    Arctic, especially western coast of Spitsbergen has been a field of taking research by scientist from UMCS and AR in Lublin for more than 15 years. Researches have been taken there are connected with earth sciences like: meteorology and climatology, geomorphology, hydrography, geology and agriculture and botany. Meteorological observations were steady point of researches taking on every UMCS?s trips in Spitsbergen. At the beginning, at the 1986-1988 seasons were very wide, and measurements were taken every 3 hours. Between 1989 and 1999 measurements were taken 4 times a day a.e. every 6 hours. Since 1999 measurements have been doing by automatic stations. Appliance this equipment let us taking measurements with 10 minutes time step. The aim of this paper is to present course of meteorological conditions during the scientific trip to Spitsbergen in 2001 at the background of period 1986-2000. There were made comparisons of course mean daily four meteorological elements as: air temperature measured at 200 cm height [°C], wind speed [m/s], cloudiness, and precipitation [mm] from 2001 season with data collected during 15-years UMCS geographical trips on Spitsbergen. We can make statement that in thermic season 2001 was a bit cooler (0.1°C) than the period 1986-2000. At that season variability of mean daily temperatures was lower than in period. The lowest mean daily temperature was 2.5°C, and all days in period 2001 were lukewarm. The rate of mean daily cloudiness in period 1986-2000 is compensated. 2001 season was the same as other seasons during period. The air masses are strongly modified by circulation and orography. Season of 2001 was featured by lower mean daily wind speed (3.2 m/s) than in the period ? 4 m/s, also highest mean daily wind speed in 2001 was lower than in period 1986-2000. The greatest variability of four analysed elements on that period has precipitation. The variable of this element exceed 71.7 mm, which we can express as a ratio 1 to 20. 2001 season was dryer than mean of period about 11 mm.

    The aim of the study washas been to determine the differences in the 24-hour means values of some selected meteorological elements between the stations analysed and also to determine the influence of atmospheric circulation on their distribution. Meteorological data collected at the Polar Station of the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Hornsund and the Calypsobyen Station of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University of Lublin wasere used for the present research. The present studies showed that air temperature in Calypsobyen is on average 0.6°C higher than in Hornsund. Calypsobyen is warmer than Hornsund fromat almost all circulation directions. Hornsund is warmer only in the case of the NW direction. The highest levels of temperature differences (> 1°C) occur from theat S and SW directions. Calypsobyen was 0.3°C colder than Hornsund only in the case of the NWc type. Regarding the average total cloud coveriness of the sky [0-10], the difference between the two stations analysed was as small as 0.1. This results from thea high total cloud coveriness of the sky during summer. No differences were found in the case of medium wind velocity levels similarly as was in the case for the of cloud coveriness. The a mean difference forro this parameter was 0.1 m/s. The location of the station, as well as the orographic reletions in its surroundings, exerts a significant influence on the difference in thetiation of wind velocities in relation to the directions of the circulation directions. The total - taken ever twenty-four hour sums - of the atmospheric precipitation levels as an averaged with to the circulation directions in Hornsund were on average 0.8 mm higher than for in Calypsobyen. Precipitation levels were higher in Calypsobyen only from theat N and E directions and in the situation of a weather wedge over Spitsbergen (Ka), however, even then the values of these differences were small (0.1-0.2 mm). Analysis of the data analysis pointed to the significance of the direction of the circulation direction and its influence on the value of differences between the meteorological elements selected. In some cases (i.e. wind velocity, precipitation level) local factors - and including orographic relations and the location of the measuring site - are decisive.

    Celem pracy jest ocena możliwości wykorzystania danych satelitarnych do określania dat początku i końca okresu wegetacyjnego. Analizowane charakterystyki zostały wyznaczone na podstawie wartości wskaźnika wegetacji Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) oraz obrazów satelitarnych o rozdzielczości przestrzennej 500 m, pochodzących ze skanera MODIS (produkt MOD12Q2). Stosując tę metodę, daty początku i końca okresu wegetacyjnego wyznaczono dla obszarów w promieniu 10 km od miejsca położenia trzech posterunków meteorologicznych na terenie Lubelszczyzny: Czesławic k. Nałęczowa, Felina (wschodnia część Lublina) oraz Bezka k. Chełma. Okres badań obejmował lata 2001-2009, zaś daty odnosiły się do wybranych rodzajów pokrycia terenu (gruntów ornych, łąk i lasów). Stwierdzono, że na podstawie danych wyznaczonych na bazie wskaźnika EVI okres wegetacyjny trwał średnio o miesiąc krócej w stosunku do charakterystyk, obliczonych metodami tradycyjnymi, tj. Gumińskiego i Huculaka-Makowca. Ponadto początek okresu wegetacyjnego, wyznaczonego metodą teledetekcyjną, był istotnie statystycznie skorelowany ze średnią wartością temperatury powietrza w okresie styczeń-marzec oraz z liczbą dni z pokrywą śnieżną od grudnia do marca. Z kolei daty końca okresu wegetacyjnego wykazywały największą współzmienność z sumami promieniowania całkowitego we wrześniu
    The aim of this study is to evaluate the possibility of using satellite data to determine dates of the onset and end of the growing season. The analysed characteristics were determined based on the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and satellite images with spatial resolution of 500 m, derived from MODIS scanner (MOD12Q2 product). Based on this method, dates of the onset and end of the growing season were determined for areas within 10 km from the location of three meteorological stations in the Lublin Region: Czesławice near Nałęczów, Felin (eastern district of Lublin) and Bezek near Chełm. The study period covered the years 2001-2009 and dates referred to the selected land cover types (arable lands, meadows and forests). It was found that the growing season determined with the remote sensing method was on average shorter by one month compared with that estimated with traditional methods such as those by Gumiński and Huculak-Makowiec. The onset of the growing season was significantly correlated with the mean air temperature in January-March period and the number of days with snow cover from December to March. In addition, dates of the end of growing season showed the highest correlation with the sum of the total radiation in September.

    Mass wasting is one of the most important processes influencing the shaping of mountain slopes. Most programs for testing mass wasting are limited to short-time, single observations, and to surface measurements of the big phenomenon ignoring shallow landslides occur resulting in slope covers, or on its border with the rock solid. That is why, when analyzing the causes of mass wasting processes, it is extremely important to assess the infl uence of meteorological conditions on water circulation in the landslide slope system and the status of stresses in a soil medium that is connected with it. The aim of this work was to determine the course of changes in stability conditions for two selected slopes, connected with meteorological conditions in the period of 2009–2013 on the area of the Wiśnicz Foothills. Numerical analysis were subjected to two slopes in villages the Królówka and the Łychów. Meteorological data for analysis, i.e. air temperature and soil humidity, wind speed, precipitation sum and length, were taken from the station Jagiellonian University in Łazy. To determine the course of changes of stability factor used capabilities Geostudio 2007 (Slope/W, Vadose/W, Seep/W). The work is a pre-development servant indicate the formation of shallow landslides present in silt. Results of the stability calculations confi rmed the common opinions that conditions of slope balance are very strongly connected with atmospheric precipitation, but it was also shown that they also depend signifi cantly on thermal conditions. These calculations showed that in the period 2009–2013 the most unfavorable conditions of stability were obtained in May 2010, which is a confi rmation of the situation observed in reality.
    Jednym z najważniejszych procesów wpływających na kształtowanie stoków górskich zbudowanych z fliszu karpackiego są ruchy masowe. Tylko na nielicznych obiektach prowadzono kompleksowe, pogłębione badania mechanizmów inicjacji ruchów osuwiskowych. Badania takowe są czasochłonne, a zadowalające i wiarygodne wyniki osiąga się po co najmniej kilkuletnim okresie pomiarów i analiz. Większość programów badań ogranicza się do krótkich, jednorazowych obserwacji i pomiarów powierzchniowych. Uwaga uczestników tych projektów skupia się na dużych osuwiskach strukturalnych obejmujących swoim zasięgiem głęboko zalegające skały trzeciorzędowe, pomijając płytkie osuwiska zachodzące na granicy zwietrzeliny i skał litych oraz w zasięgu samej zwietrzeliny. Celem pracy było określenie przebiegu zmian warunków stateczności wybranych zboczy związanych ze warunkami meteorologicznych występujących w latach 2008–2013 na obszarze Pogórza Wiśnickiego. Dla potrzeb pracy wykorzystano dane meteorologiczne, tj. temperatura powietrza, wilgotność gleby, prędkość wiatru, sumy opadów i liczba dni z deszczem, pochodzące ze Stacji Naukowej IGiGP UJ w Łazach koło Bochni (Pogórze Wiśnickie). Przeprowadzono terenowe i laboratoryjne badania parametrów geotechnicznych gruntów stanowiących pokrywy stokowe wybranych zboczy osuwiskowych we wsiach Królówka i Łychówo. Wcześniej wspomiane dane meteorologiczne, a także dane dotyczące temperatury, wilgotności względnej powietrza wykorzystano w dalszej części pracy do określenia zmian stanu naprężeń dla dwóch zboczy osuwiskowych. W tym celu zastosowano moduły Slope/W, Vados/W oraz Seep/W stanowiące część pakietu GeoSlope. Wyniki analiz potwierdziły, że stabilność zbocza jest silnie związana z opadami atmosferycznymi, ale wykazały również jej istotną zależność od warunków termicznych. Przeprowadzone obliczenia z lat 2009–2013 wykazały, że najbardziej niekorzystne dla zachowania statyki zbocza warunki wystąpiły w maju 2010 roku, co jest potwierdzeniem obserwacji terenowych.

    Celem niniejszej pracy było porównanie dat początku okresu wegetacyjnego (OW) na obszarze Polski w okresie 2001–2010, które wyznaczono na podstawie dwóch niezależnych metod. Do wyznaczania dat metodą Gumińskiego wykorzystano średnie miesięczne wartości temperatury powietrza z punktów gridowych rozmieszczonych na terenie kraju. Natomiast do określenia dat początku OW metodą teledetekcji satelitarnej wykorzystano dane pochodzące z NASA LP DAAC, które były wynikiem pomiarów wykonywanych przez wielospektralny skaner MODIS umieszczony na satelitach Terra i Aqua. Wykazana została znaczna zgodność średnich terminów początku OW w Polsce wyznaczonych tymi dwoma metodami, co może sugerować istotny wpływ czynnika termicznego na wzrost aktywności fotosyntetycznej roślinności po okresie zimowym. Obydwie metody potwierdziły, że przeciętnie najwcześniej początek OW występuje w południowo-zachodniej części kraju, natomiast najpóźniej w Polsce Północnej i na obszarach górskich.
    The aim of the paper is to compare the dates of the onset of the growing season in Poland in the period 2001–2010, which were determined on the basis of two independent methods. The dates determined by Gumiński method based on gridded monthly mean air temperature over Poland area. In turn, satellite data extracted from NASA LP DAAC product, which were the result of measurements performed with multispectral scanner (MODIS) on the Terra and Aqua satellites. It was demonstrated that the average dates of the onset of the growing season in Poland determined by two methods did not differ significantly. It may suggest a significant impact of thermal factor on the increase in the photosynthetic activity of vegetation after the winter months. Both methods confirmed that the earliest average dates of the onset of the growing season occur in the southwestern part of the country, and the latest in northern Poland and in the mountain areas.

    Celem pracy było określenie wpływu wartości wskaźnika pokrycia liściowego (LAI) na wyniki obliczeń stateczności stoku osuwiskowego położonego we wschodniej części Pogórza Wiśnickiego w miejscowości Gwoździec. Obliczenia zostały przeprowadzone w modułach VADOSE/W i SLOPE/W programu GeoStudio 2012 i polegały na integracji obliczeń infiltracji wody opadowej z obliczeniami stateczności. W efekcie obliczeń określono warunki opadowe (długość trwania i sumę opadu) powodujące naruszenie stateczności zbocza (tzw. opad progowy). Wyniki obliczeń wykazały, że wartości LAI z zakresu 1–3, odpowiadające roślinności trawiastej, sprzyjają w dłuższej perspektywie czasu gromadzeniu się wody gruncie, co ogranicza jego zdolność retencji w momencie wystąpienia intensywnych opadów. Z kolei pokrycie terenu, tożsame z wartością LAI=5 odpowiadającymi drzewom, powoduje zwiększenie zdolności retencyjnej gruntów, co wpływa na opóźnienie reakcji gruntu na opady (utratę stateczności zboczy) w stosunku do terenu pokrytego roślinnością trawiastą. Stwierdzono również, że warunki wilgotnościowe panujące w zboczu przed rozpoczęciem intensywnych opadów mają znaczący wpływ na wielkość opadu progowego i w przypadku analizowanego zbocza wyniosły one od 90 mm dla okresu mokrego do ponad 700 mm dla okresu suchego.
    Determination of effect of the leaf area ratio on the results of slope stability calculation of one of the landslide prone slope located in the Pogórze Wiśnickie was presented in the paper. The calculations were carried out in modules Vadose/W and SLOPE/W of package GeoStudio 2012. The calculations involved the integration of rainfall infiltration process and slope stability calculations. As a result, the calculations allow to determinate precipitation conditions (time and accumulated precipitation height) causing slope failure (i.e. rainfall threshold). The calculation results showed significant impact of LAI on the results of modeling. It was revealed, that LAI values in range 1–3, corresponding to the grass vegetation, contribute in long-term to accumulation of precipitation within slope, which limits its retention ability when intense rainfalls occur. In turn, the leaf are index LAI = 5, corresponding to the coverage of trees, increase the retentive capacity of the soil, which resulting in delayed response of slope on rainfall with in comparison to an area covered with grass plants. It was also found significant impact of moisture content conditions on rainfall threshold. It was revealed that in case of analyzed slope threshold rainfall can be comprised from 90 mm to over 700 mm.

    Subject and purpose of work: the purpose of this article is to present the opportunities for rural development and the benefits of participation in the Regional Operational Program of the Lublin Province for the years 2007-2013, as well as the estimation of the level of satisfaction of the inhabitants of the Rossosz Commune in the Bialski Poviat, Lublin Province, using renewable energy sources co-financed by EU funds. Materials and methods: this work was created with the use of author’s interview questionnaire as the basic research tool. The survey was carried out among the inhabitants of the Rossosz Commune. Results and conclusions: participation in the “Clean Energy in the Zielawy Valley” project contributed to the development of rural areas in the Biała Podlaska Poviat of the Lubelskie Province and it was a fundamental factor enabling the installation of devices using renewable energy. The research shows that the vast majority of respondents appreciated the benefits of renewable energy installations and many of them envisage to make use of the possibility of installing renewable energy devices in the near future.
    Przedmiot i cel pracy: Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie możliwości rozwoju obszarów wiejskich oraz korzyści wynikających z udziału w Regionalnym Programie Operacyjnym Województwa Lubelskiego na lata 2007-2013, a także oszacowanie poziomu satysfakcji mieszkańców gminy Rossosz w powiecie bialskim, województwie lubelskim, korzystających z odnawialnych źródeł energii współfinansowanych ze środków unijnych. Materiały i metody: Niniejsza praca powstała z wykorzystaniem autorskiego kwestionariusza wywiadu, jako podstawowego narzędzia badań. Ankietę przeprowadzono z mieszkańcami gminy Rossosz. Wyniki i wnioski: Udział w projekcie „Czysta energia w Dolinie Zielawy” przyczynił się do rozwoju obszarów wiejskich w powiecie bialskim województwa lubelskiego i stanowił podstawowy czynnik umożliwiający montaż urządzeń wykorzystujących energię odnawialną. Z przeprowadzonych badań wynika, iż zdecydowana większość respondentów doceniła korzyści płynące z instalacji odnawialnych źródeł energii i spora ich część w najbliższym czasie planuje skorzystać z możliwości montażu odnawialnych źródeł energii.
