    Purpose – The paper presents an analysis of the broadly defined essence of competitiveness in the healthcare sector and the closely related issue of the competitiveness of healthcare organisations accounting for the specifics of key types of competition in healthcare. The objective of the paper is to demonstrate that the essence of competition between healthcare organisations is represented by a better use of resources by some enterprises and enhanced cost efficiency in the conditions of the increased demand for top quality services. Research method – The research methodology applied in the study was literature research, the analysis of available empirical research results and of the laws and regulations applicable to the healthcare market. The analysis focused on the specifics of the Polish healthcare market and the ensuing conse-quences for the competitiveness of healthcare organisations. Results – The results of the analysis show how complex the issue of competitiveness of healthcare organisations is and how relevant it is for the increase of quality, availability, and innovativeness of healthcare for patients.

    Asenapine is a new antipsychotic drug, approved by the FDA in 2009 for the acute treatment of schizophrenia in adults and for the acute treatment of manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults. The trade name of asenapine in USA is Saphris and proposed trade name in EU is Sycrest. Intended in 2010 European registration comprise analogous indications except mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder. Asenapine has showed high affinity and specificity to numerous dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline and histamine receptors. Both of two major metabolites of the drug are inactive, and the mean elimination half-life is approximately 24 hours. Asenapine is recommended to be administered as a sublingual tablets, ensuring optimal and rapid absorption. The recommended dose in schizophrenia is 5 mg given twice daily, the recommended starting dose in bipolar disorder is 10 mg twice daily. Clinical trials with asenapine proved significantly its efficacy in reduction of positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia as well as symptoms of manic episodes. In all clinical trials, it was generally well tolerated. The most often adverse events were insomnia, somnolence, headache and weight increased, reported as mild or moderate.
    Asenapina jest nowym lekiem przeciwpsychotycznym, dopuszczonym w 2009 roku przez FDA do leczenia ostrych epizodów schizofrenii oraz epizodów manii i epizodów mieszanych związanych z chorobą afektywną dwubiegunową typu I u dorosłych. Nazwa handlowa asenapiny w USA to Saphris, natomiast proponowana w Unii Europejskiej to Sycrest. Planowana na rok 2010 rejestracja europejska ma objąć analogiczne wskazania, z wyjątkiem epizodów mieszanych w przebiegu CHAD. Asenapina wykazuje duże powinowactwo i wysoką swoistość w stosunku do receptorów dopaminowych, serotoninowych, adrenergicznych i histaminowych. Lek jest metabolizowany do dwóch nieaktywnych metabolitów, a okres jego połowicznej eliminacji wynosi mniej więcej 24 godziny. Asenapina jest dostępna w postaci tabletek podjęzykowych, zapewniających optymalne i szybkie wchłanianie leku. Dawka zalecana w schizofrenii to 5 mg dwa razy na dobę, w CHAD typu I zaleca się rozpoczęcie terapii od 10 mg dwa razy dziennie. Badania kliniczne z użyciem asenapiny wykazały w stopniu statystycznie znamiennym jej skuteczność w zmniejszaniu nasilenia zarówno objawów pozytywnych i negatywnych schizofrenii, jak i objawów manii. We wszystkich badaniach lek był dobrze tolerowany. Najczęściej pojawiającymi się działaniami niepożądanymi były: bezsenność, nadmierna senność, bóle głowy i przyrost masy ciała, których nasilenie oceniono jako łagodne lub umiarkowane.

    The paper presents a numerical model of the novel design of the axial magnetic bearing with six cylindrical poles. The motivation behind this idea was to eliminate vibra- tions in rotating machinery due to the axial load. Common conception of such a bearing provides a single component of the electromagnetic force, which is not enough to reduce transverse and lateral vibrations of the armature. The proposed design allows for avoiding wobbling of the disc with the use of a few axial force components that are able to actively compensate the axial load and stabilise the disc in a balanced position. Before a real device is manufactured, a virtual prototype should be prepared. The accurate numerical model will provide essential knowledge about the performance of the axial magnetic bearing.

    In this paper a new version of discretisation model for Ultrasonic Transmission Tomography is presented. The algorithm has been extensively tested for synthetic noisy data on various configurations of internal objects. In order to improve the imaging quality, the pixels/voxels have been enlarged compared to the figures inscribed in pixels/voxels however no more than figures described on the standard square pixels or cubic voxels. The proposed algorithm provides better quality of imaging.
    W tym artykule zaproponowano nową wersję dyskretyzacji modelu dla Ultradźwiękowej Tomografii Transmisyjnej. Przedstawiony algorytm był wszechstronnie przetestowany dla danych syntetycznych zaszumionych dla różnych konfiguracji obiektów wewnętrznych. W celu poprawienia jakości obrazowania, piksele/woksele zostały powiększone w stosunku do figur wpisanych w piksele/woksele, jednak nie więcej niż figury opisane na standardowych kwadratowych pikselach lub sześciennych wokselach. Proponowany algorytm zapewnia lepszą jakość obrazowania.

    The objective of this study was to determine the effect of various design solutions for intensive mixing and shearing elements located at the end of a single-screw plasticizing system on the effectiveness of wood polypropylene composite extrusion. Four types of such elements were used in the study: a pineapple mixer, a Maddock mixer, a ring mixer, and a helical mixer. For the purpose of the study, 4 blends were prepared containing 5, 10, 15 and 20% of wood fibre, respectively. Direct and indirect resulting factors as well as variable, constant and disturbing factors were investigated. The effectiveness of extrusion of wood polypropylene composites was determined based on results of parameters characterizing this process, such as extrudate temperature, unit consumption of energy supplied to the extruder, mass flow rate, and extrusion speed. It has been shown that the effectiveness of the extrusion process can be improved by using different mixing and shearing elements. Such screw design solutions make it possible to affect rheological phenomena occurring during melt flow in the plasticizing system, without modifying the extrusion process parameters such as screw rotation speed and polymer temperature. The literature review shows that there exist very few and general studies investigating the effect of screw design geometry, especially that of mixing and shearing elements, on the efficiency of extruding and mixing wood polypropylene materials.

    The Kraków Branch of the Polish Geological Society (PGS) was established in 1922 and is the oldest and largest regional branch of the PGS. Initially, it was managed directly by the PGS Main Board, and from 1963, it has its own board. From the beginning, it has been one of the most active centres of the PGS and supported the work of the PGS management board in organizational activities in the country and in foreign cooperation. During World War II, its members gave secret lectures, and in the post-war period, they took part in reactivating the PGS activities and establishing both other branches and most of the specialist sections of PGS. The branch organized about 30% of all annual PGS Scientific Meetings and several dozen other scientific symposia and popular scientific sessions. It was the centre to initiate the organization of Polish Geological Congresses in the 21st century. The Kraków Branch includes representatives of all scientific institutes from Kraków and beyond, dealing with Earth sciences.

    The paper describes a system for monitoring and diagnosing a gantry. The main goal of the system is to acquire, visualize and monitor vibration levels of the gantry crucial elements. The system is also equipped with a computing and analytical part which enables predictive maintenance related to the vibration level assessment. The system architecture can be used in other applications too, i.e. those which require a wireless network of vibration sensors to carry out diagnostic tasks.
    W artykule przedstawiono system monitorowania i diagnostyki suwnicy bramowej. Głównym zadaniem systemu jest akwizycja, wizualizacja i monitorowanie poziomu drgań newralgicznych elementów suwnicy. System wyposażony jest również w część obliczeniowoanalityczną, umożliwiającą realizację zadań predykcyjnego utrzymania ruchu (ang. predictive maintenance) związanych z oceną poziomu drgań. Architektura systemu umożliwia wykorzystanie go również do innych zastosowań, w których dla realizacji zadania diagnostyki wymagana jest bezprzewodowa sieć czujników drgań.

    This paper concerns a substitute model of the metal-elastomer vibroinsulator that can find use in the mathematical description of vibration machine suspensions. In the case of a plane system, the flexibility matrix of the vibroinsulator was derived and two typical configurations of machine suspensions: symmetrical and asymmetrical, were analysed. For the case of a spatial motion, the elastic matrix of the vibroinsulator and the method of determining its elements was specified. Due to the non-linear character of the vibroinsulator's work, which is caused by large deformations of elastomeric elements under static loads, the analysis was limited to the surroundings of the work point and linear model. The results of theoretical analyses were confirmed by experimental tests.

Łukasz Sikora pomagają polskim służbom zdrowia i społeczeństwu walczyć z pandemią koronawirusa (COVID-19). Wskazano, że żołnierze Wojsk Obrony Terytorialnej jako pierwsi zgłosili się do pomocy. Omówiono przygotowanie mentalne oraz techniczne i szkolenia, którym poddawani są żołnierze WOT, m.in. 4-dniowy kurs teoretyczny i praktyczny, po którym można uzyskać certyfikat NAEMT (ang. National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians). Certyfikat ten jest rozpoznawany i uznawany we wszystkich krajach NATO.

    Opis:
    The influence of gelatinization and freeze-drying process on the physico-chemical and rheological properties of cereal starches was evaluated, and it was observed that modified starches revealed an increased water binding capacity and solubility when compared to dry starches, while exhibiting the same amylose and fat contents. The molecular weights of starches decreased after modification which resulted in the lower viscosity of dissolved modified samples in comparison to native starch pastes. As it was observed by scanning electron microscopy modified starches were characterized by an expanded surface, a uniform structure and high porosity.

    Opis:
    The paper presents the history and latest achievements in landslide research at the Polish Geological Institute (PGI). Since the establishment of PGI in 1919, landslides have been investigated during geological mapping in the Carpathians and considered by engineering geologists. After the 2nd World War, the importance of landslide research becomes more and more important following each landslide catastrophic event. Since 2008, the research on landslide and mass movements has been carried out systematically at the PGI within the SOPO (Landslide Counteracting System) project framework. Since that time, the SOPO project has been developing from landslide mapping and recording into a large spatial database, a sophisticated monitoring system (including on-line data acquisition) and susceptibility analysis, and early warnings with prediction capabilities. SOPO plays an important role to local and national administration. Together with the legal component, it allows defining a strategy for landslide risk reduction in Poland. Recently, landslide research plays so important role at the PGI that a special department, called Geohazard Center, has been established within the PGI organizational structure.
