Opis:
This study documents for the first time the presence of testate amoebae on glaciers. Three shallow firn cores of 10 m depth were obtained from the Mocho-Choshuenco and Osorno volcanoes, Southern Andes, Chile, in October and November, 2005. Euglyphid testate amoebae were detected in 28 samples that correspond to the spring-summer layers of the firn cores. Inspection of 454 collected individuals reveals the presence of four different taxa. Three of these taxa, Trinema lineare, Trinema enchelys and Puytoracia bergeri have previously been reported in ice-free environments. The fourth taxon corresponds to a new species Puytoracia jenswendti nov. sp. The observation of food content and reproductive activities in a significant fraction of specimens evidence that testate amoebae are competent to inhabit glaciers. The testate amoebae found in the firn cores display clear seasonal variations in abundance indicating that these records can provide a new and novel proxy as paleoindicator for firn/ice core dating and for estimation of past glacier mass balance.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to show that different methods for calculating the spread (Bid-Ask) and the methods for annualizing intra-day data affect the results of econometric models. To achieve our goal, we analyze different econometric models in the context of: i) the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) adoption, ii) the reduction of information asymmetry due to new corporate governance standards, and iii) the ownership concentration that characterize the Chilean Capital Market. We test the quality of the information delivered to the market using two information disclosure indices (DIS and Botosan). We find that the definition of spread and the methods for annualizing intraday data it is a key decision and may affect the statistical significance of the variables of a specific model.

Opis:
Introduction and aim. The whole-body vibration has become known for optimizing the production of muscle power due to mechanical oscillations that are dependent on vibration frequency. However, the effects of varying the vibration frequency on flexibility have still been little explored. Compare the effects of two frequencies of whole-body vibration on flexibility and extensibility of the lower limbs. Material and methods. Randomized clinical trial with a sample of 42 young adult volunteers of both sexes, who performed squatting sessions with individualized load on a platform and distributed into three groups of vibration frequency: control group (CG), with the platform off; low frequency group (LF), with a frequency of 30 Hz; high frequency group (HF), with a frequency of 45 Hz. In total, the intervention was carried out in 12 sessions and lasted 6 weeks, with 2 sessions per week. Flexibility, evaluated before and after the intervention by the sit and reach test (Wells bench) and by evaluating the extensibility of the ischiotibials by goniometry. Results. No statistical differences were observed for any of the outcomes evaluated. Conclusion. None of the proposed frequencies produced gains in flexibility and extensibility of the lower extremities and there was no superiority of one frequency over another.

Opis:
The triggering of a “dirty bomb” generates a complex scenario, with enormous challenges for the responders due to initial misinformation and the urgency to act quickly yet effectively. Normally, the first 100 h are decisive for perceiving the risk in a more realistic dimension, but the support of methodologies that rely on computational simulations can be valuable when making key decisions. This work seeks to provide support for the early decision-making process by using a Gaussian model for the distribution of a quantity of Cs-137 spread by a radiological dispersive device (RDD). By sequentially joining two independent programs, HotSpot Health Physics codes and RESidual RADiation (RESRAD)-RDD family of codes, we came up with results that suggest a segmented approach to the potentially affected population. These results advocate that (a) the atmospheric stability conditions represented by the Pasquill–Gifford classes and (b) the population subgroups defi ned by radiation exposure conditions strongly influence the postdetonation radiological effects. These variables should be taken into account in the elaboration of flexible strategies that include many climatic conditions and to prioritize attention to different groups of public at risk. During the initial phases of such an event, it is believed that simulations using Gaussian models may be of value in anticipating the possible changes in key variables during the decision-making process. These variables may severely affect the effectiveness of the actions of responders and the general public’s safety.

Opis:
This work aims to analyze the effects of niobium on the bioactivity of a titanium, nickel, aluminum, and niobium alloy obtained by the Plasma Skull Push Pull process (PSPP). Titanium alloys, such as NiTinol (NiTi), are metallic biomaterials that have wide application in health and surgical prostheses. In this work the microstructural and bioactivity characteristics of the alloys are evaluated. The addition of aluminum improves alloy ductility and reduces its cost. The addition of niobium favors the hydroxyapatite nucleation. Therefore, the addition of the combination of the two elements contributes to lower cost and better alloy bioactivity.

Opis:
Introduction. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic, autoimmune inflammatory disease of unknown origin, mainly affecting synovial joints and related structures, including the adjacent musculature, generating great disability and reduction in quality of life. Aim. This study was designed to investigate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on gastrocnemius of Wistar rats subjected to an experimental model of RA. Material and methods. Forty male Wistar rats were used, separated into: acute and chronic, being subdivided into Control Group (CG): without intervention, Lesion Group (LG): submitted to lesion, Laser Control Group (LCG): without lesion and with treatment, and Laser Lesion Group (LLG): submitted to lesion and LLLT. The treatment with LLLT occurred in four points of the right knee, wavelength of 660 nm, energy density of 5 J/cm², energy per point of 0.003 J. Morphometric analysis was performed using a 40x magnification photomicrograph and analyzed using the Image-Pro-Plus 6.0 program. Results. As result of the acute group there was a difference only for muscle mass, being higher in CG. For the chronic group there was significant difference for cross-sectional area, larger and smaller diameter, again with the control group obtaining higher values than the others, for the number of nuclei LG was lower than CG and LCG, but LLG was not different from any of them. Conclusion. It is concluded that treatment with LLLT was not very effective in reversing the harmful effects of RA on the gastrocnemius muscle.

Opis:
The influence of extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMFs) on microorganisms has been a subject of experimental investigations with promising results. In the present study, it was demonstrated that 2.0 mT 60Hz ELF-EMFs inhibited Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes growth. In addition, no synergistic or antagonistic parasite growth and viability effects were observed after cultures were co-exposed to magnetic fields and Nifurtimox, a well-known anti-trypanosome drug. Moreover, the current study represents the first report regarding direct magnetic fields effects on Trypanosomas.
