    Opis:
    The article is devoted to selected aspects of students life Polish and Russian. Students relate to education, leisure and employment prospects in their chosen profession in the future. The study showed that students of two universities working together, which differs very much (the capital city and the peripheral, part-time studies and full-time, private university and state), in most cases responded similarly and likewise presented their problems. This demonstrates the similarity of the problems that bother modern youth. In particular, this applies to societies undergoing transformation.

    The big cities of Poland are – with reference to the big city definition – the municipal centres with a population more than 500 000 inhabitants or urban agglomerations having at least the same population size which the central area has not less than half the total size. It is worth underlining the necessity of changes in the structures of func- tioning of municipal offices to complete the proposed directions of changes in social policy and social work in large cities. Due to significance of social problems it is necessary to establish the separate units of the municipal offices which would deal with social issues and social infrastructure and would also establish both the social issues research centres and social infrastructure facilities. Another essential aspect of changes in the management of a social sphere is an introduction of principles of the management based on results as a standard, that is in other words the introduction of New Management Public concept. The condition for effective introducing changes to the social welfare organizations in Poland, including particularly social work, is the computerization of the system because without reliable and quick information, modern social work is out of question.

    The process of globalization in scientific literature is defined in a very varied way, first of all, because it is a complex, multi-dimensional and multiaspectual process. R. Robertson presents the most general and universal definition of globalization which nowadays has become the reference for formulating different definitions. According to him globalization is a set of processes which make the social world as one. A similar general formulation of this process can be found in A. Giddens’s writings – globalization is an intensification of world-wide social relations. The process of cultural globalization is proceeding before our eyes. We can observe and analyse it in every respect. However, until it lasts, it is hard to foresee what shape will take a predominant current of transformations in the contemporary culture. Today there is domination of the Western culture, particularly the American one. However, economists forecast that even in the first half of the 21st century the economies of China and India will become the world’s largest economies. Then, as it was already in the past, they will influence transformations occurring in culture in a significant way.

    The period of system transformation (particularly in the first decade of transformation) is time of a demographic crisis in the majority of countries of Central and Eastern Europe. It also influ- enced unfavourably a demographic situation in the big cities in both of these regions. The specificity of the process of transformation of developing quickly big cities of Central and Eastern Europe into contemporary metropolises consists in both taking into account universal factors influencing this process and also unique factors characteristic only for this group of cities. The largest cities of Poland are the best ex ample of it.

    The oldest city in the world appeared in the Neolithic era. The rapid development of agriculture contributed to the increase in population and population density. There were the first townships, which were later called "protocities." By today's criteria can say that it was a little crowded, but in those days Catal Hüyük, Hatsilar or Jericho, numbering several thousand people, were considered large populations. In the Neolithic civilizations laid the foundation. First civilizations appeared in the IV millennium BC. e. in the Middle East. Why the Middle East has become a source of development? Unequivocal answer to this question does not exist, but this fact contributed to such prerequisites: climatic conditions; geographical location, abundant raw materials for construction, easy access to other raw materials (for example to ores of various metals). Along with Mesopotamia and Egypt in the Middle East have become the centers of civilization as India and China. The first major civilization emerged in river valleys. Their development is closely linked with the introduction of irrigation in agriculture. Irrigation system repeatedly increased productivity, making it possible to provide more food population. Among the characteristics of ancient civilizations should be noted: urban development and the emergence of states, social stratification and hierarchization societies, the use of writing, the development of scientific principles, division and time measurement.
