doubt. The modernist platform umbrella roofs and waiting halls constitute an extremely interesting example of Polish modernist railway architecture of the 1930s. At the same time, they are a relic of one of the most prominent investments of the interwar period, namely the construction of the cross-city railway line and the electrification of the Warsaw Railway Junction. Their value is especially high in the context of the destruction of all the railway stations in Warsaw (including the modernist Warszawa Główna main railway station) and a considerable part of Warsaw’s railway architecture and infrastructure during the war.
